Pat Forde: Beilein refusing Spike transfer release to B1G school is "height of hypocrisy"
Pretty much the bad PR you might expect, and I agree. Coaches shouldn't have veto power over transfer destination.

Money quotes from Beilein:
"There are 334 other schools he can go to,” Beilein told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday, almost getting the math right on 351 minus the other 13 Big Ten members. “He has a lot of choices."
And...
"Having a kid sit out a year is not like going to jail,” he said. “It’s a slippery slope. I want what’s best for Spike but also what’s best for our program. You train a guy and develop him for four years and suddenly he’s the starting point guard at Michigan State?"
As for Spike's dad Chuck, he seems to be taking it better than I would:
"To be honest, this is kind of what we expected,” he said. “It’s not totally a surprise. I don’t think it’s real fair, but it seems like the norm.
"There’s certain schools in the Big Ten he’d never consider and others he might, I don’t know. If they’re worried about Spike – I think they’ve got bigger problems. But we do respect Michigan and the program, so Spike doesn’t want to cause problems.”
Forde closes with this, which I totally agree with:
Yet here in the real world, a player who will have a degree – and who has already been told he’s not going to have a scholarship in 2016-17 – is still having his future controlled and curtailed by the college. It’s wrong. And at Michigan, where the 2015 starting quarterback was a Hawkeye in 2014, it’s also hypocritical.

My guess is that it is a limitation of the app, not the site - as most know, you can't vote on the app either, and if I am on it, I can't mod, so some of the modules probably don't work on the other platform or can't be read by the other platform. As much as people complain about the site itself - and there are many legitimate gripes - it is much more robust than the interface on either Android or Apple, if you need anything more than basic posting ability.
if we could execute a punt. You can never be sure you won't see a team from the other B1G division in Indianapolis unless the other team happens to be Illinois or Rutgers.
Oh come on.
No one thought Michigan would have a shot late in the season to win the division prior to the season being played. The consensus takes were 7-5 or 8-4.
"Execute a punt"
Sure would've been easier to do that if the worthless sacks of piss and wind in the striped shirts threw a flag on Sypniewski getting illegally hit. They sure had no problem screwing us over with flags all season long with "targeting".
Also, Michigan wouldn't have went to the B1G Championship game if that awful thing didn't happen. OSU would've via the tiebreaker. That's why their dumb fans buying shirts about a game they weren't involved in is hilarious because it actually is the reason they weren't playing for the B1G title.

Those transfers were not grad transfers, a relatively recent development in college football and basketball. I can see restricting a guy that has not graduated and has 2+ years of eligibility remaining. Once the player graduates, control over said player should cease.

So if a guy has 2 years of eligibility, it's totally cool to restrict him? And if he has 1 year of eligibility, it's wrong? I just don't see how this is a big deal.

If the player has graduated, he has fulfilled the primary objective of a student athlete according to the NCAA. He should be free to transfer wherever he wants. Conference school, rival school, wherever. The school should no longer have any control over him.
If the player has not graduated, that same objective has not been met so I think it's fair for the player to be restricted when transferring.

You have 5 years to play 4 years - still under the NCAA rules and regulations.
So what about the 5th year seniors that weren't/aren't going to get their scholarships renewed? Some thing seems imbalanced if a school can bought place restrictions/controls on a player for 5 years, but isn't obligated to maintain their scholarships for 5 years as well.

to be a rule in the Big Ten that players couldn't transfer to other Big Ten teams?
March 31st, 2016 at 11:23 AM ^
You couldn't get a scholarship this way. It was allowed, but you'd have to pay your way (this is what happened with Boren)
March 30th, 2016 at 10:44 PM ^
it's often the case that coach restricts transfers to all teams on the schedule while the trasferer is there, including non-conference foes. Do we know if Ferentz restricted Rudock from going to the teams on Iowa schedule?
I don't really see what the deal is. Forde can suck it then. I agree with Coach B 100%.

I completely agree with Forde. And the competitive aspect of it (as far as "giving up your gameplan") is incredibly overrated. Everyone knows everyone's gameplan, because they see it on tape year after year after year. It's not like Tom Crean didn't already know Beilein's offense. Bielfeldt was not able to disclose any super secret tactical information to him that he couldn't easily see on tape.
"Coach Crean, they don't play defense! We can totally go on a 47-0 run on them!"
March 30th, 2016 at 10:01 PM ^
Max probably said the same thing about our football team against Indiana!
March 30th, 2016 at 10:14 PM ^
Agree on the "no tactical advantage" point, particularly for basketball. Aside from a few inbounds plays, a basketball game doesn't have a meticulous game plan like a football game would have.
March 30th, 2016 at 11:23 PM ^
it's not like the coaches roll the ball out and let them play.
The gameplans tend to be "trap on the pick and roll against this player" or "look for the backdoor cut more". Beilein isn't inventing new tactics everyday or anything.

Make room? So cutting some other guy for no good reason would be better?
Beilein is wrong on this. The kid completed his obligation to Michigan. Michigan isn't letting him come back. Why should have not be able to go anywhere he wants?
Beilein and Michigan are completely wrong. Forde is right.

The fact that we don't have a scholarship for him and are actively recruiting other transfers?

Because he, like Max, is leaving when they don't want to.

"I did tell the coaches that I did want to come back to Michigan," Bielfeldt said. "But at the end of the day things didn't work out and we both decided to move on."
Bielfedlt added, "I told (coaches) that I wanted to stay (and) Michigan was my first choice but as time went on I had to explore other options."
“We were both just kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place,” Albrecht told the Michigan Daily. “Because I didn’t want to leave Michigan, obviously, but at the same time I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to play a fifth year and get my master’s paid for. So it was a difficult conversation, but I think he understood, and it was kind of tough for both of us, but he just wished me the best.”

all I said was they didn't want to leave the program and those quotes verify it. not sure what else you need to see.

There's a step (or six) between "didn't want to leave the program" and "forced out." I didn't want to leave my last job and they didn't force me out, but I left because that was best for me.
