Exit Jaron Dukes, Reon Dawson, Maybe Freddy Canteen Comment Count

Dukes caught the only TD of last year's spring game against Dennis Norfleet

Per Harbaugh:

The departures of Dukes and Dawson bring Michigan to or under 85 depending on the status of the as-yet-unsigned Dytarious Johnson; if Canteen does not make it back they'd be at 84 and able to issue a scholarship to Ryan Glasgow.

When I hear Reon Dawson, I think of his infamous "I'll always be a Buckeye" comment, (or something close to that), after committing to Hoke. Also, he was plan B or C after Gareon Conley decommitted. Pardon if I don't miss him.

This looks and smells terrible. I don't want Michigan to be Alabama. I don't want to win by cutting kids who don't pan out. I am beginning to regret getting Harbaugh.

It would be one thing if these medical scholarships were announced right after the season, opening scholarships to recruit for. It is another thing all together to announce this after oversigning by three and conveniently announce these openings. If you criticized Saban for doing the exact same thing, then you should not be excusing Harbaugh now. But I guess hypocrisy runs high around here.

Did it ever occur to you that they recruit knowing there will be attrition of some kind every year? Players get hurt, players get buried on the depth chart and want playing time elsewhere, etc. If you recruited for exactly the number of open scholarships after a season you're screwing yourself.

I wonder if the group announcements have anything to do with how they do player interviews. As spring practice comes to a close and the depth chart takes shape, guys with lingering injuries may not want to make the commitment a d1 football team requires year round just to be a practice squad guy

JH is not Hoke in almost all ways and he demands the guys commit fully to winning. pipkins wanted to play despite the risk - his choice; otherwise, you so not hear guys badmouthing JH and most of them state he is just brutally candid. Other than pushing guys to perform even if hurt or make other choices, what else is worth complaining about re JH?

This is exactly the kind of shady dealings that this board was vehemently against before. If you want to be a bunch of hypocrites, be my guest. I have enough integrity to call spade a spade. Winning is not everything and I do not care if anyone disagrees.

I disagree with your premise. You have not proof other than circumstantial evidence.

People so far (yes me too) have gotten all pissed of before and gone off half cocked, only to find out that things weren't a big deal like with that kid from Illinois.

Harbaughs earned the benefit of the doubt for me.

and Saban is the criteria. Saban only cares if a guy can help the team I win games; JH only cares if the guy works hard to make himself & the team better. Guys at UM appear to control if they stay; JH will pressure even contributors to "work" or risk the consequences. At the end of the day, only a few people know the situation and they're only giving public statements. If we ever know the injuries, it will shed light on the background.

I get the general sentiment, but this is a wild overreaction to a couple of kids with injuries being given the option to take a medical scholarship. And again, this isn't even that late in the year; usually you see these types of moves later in the off-season.

@gameboy :regret Harbaugh? Are you kidding?! Yes, it's sad to cut kids from the roster and have a recruiting system structured with over signing but it's the status quo now. If we want to compete with other big schools on the field , we need to have as many talent options on hand as possible. Totally agree @Hoek! We are in good hands. Getting NC ready. Go Blue!

Sorry no, over signing and screwing kids over and forcing them out is not okay when they are:
A. Promised an education
And
B. Doing everything right.

I am not saying I think there are shenanigans and the coaching staff came out(mostly) on the side of the Angels with the Swenson/Weaver business so benefit of the doubt and all that, but.......
Given these happened in the middle of spring practice vs. the end of it, I can almost buy the medical retirement thing, but the personnel make it look pretty suspicious. St. Saban memorial isn't okay at Bama and it's not okay here.

I fully expect there to be fewer kids on scholarship than 85 by the time the season starts, to the point that multiple walk ons not named Glasgow and Allen are getting scholarships as well. There are still multiple position battles that might shake a kid or two more away.

I think this board just gets bored and wants to find something to talk about, so basketball and football scholarship counts bubble to the top.  But I expect there to be a surplus of scholarships available this year, considering you still have people on this campus who don't have an easy path to playing time and, I'm going to assume, believe they can find that somewhere else.

That being said, lying about medical conditions is not ok in my book, but I don't think Harbaugh is pulling a Shady Saban. I think he's maintaining a competitive atmosphere, yes. M has integrity and I don't think that'll change but having scholarship options open if the kids have hardly seen the field /lack improvement or have medical issues is understandable .

How long have you been following football?

I've been at it for a few decades. In that time, many kids at Michigan (even our current AD) have had injuries that ended their careers. So maybe, just maybe, these kids are really hurt and can't play. Maybe they think they can play but the coaches and doctors are sincerely looking out for their best interest?

You clearly have a formed opinion based on...your opinion. Do you know these kids? Are you their doctor? Have they said anything to contradict Harbaugh? It seems that you're the only one quacking around here. If you have real information then spill it, because you're right that the fanbase would really want to know if kids are truly being pushed off the team.

Am I the only one who noticed the part where it said Moe Ways had a broken foot? Or is this old news?

Why is it sooo hard to believe that people playing power 5 D1 football at the highest level could be hurt and no longer have a career at one of the most violent sports in the game? Anyone??

Football is a HUGE commitment at this level and sometimes guys get hurt. They probably look at the situation and say...can I REALLY make a living at this?? Get my body pounded every day and totally commit myself to every play. Every down.
Jack Miller would've started..he wasn't injured ... And walked away healthy. He was done.
Is it that hard to believe if someone's heart isn't totally in the game that this could happen? Probably not.

Furthermore...if you want to compete...and you really take a look at all the truly competitive programs out there..they are all making their rosters as competitive as possible. It's life in the power 5. Coaches' jobs depend on it. Schools like Michigan that are behind and gunning to get back on top have to be ruthless.
If you don't like it...go watch GVSU vs. SVSU. Hell, I'd even be willing to bet it hours in there to a "certain" degree.

Yeah, you could probably make a case for anyone 2-3 years into any college program that they have something that could justify them for a medical and if it is not worth it to them anymore, it is their right to walk away. They have to live with decades of pain, not us.

It isn't.

It's kind of hard to believe that people sitting on the bench in power 5 D1 football at the highest level could be hurt at a much higher rate than those actually playing.

... One it these players. And sad to say, cuz I love what Harbaugh has and will bring, but he's telling these guys they have to go. Get used to this guys because this is the new way around here.

They are going into their senior year at Michigan, would likely transfer to a less prestigious academic school, and they would have to sit out a year.

If given a choice of staying at Michigan and not playing or attempting to find playing time elsewhere, they very likely made a wise decision.
