Bellaire if you get thirsty.
I was going to suggest Bellaire. Hang out on Torch Lake sandbar all day and then head to Short's at night. No better Michigan summer day than that.

Petoskey (where I currently live). Hard to beat little traverse bay, M119, and the Leggs Inn

The best part about Pentwater is, no matter where you are in town, you can walk to the bars.

I don't go to the Village Pub just because of that. Pentwater has always been a Sparty town, but you can tell it's gotten worse over the last several years. When it 100+ degrees here in Arkansas, I can walk downtown Pentwater at night in shorts and a hoodie
I live in Little Rock, AR, but take my family to Pentwater every summer. Ludington is 10 minutes north, while Silver Lake is 10 minutes south.

I like Leland & the Suttons Bay area. Right in the heart of M-22, a few nice restaurants, wineries, good shopping all around. My ex-GF's Dad had a place right on lake Michigan. Must be like a 1.5M home now... too bad all she wanted to do was drink and smoke weed. Fun in college, but didn't want Carmela Soprano as my wife.
and hit up Camp Michigania near Boyne City. It's some sort of superfan experience, but I recommend Googling it, as that's basically all I remember.
To go the Michigania, you have to be a member of the Alumni Association, and the week-long stays are something like $6,000 for a family.

on the east bay and Elk Lake; nice town with some great bars and restaurants. Excellent cajum restaurant about a half mile out of town
It's been some years since I've been there, but eating on the little wharf they have was a pretty cool experience.

For me, it isn't so much the city, but more finding a good place to just relax and stay put. I've spent time in a house on the lake in New Buffalo several years, and in Sawyer, and camped in the State Park in Holland, and at Big Bear, and some place I don't even remember the name of. My favorite, though, was an old beach summer house in Grand Haven we stayed a couple of summers when the kids were really small. We didn't have to pack up and go anywhere. Just being able to roll out of bed and wiggle your feet in the sand with a hot cup of coffee was awesome. We were on the beach on north shore drive, and could have bonfires and s'mores when we wanted, and grill when we wanted, and watch the sunsets, and just chill. There was a big old table where plenty of friends and relatives could fit, and a sandy back porch, and it was rustic enough the kids couldn't smudge or destroy much, and it was simply glorious.
Sounds ideal.
Pentwater, for many of the reasons already said. Fantastic beaches with a great small-town downtown to walk through right next to them. The wife and I love going there when we're on the west side of the state, and the Brown Bear Bar and Antler bar are both great (love getting the bison burger!), as well as the ice cream/candy shop and the old-fashioned toy store. I like Ludington as well, but Pentwater is hard to beat without travelling all the way up to Traverse City or Mackinac Island.
Born and raised there so I am biased. Moved to the South 25 years ago but still go back every summer.
20 minutes north of Muskegon
Hometown is Montague
Was in hurry to get out after HS
Now in hurry to get back
Plus, local brewery - Fetch - is amazing

Just booked 2 cottages a few hundred yards south of Grand Haven's public beach for July. I've never had a private sand beach before. I can't wait, I have two sons 3 and 5 and they'll love every minute of it.
is awesome. Love it there.
Actually on Glen Lake, less than one mile from Lake Michigan. But that area is pure Heaven.
Saugatuck is where my wife and I got married on a 55-foot yacht with family and friends right on Lake, MI We go back every year for our Anniversary and stay the Ship & Shore. Great little town. Holland is nice also. I really like South Haven. Best breakfasts around at the Phoenix Street Cafe.
Sutton's Bay is gorgeous as well with the best vinyard called Black Star Farms
Ludington is pretty cool. Great pizza in St. Josephs
BlockM to add to this there is a resort in Glen Arbor called the homestead. One of the nice northern Michigan resorts, I highly suggest you look into it.
