Updated 2017 National Championship Odds

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

Bovada currently has Michigan tied with Clemson at 15-2 odds to win the National Championship next season.  Now I'm not much of a gambler, but I'm pretty sure that means we're almost guaranteed to win it.

Ohio State: 6-1
Alabama: 7-1
Clemson: 15-2
Michigan: 15-2
LSU: 14-1

MSU is at 25-1.

I always get confused when they use the year (2017) of the Playoff game or the Bowl game, rather than the year of the season (2016).

What they really mean here is the 2016 National Champion.  The fact that the Playoff game is played just one week into the new year is immaterial.  It's still the 2016 season.

If you ask me who the 1997 National Champion was, I am always going to say Michigan even though the Rose Bowl was technically played in 1998.

at taking people's money, lol. Michigan will be very good. The only team that raised my eyebrow was Tennessee. Love Butch Jones, but did not feel they would be as strong as that line. Intereesting.

Please everyone, stop confusing "Best odds" as most likely. Those two are only ever coincidentally the same team. Odds are set to intice bets on one side of the ledger or other. This far out its kinda silly to look at but if you really wanted to: you'd have to look at which teams have gotten large sums dropped on them at this point. Those would probably be more accurately described as "favorites."

I think you mean 2016 national championship.  Although the game will be played in 2017, it's considered the '16 title.  Just like how we were the 1997 national champions despite the Rose Bowl being played in '98.

There was an article posted on bleacher report today about why osu was moved from. 12-1 to 6-1. It's not that Vegas believes that osu has the best chance to win, but rather a way for Vegas to protect themselves if osu does win. A ton of people took osu as a value bet at 12-1.

I agree with the general idea that Vegas lines are set by the sharps.  But for a futures market like this one?  Are sharps really betting into this market at all?  It seems like a sucker bet (just add up the odds for each team), and win or lose you are letting the casino hold your money for 11 months.

There are plenty of things a sharp would rather be doing with his money between now and January 2017 than letting a sportsbook invest it for free.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about sports betting. I just posted what I read earlier, because it seemed like it made sense and it was definitely relavent.

Say all things remain constant for the next seven months (no arrests or major injuries), will we see the line adjust back and forth until it essentially correct? I ask that because based on what you said and osu's rebuild/reload it seems like the line over reacted.

OSU has a schedule tailor-made to reach the playoff.  Losing to OK wouldn't hurt their chances.  Their whole season comes down to MSU/UM the last two weeks, where their young players will be at their best.  They're gonna be on fire against Sparty after last year, and they get us at home.

I also love our chances.  We have 8 home games, most of them very winnable.  Our season pretty much comes down to 3 tough road games. Harbaugh proved last year he can win close road games, and our roster is deep and experienced. Just beat the Bucks!
