Beilein and hotseat...is it fair?
I realize this seems to be a trend with John Beilein teams...it's either feast or famine in terms of offense because of the lack of a big man most of the time. I don't remember the defense being this bad overall ever though.
Something has to give though. I don't know if it is fair to say he's on the hotseat just yet, but defense has to improve next year and recruiting has to improve.
Izzo had quite the stretch during the 2000s where they were pretty mediocre. I don't think Beilein should be on the hotseat, but improvements must be made.

I'm stating the obvious, but recruiting has consequences. We're seeing that out there with this year's squad.

Look at the roster for next year. What makes you think the team will be significantly improved? 2017-2018 will likely be even worse with Irvin and Walton gone.

I hate the lack of accountability, excuse making, rationalizing, and acceptance of mediocrity.

He should go. Fin.
Now what does that have to do with our basketball program again?
Beilein has has ample time to put together a solid roster. Shit happens, sure, we lost McGary early and have had some injury issues. So has MSU, and they seem to manage just fine. I'm not quite calling for him to be fired just yet, but Manuel needs to take a hard look at our basketball program. Something has to change, and soon. MSU is recruiting on a level we can't compete with the past two years. What do you think is in store for us in the next five years on the hardwood?

Ok well if you don't care what is happening or what will happen, maybe you're not fit to be judging the situation.

It's not irrational to expect your mens basketball team to be better than middle of the road. It's not irrational to expect your mens basketball team to simply to more than just show up against your biggest rival. It's not irrational to expect your mens basketball team to win. It's not irrational to point out major flaws in your mens basketball coach.
February 6th, 2016 at 4:01 PM ^
Pretty much this. Lose by 30 at home to our biggest bball rival.
February 6th, 2016 at 4:36 PM ^
If I half assed my job do you think I'd still be employed? If I just showed up part time to classes do you think I'd still be in school? If I just went through the paces in my relationship with my fiancee do you think she'd still want to marry me? So no it's not irrational to think that because the Men's Basketball coach at Michigan should do more than just make a final four and an elite eight run. 2 out of 9 seasons were very sucessful. Sorry but that's not good enough for me. It's basketball, freshmen can make instant impacts unlike football where only a handful of guys can provide the same impact.
He sucks at recruiting. All of his classes minus like two are average. His teams are awful on defense. This team doesn't even look like they want to play. It's time to make an elite offer to an elite coach. His teams should be progressing not regressing.

which seems very plausible and maybe even likely...then after next year you need to at least start the search for a new coach.

I like Beilein, but his teams are consistently soft. We have never really played with the urgency and fire that you see in the big time programs.
The toughness and grit are just not there.
February 6th, 2016 at 6:38 PM ^
Now you are just spouting ignorant crap. Never means never. It isn't that he has NEVER been successful here, as can be attested by his great NCAA runs, but his work now. You are either a fool or intentional ignoring past data to support your impatience.

National championship game with a foul call on Trey Burke's phenomally clean block at a couple other calls going the other way and Michigan has another National Championship. He did resurrect the program and will win with integrity again. Plus one for your voice of reason.

His success through 2014 definitely buys him some cushion against hot seat talk. That said, I am worried about the future. Ultimately, talent is what gets you to final fours and wins big ten championships. That's true even for Beilein, and I'm not talking about recruiting rankings, I'm talking about NBA talent. The '13 and '14 teams had loads of talent. This team does not. You can chalk it up to Levert's injury, but we got a bit lucky that he even came back this year.
I'll give Beilein the benefit of the doubt that he seems to have had some bad luck in how the trio of Walton, Irvin, and Chatman turned out. On top of that, there haven't been any hidden gems, as of now. Bad luck may it be, Wagner and the '15 class better pan out because if they don't then he will be on the hot seat.
February 6th, 2016 at 4:03 PM ^
I don't think he should be fired yet, but if shit doesn't change real soon I'll be on board. He needs to recruit real big men. He got McGary, then what? It's a major, fatal flaw.
February 6th, 2016 at 4:23 PM ^
Totally agree. John Beilein is a good guy. College needs this type of guy, and a high profile job like he has is good for Michigan and good for the game.

But we're lucky he even returned for a senior year, so...
February 6th, 2016 at 4:48 PM ^
Caris is not a first round draft pick he will be lucky to be drafted at all. He gets injured way too much to be even considered to be drafted. 6'6" skinny wing that has spent the better part of the last 2 years dealing with injury after injury. He has spent more time on a trainers table then he has on a basketball court. Neg me all you want but I am speaking the true.

much Michigan basletball. You just come on here to bash the coach?
February 6th, 2016 at 3:40 PM ^
...who was "considerable unexpected attrition"? Looking back, Staukus was the only one I can think of who left before we expected it. You could argue McGary as well, but it wasn't all that surprising considering his talent and recrutiing rankings. Are you referring to Horford?
