second string when you are in a redshirt year.

I will grant you that point, but past play doesn't guarantee the inability to generate any future production/improvement? That is my point. Players can improve years into their development.

I'd love to hear how "not a chance" is the truth.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:38 PM ^
We could say the same thing about Brian Cleary and you guys wouldn't get all defensive. What is it about Shane that invokes this delusion among some Michigan fans that he's some great talent? There's absolutely no basis for it.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:42 PM ^
because someone put five stars next to his name when he was in high school. Seeing him actually play is not a factor here
December 30th, 2015 at 4:05 PM ^
Yep. A lot of people had high expectations, and he hasn't met them, which they take as a personal insult.

Brian Cleary doesn't have an NFL caliber arm...Shane does, giving him a higher ceiling...Not sure why you think your analogy is cogent... Shane's arm doesn't guarantee success, but it does guarantee that if other parts of his game catch up, he has the potential to be a damn good QB. Something that Brian Cleary, nor many many others for that matter, don't have

Still hope he reaches his potential and wins the job.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:31 PM ^
What potential? Why are people still assuming he has a high ceiling just because a journalist overrated him as a recuit back in 2012? It's pretty clear at this point that he's not a big ten starter.

Unless "some journalist" was named Nick Saban or Tommy Tuberville then there was more to the kid's game than Rivals evaluations.
Kid had national offers from Alabama, Sparty, Tennessee, Syracuse and Cinci (and likely would have had more had he not closed his recruiting so early and committed to M)
Who knows what his ceiling is at this point or if it is "clear" he's not a B1G starter...none of us have access to practice except the usual rumors etc.
Throwing the kid under the bus like you are is not cool and, frankly, not really valid (just your opinion like my comments)

Hopefully LB

If he wants to stay, more power to him.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:29 PM ^
December 30th, 2015 at 3:33 PM ^
Exactly. There's no sense in having him take up a scholarship that could be used on a more deserving player. He can either stay at Michigan and pay his own way or take out loans like most of us did, or he can transfer if football is more important to him than getting a degree from Michigan. But its pretty clear at this point he's not part of Harbaugh's vision for this program's future.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:37 PM ^
Or, he can stay at Michigan on scholarship and get his degree. Why would he choose to give up the scholarship if he intended to stay at Michigan? That wouldn't make any sense at all.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:38 PM ^
It may not be his choice.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
Are you aware of any other case in which Harbaugh has taken a scholarship away from a player just because he wasn't starting? If next year was going to his fifth, I'd agree with you that it might not be his choice - Harbaugh has said the fifth year has to be a mutual decision. To my knowledge, he's never said anything about taking away scholarships for third or forth year players.
December 30th, 2015 at 6:11 PM ^
He committed to being a student and player at Michigan. Starter or bench player, we should allow every kid who commits to the program an opportunity to earn their degree. I would be very disappointed if we became a program that pulled scholarships before that happened or forced kids out because they did not develop into starters.
Maybe that would harm our ability to compete with Alabama, but I don't give a damn.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:37 PM ^
Knock off the "more deserving player" type comments.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:40 PM ^
How about no? It costs a legitimate player with starting potential the chance to play for Michigan if a scholarship is being used up by a guy who won't ever play.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
That's a terrible thought process. It is the University of Michigan football team, not an NFL team.
December 30th, 2015 at 4:07 PM ^
that would be a perfect fit as Alabama fans.
December 30th, 2015 at 5:03 PM ^
December 30th, 2015 at 3:46 PM ^
Is this really your direction for Michigan?
December 30th, 2015 at 4:51 PM ^
This is MICHIGAN, not the fucking NFL, or the SEC. We don't screw over our student athletes by taking away scholarships for something OUTSIDE of their control. Let those ESS EEE SEE deuschbags handle that.
Thank God a dick like you doesn't have a say in the matter. Do us all a favor and saunter over to 11w or RCMB.
P.S. You're unapologetic vitriol towards a 21-year old kid is quite intriguing....did Shane wrong you in some way?

December 30th, 2015 at 9:40 PM ^
Man, you are an insufferable dick!! You know the team has 85 scholarship players right? And that only a fraction of that number ever see the fiels consistently right?
How about those guys? Why aren't you bitching about them?
December 30th, 2015 at 3:39 PM ^
How is that clear? And what qualifies you to determine whether he's a B1G caliber quarterback?
If you're one of the coaches or something, then cool, thanks for the posts.
December 30th, 2015 at 3:41 PM ^
somebody , atleast 1 person on the coaching staff thinks that he is infact worthy of a scholarship. I'm sure someday, the coaching staff will look back and think....."damn it, why didn't we have Dawkins from MgoBlog evaluating the talent pool here" But not today........Shane stays!

Everything in your billion posts is speculative. You don't know where Morris stood on the depth chart. The fact is Harbaugh came out and said he was redshirting this year.
As for your immature suggestion that he bail on UM, you ought to know he and his family have been true blue their whole lives. To date, the football program has not lived up to its end of the bargain. Three OC's, no offensive line, no running game, and a concussion is what his loyalty has been rewarded with.
Who knows if Shane will ever play meaningful snaps at UM. He wouldn't be the first highly rated prospect to not pan out. But, for sure, he doesn't deserve the rantings of an immature idiot on a message board.
I suggest you take your fandom down to SEC country where it belongs. What a disgrace.
