- ANOTHER EDIT: Here is an analysis of BC's defense this year by Ian Boyd of Football Study Hall: http://www.footballstudyhall.com/2015/12/15/10115630/how-boston-college-eagles-built-a-top-5-defense
Sam Webb confirms:
Multiple sources saying Boston College def. coordinator Don Brown to #Michigan is true. Word from a BC player is Brown informed team already

Players at Boston College also got calls from their head coach (Steve Addazio & their respective position coach) telling them about the move

Looks like his defense have improved every year he's been at a school. Seems like a great hire, and having a guy who won't leave for a HC job after 1 year is nice.

Eager to see more blitzing.

If you are going hold BC's two previous years against Brown then it's perfectly fair to hold Snow's performance at EMU against him.

They got significantly better every year under Brown though, which is a good sign. And it's freaking BC we're talking about. They don't get great or even good athletes.
December 20th, 2015 at 5:36 PM ^
So did rich rod's offenses. And actually he regressed BCs defense in year 1 from the prior DC.
So I never love that argument - when your bar is that low to begin with. Rich Rod "improved" UM's record every year too etc. Because it started so low in year 1 - same as Brown with BCs awful D in his 1st year.
We'll see - 2016 D has a loaded DL and 2 All Americans as DBs so it will be good with any competent DC; we'll see what he does in 2017 with the young pups.
It's not a home run hire - if OSU had hired him people would be pooh poohing it. Doesnt mean it wont work out - just saying it doesnt feel like a 1st, 2nd type of choice for Harbaugh.
December 20th, 2015 at 5:40 PM ^
So he's the RR of defense? Is that supposed to be a bad thing? Maybe not with Harbaugh's philosophy of course, but in general, RR as an OC would be fine by me.

you'll see that it is a great hire. The man has succeeded both as a HC and a DC. He is a very coach period and not just as a coordinator.
I think the fact that he coached out east bias people against people. The East has a poor reputation for football(other than professional obviously) and I think people's opinions in part reflect this bias.

I'm all for being a little eeyore-ish now and then, so here goes: Can you provide good reasoning to disregard the fact that a mediocre, non-destination school like BC with a schedule that includes Notre Dame, Florida State, and Clemson and a terrible offense managed to produce the #1 defense in the nation this year, over this Michigan team and an Alabama team that is both loaded down with future pros and anchored by a powerful running offense on the other side?
I mean, yeah he's old, and yeah, BC was only in the 30s last year, but he has produced decent defenses without ever having top players to work with. I find that very encouraging. And, with his track record, I have a hard time believing Harbaugh would get duped by stats from afar without doing his homework here.
But I might (no sarcasm) be missing something, like a generational athlete or a flukey scheme or something. What should I be negative about?
December 20th, 2015 at 4:57 PM ^
Even being in the 30's at BC is pretty amazing
December 20th, 2015 at 5:39 PM ^
Its a very good defense in 2015. The 2013 and 2014 defenses were not good.
December 20th, 2015 at 6:11 PM ^
2014 was pretty good, especially for BC. Now, I'm not what I would call thrilled with the hire, but I'm okay with it. I was hoping to be amazed, but I do trust that Harbaugh knows what he's doing. Hopefully this guy was at least in his top handful of choices.

Is he a destroyer of spread offenses?

Best way to stop the spread is a dominant defensive line. We'll have one next year (it was good this year until Glasgow went down).
December 20th, 2015 at 4:47 PM ^
"Brown introduced a scheme popularized by legendary NFL coach Buddy Ryan in which the defensive line was shifted considerably to the side opposite the tight end and both outside linebackers lined up on the same side of the formation, two or three yards off the line of scrimmage. The objective was to rush as many as eight players on each snap. Brown called his version "The Bear."

@mgoblog I don't know enough about Michigan's roster, but if your DBs are good, then Don Brown will be a perfect fit and great hire.

New England isn't exactly a recruiting hotbed, but he should have all kinds of connections there when Michigan does want to grab a prospect out of that region.
