Nightly DC Rumblings

Submitted by Jack Daniels on

1. Randy Shannon met with the Reese family, and told them he wasn't leaving his job at Florida.

2. Chad Simmons of Scout thinks Pruitt would accept the Michigan job on the spot if offered Friday.

3. Lance Anderson is still in play, and may be offered the job soon (or already has).

In other words...

I've got Friday on my mind

If it is Fisch that leaves, who I assume you're talking about, that would leave Michigan with three coaches on the offensive side of the ball: Drevno as OC/OL coach, Wheatley with the RBs, and Jay with the TEs. I can't see them having no WR coach, as that is a fairly technical position with a lot of nuances.

But if they feel they can get by with just having guys like Soup Campbell, T.J. Weist, and Derrion Montgomery coach the receivers, then they could do what you laid out.

The NCAA has strict rules about how many coaches you are allowed to have on staff. These rules wouldn't mean anything if you could just circumvent them by hiring administrators and having them coach the players. If Soup Campbell is going to coach the receivers, he is going to have to be employed as a coach in an official capacity.

Pretty shocked UF can keep 2 guys of that calibar as co-DCs. Lots of teams would love to have either and they have both for a 2nd year.  Hmm.

Per Spath from the wolverine. Anderson has till the weekends end to make a decision and Pruitt and JH may have already met. My take is JH is comfortable with Pruitt but Anderson is the #1 choice. So if Anderson isn't named DC by Monday its a strong possibility the Pruitt will be our guy

Because his defense sucks and he can't stop the spread. Harbaugh's only hiring him because he's familiar with him.

Pruitt is an infinitely better coach.

Trust me, I've watched every Stanford game the past few years. Derek Mason was the brains behind that defense. Anderson is a bend but don't break 3-4 coach who plays his safeties 17 yards off the ball and his corners about 10. It's infuriating to watch.

I've looked at Anderson's resume a bit. One thing that jumps out is, he actually only has a few seasons worth of DC experience--he's mostly been a position coach and was promoted after Mason left Stanford. If Mattison wasn't on the staff here that alone would make me nervous--but we do have Matttison so it's not as though Anderson would be totally riding solo.

In his favor, apart from the JH stamp of approval, Stanford did largely shut down Oregon in 2013 (Anderson's first year as DC)--so there is some evidence that he can deal with high-caliber spread options. But Stanford also held Oregon to 14 points in 2012 under Mason, so perhaps Mason was the real architect of Stanford's 2013 win as well.

I also looked at talent levels. From 2010 to 2015, Stanford signed 19 defensive players rated 4+ stars. By comparison, Michigan in that time period signed 27. I realize recruiting stars aren't a direct proxy for talent but that does suggest Anderson might not have the athletes to play as aggressive a scheme as what MaizeHaze wants to see. Remember Wayne Lyons was one of their starting corners last season and he can't even sniff defensive snaps at M.

I do think a lot of people seem to have an unrealistic expectation that the right DC is the difference between 2010 and throwing up goose eggs against the Ohio States of the world. I'm not sure it makes that big a difference. GERG failed because he had terrible position coaches and because he did stupid things like put Cam Gordon at FS. We can't afford an incompetent guy like that. But if the choice is between an okay DC with strong position coaches vs. a rock star DC with some uncertainty in the position coach ranks, I am not sure the latter is a better option.

Correction--Mason was still the Stanford DC in 2013. I guess that means Anderson has even less experience than I thought, and that he wasn't DC for either of those wins over Oregon. That certainly does knock him down a few pegs.

All of us are far less qualified to be deciding who would be a "good fit" than Jim Harbaugh, which is why we should all simply want whatever Harbaugh wants.

If he offered Anderson the position last year as is reported, then I want him. There's a reason he was one of JH's first calls upon getting the Michigan job. I don't know what those reasons are, but whatever they are, I like.

Pruitt is a fiery motivator, great strategist. His players play like crazed dogs wherever he has coached. If we get him I am sold national championship will happen within two years.

is he will likely be a 1 year and done guy under Harbaugh when he gets a HC job, just like Durkin. That means a year from now we will be worrying about losing recruits he recruited. We need a DC that is going to stay for at least a couple years.

From what I've read if love Pruitt. I love aggressive defenses. If what another poster said about Anderson is true (bend but do t break type...) I'd rather not see that.

I don't want out offense to have to carry so much of the load. I'd love to see Michigan with with throttling defenses. The donuts this year were beautiful.

If Pruitt does have baggage that may have cost him a HC position this year, then wouldn't it be wise for him to get away and redeem himself at a program such as Michigan.  It would make his resume look a lot stronger and give him more HC opportunities outside ones in the deep south.

I guess that's a positive take on the situation.

Well OSU has the Co-DC thing going on unless fickell gets demoted. USC is a pretty unstable situation right now, in my opinion. So it's us versus bama. Basically, it comes down to whether he wants to be in Saban's defensive shadow and go back to his homestate or captain the ship here.
