About the Fans

Submitted by MichiganMan2011 on

I'm probably going to be negbombed to Bolivia, but I have to get this off my chest.

I am a Michigan alum, and a rabid Wolverine for the past 8 years. I did not grow up rooting for the Wolverines, but I live & die by the Maize and Blue with the rest of them. Hell, my first game in the Big House was The Horror, and I'm still here so that has to count for something.

I was at The Game today. Honestly I can't blame the coaches and players too much. They are operating within the constraints forced upon them by situations outside of their control. They gave it their all, and for that they should always have a special place in the heart of Michigan's Faithful.

The biggest element I found lacking was the fanbase. From the start, the stadium was at least 25-35% Buckeyes. I know it's Thanksgiving weekend, but you won't see Ohio selling that many tickets to us when we're playing in Columus.

But even worse to me was the fact that the atmosphere just plain wasn't there. You could hear a pin drop on most Ohio downs. When they were running tempo, you could clearly tell that our fanbase was not prepared and had no idea about when to get loud. In full honesty, when they annouced the Slippery Rock score there was a bigger reaction than on Ohio third downs when our defense needed it the most. Not to mention the fact that the stairs were fully occupied with Michigan fans leaving from the beginning of the fourth quater onward at full tilt.

I don't mean to denegrate our fans, I honestly don't. But to put things in perspective, I went to the Alabama-LSU game this year and the difference is night and day.. If we ever want to be a "Great Team" we need to secure our home field advantage. It's one thing to have a great team, a great coaching staff, great traditions, a great campus. But if we can't turn the Big House into a place that strikes fear into opposing teams' hearts we will never truly be elite.

I hate people pointing out issues without proposing solutions, so I will propose a few. First, we need to stop selling tickets to opposing fans. How we do that in the age of Stubhub is a difficult task. The Mgoblog ticket list is a good start, but we need to do so at a larger scale. Maybe the Athletic Department could work on a fan-to-fan sales system where they could take a cut but still ensure tickets end up in the hands of Michigan fans.

I also agree with Woodson -- The Game needs to be moved to 3:30 or a night start to encourage fans to get rowdy. The atmosphere shouldn't be like an afternoon picnic. It needs to be fierce and intimidating.

Lastly we need to take measures to get people loud when they're in the stadium. Encourage the people next to you to yell! There are times for talking (TV timeouts, halftime) and there are times for yelling (every down on defense). If we can't make use of the largest crowd in America then we are throwing away a vital advantage for our boys in Maize and Blue.

I may be preaching to the choir, or I may be pissing people off. Regardless, this is a message that needs to get out and be discussed seriously. It blows my mind that we can have a better atmosphere for a Penn State night game last year than we did for our most hated rival in a meanginful situation and Harbaugh's first year. Let the Team work on the X's and O's, but let's make sure we bring the heat and get back up our defense with the best damn home field advantage in all of sports.

Honestly our fanbase should be ashamed at the support we provided the team today, and we need to get real about fixing things.

"High" standards? Wow. I guess when UM football loses I should say "oh well, they lose all the time, this isn't Columbus where they win more frequently" too? Good argument, I guess I'll just be ok with us winning "often" and support the team for decades quietly. Sorry for waking you from your nap grandpa

Fuck you, man. I drove up from North Carolina and yelled my ass off. I'm not going to be the dumbass who loses his voice because he was yelling in the 4th quarter of a blowout. This isn't the crowd you need to be discussing this with. Also, thanks to Stubhub I was able to buy tickets.

Exactly. I drove up from South Carolina with my sons. We were glad to spend the money and the time and had a great time in the Big House again. Our whole section stood, yelled, and cheered until shell shock finally took over. When OSU was in the red zone on our side, they had to waste time outside because of crowd noise. The problem wasn't the crowd but the defensive performance.

If you left early you failed yourself. You were zoomed in on camera and basically became a Michigan state fan. Yeah, you were a Michigan state fan, rethink your tickets if this is you. Others want a chance. Others that won't quit.

Me. I care. I stayed. I stay. I stayed when Michigan lost to Toledo on my birthday. I also stayed when they came back and beat Michigan state in the Braylon game. I care. I stay.

State fans either don't show up or leave when they are winning. Don't be mad at fans for leaving a little early while the team continues to get their teeth kicked in on the field.

I personally stay until the clock is at 0:00. That is a choice my wife and I make. But I will never admonish a fan for leaving a game like today.

I had to laugh at the guy I saw wearing a Michigan hat, Michigan shirt...and a bright red jacket. I get that not everyone has a yellow or blue jacket, but dude.

when the team doesn't show up. Let's face it, they're coming off a national title, we've not won anything of note in a while. As nice as it would be if *every* student, alum, staffer or Michigander in general was a rabid Michigan fanatic, that's not how it works in reality. People flock to success. It's easy to be a rabid OSU fan right now, someone for whom losing is rarer than for just about any other fanbase in America. It's harder to be a Michigan football fan.

And there's no need to kid ourselves, losing 42-13 at home to OSU is not what Harbaugh was hired for, we could have had that with Hoke too. Not saying that to say Harbaugh has been disappointing, just that his job isn't even close to done.

I guess what I'm saying is, that if you want the fans to be as high and boisterous as the other side, give them a reason to trust the team that it will back it up on the field. Go to Columbus and blow them out next year, win a championship and then see how the atmosphere in Ann Arbor is in 2017.

I would say the Ohio fans had about 20,000 seats out of the 111,800+ at the game today.  Less than 20%, that's just about what you can expect every time we play Ohio.  Last home game against Ohio had many more Ohio fans than this year in my opinion.

I am a season holder for 24 years, I've see all the big plays, and the painful plays.  I saw the "horror" live and I've seen Harbaugh, Brady, Griese, Woodson, Howard, Bbiakabutuka, Weatley,(on and on) play for their whole careers at home.

Michigan fans are smart students of the game of football, they understand the game very well. Ohio took the crowd out of the game with their run game.  Just as simple as that.

They were better than us, thats all.

We had a hell of a season, to even imagine that we could take last years 5-7 team to a 9 or 10 win team this year is everything I hoped for, last December, when Jim Harbaugh came home.

I am disapointed, sure, frustrated at Ohio's record against us, sure, but I can tell you because I have lived through it, this too shall pass.

Remember, this is Brady's team not Harbaugh's team playing Meyer's team.  Give it some time.

Relax, enjoy the post season bowl game.

A lot of emotion on this thread which isn't the worst thing.   I'm going to sleep on this and come back tomorrow with some rational thought.   I don't think things are that bad

I think the Michigan fan base as a whole took a huge dive after this one. I couldn't afford to go to the game since I'm from Columbus. But damn, I watched every play from an Ohio state party, getting berated cause I was wearing Harbaugh gear and for people to leave in the 4th quarter is appalling. Unreal.

but we made plenty of noise until we were down by 3 TDs with Jake Rudock long since sidelined. Even then, I find it inexcusable that so many Michigan 'fans' had bailed and left, some as early as midway through the 3rd. We're all in our 50's/early 60s in our extended group of 10 seats (except a couple of offspring); we stay loud and NEVER leave early!

You're an idiot if you don't think a proud fan base after a decade of embarrassing play isn't going to be upset after a 42-13 loss to your bitter rival in a top 10 matchup. Yea it sucks, yea it sucks that everyone has to feel this miserable. It's not the fans fault we had to witness that kind of ass whooping... AGAIN.

How bout our team, who was in a top ten matchup in the biggest game of the year didn't shut the bed. We can't control whether that happens, but we certainly shouldn't be blamed after this shit show. They were outplayed and out coached in every facet of the game

I hope you enjoy Bolivia. I stood the whole damn and cheered as much as I could. I don't the vocal chords to yell for 74 plays. Maybe if they made a stop when I'm cheering I'll have the vocal fortitude to last all game. This was probably the least amount of red I've seen in some time. I've been to every UM vs OSU game since 2007 and this was probably the least red. So shut the hell up and put the drink down.

Right on. that was easily the fewest amount of Buckeyes I've seen in 10 years there. And I am horse and if you want the house loud then don't give up 350 fucking yards rushing. Oh one more thing get off my lawn.I've been here since 1969. We couldn't stop shit today. Still loved the turnaround and cannot wait for next year.

In section 10 row 86 in the middle of all the Buckeyes. I bought the tickets off stub hub. The honest to god only way to keep them away is to win. There were a lot less buckeye fans in attendance compared to 2013.

Let's talk about alot of fans not in attendance absolutely losing faith in this team and Harbaugh in a span of a two quarters. That just shows you the fanbase is still a bit...fractured.

Most of the rebutals here are related to the team not winning and as soon as they give you something to cheer for you will. That is just the point. I live in CA, so could't go to the game, but I have been to many, and in many sections (not the student section) there is a lot if sitting and people who stand are pressured to sit. The bid house does have noise problems because it does not hold it well, its a parabolic design and the noise goes straight up and out. For those of you who had the privlidge of being there, i hope you appreciated it and tried to do your best to help the team. And make no mistake - noise helps. Watching on TV is frustrating because you cannot help.  To say that you could not have helped is just wrong - even when they were down - teams come back. We are a pretty erudite fan base - thats the problem.

And for those of you who sold your tickets - shame on you.

So I could have helped by yelling louder when we were on offense? Or defense? What about when my daughter and I went to the bathroom? Is that why Ohio scored to go up 14-3? I guess that one's on me! This is the dumbest thing I've ever read. Why don't you come out and "help" the team? How dare you lecture us on how hard we cheered based on what you saw on TV!

but I'll keep saying that our fanbase is soft. Neg away but we're soft. We're still the nicest, most quiet 110k that will ever be assembled and we're almost unanimously soft as babyshit. I'm not just angry about today either! I'm not mad at all as I expected this today (kinda proud we hit 9 wins, tbh) but the cursing ahead may fool you into thinking I am. I've been saying what OP said for years and it's getting worse. It's time to goonie it up. We have to be goons like every other major CFB program fans, like it or not. We at least have to be at the level of goon we were when I was a kid (80s & 90s) when we didn't take shit from those scumbag fucks. osu/msu fans come to AA with zero restraint to act like they own the place and UM fans travel to their stadium asking advice on how to avoid confrontations and general "they're mean and made me feel bads" stories. It's a joke. I'm not calling for us to hurl batteries or spit on people (really! don't!) but we need to collectively stop selling tix to rival fans as much as each can (stubhub has no way to know etc) and when one osu fan is talking shit standing around a sea of UM fans they need to be shut the fuck down and told their place with a warning that borders on a threat. If they continue they need to be shut up, make them shut up. It's your duty as a fan, IMO! Nut the fuck up if necessary! We're harder on each other than the rival fans that hate us AS PEOPLE and don't hide it. I've been called a "pussy" on here for insinuating we might not win a game by more than 1-1-2 scores but I've seen a few osu and msu fans punk entire groups of UM fans with impunity, immunity and joy. They know we're bitches! Stand up and stop accepting in your house - period! Speaking of standing up: STAND THE FUCK UP AND GET INTO THE GAME! I mean, c'mon. If we're not beating BYU or NW by 35 the crowd is sporadic in their excitement at best. It's been too long and we should be sick of it. Finally, I'm a polite and mild mannered guy but I've backed it up with action: UTL1 had me near 2 douche ND fans acting like they owned the place without another ND within 50 feet. NOBODY spoke up. No matter how vile and disrespectful they became not a single UM fan said a word. So, 3rd quarter I told them to stfu. They said something and shut up for about 3 mins before starting again. I went to them, in their face and told them to stfu and sit down or I'm going to jail or the hospital tonight. They sat quietly the rest of the game and I said "thanks and no hard feelings" after the game with ZERO gloating about the win. UTL2 I was right next to 3 young, very cool ND fans. They were knowledgeable and respectful to everyone around them the entire game. Everyone in the area tried to get them to stay when they thought it was out of reach before the Countess INT. Good guys so we were all good to them. I'm not a big guy, btw! I just refuse to be walked on in our stadium anymore. More need to wake the fuck up, IMO. /end rant, begin neg

I also think there's nothing wrong with encouraging people to support the team, which doesn't have to involve getting in anyone's face. However, if someone thinks I'm too loud at a sporting event, that person may not understand how the whole attending a sporting event thing works.
