OSU/MSU What to root for.

Submitted by WestQuad on

Walking into work this morning (NY State) two people seperately accosted me with a devilish "So you're rooting for Ohio State to win this weekend?"    I replied that I wouldn't mind seeing State lose, but that I was not rooting for Ohio State.   The Freep (no link) had an article asking former Michigan players if they were rooting for OSU and everyone except Jake Long and Jake Ryan said they definitely were not.

What is the best most clever retort to this catch 22 question?

After how many tied OTs do they just call it a draw?

Be a nice screw u for when the tie cost UofM in '73.

Other than that OSU winning 4-2 in 4OTs and JT Barrett getting tackled 20+ times.

I read a similar article on ABC News (Link), not Free Press. I like Henne's reply, "We should have handled it ourselves. I'm not rooting for Ohio State."

However, I want Ohio State to win. And I don't have a clever retort for the trolls at work. I usually activate the death stare, and they go bug someone else.

How about, "Yes, I am rooting for Ohio State this weekend, because it helps Michigan."  Not sure what is complicated about that.

This is basically a repeat of the last day of the 2012 basketball season, but on the gridiron.  That day we had to beat PSU on the road and then hope OSU would beat MSU (though it was in East Lansing).  Both happened and we were Big Ten champs.  I don't think anyone had a problem with OSU winning that day.

I actually always want Michigan to beat an undefeated OSU because it makes the victory bigger and hurts OSU more (A la Eddie George and Touchdown Tim.)   But,  I never want OSU to win any game in the big ten.  It is inherently complicated.

Wanting State to lose to PSU or OSU doesn't mean I have to root for either of those teams.

But not for our benefit.  It's all about maximum pain for O$U should we beat them next weekend!

If Sparty beats O$U then they are out of the CFP.  If we beat them next week it would be painful for them but they're already out.

If O$U beats Sparty then they walk in to the Big House with all their hopes alive and well.  We beat them that day and their pain will be 10x what it would be if they already had a loss.

If that doesn't get to root for O$U then look at it this way ..... don't root for O$U, root against State.  That's easy to do.

Im rooting for michigan to become Big Ten Champs. If spiscific teams need to loose then I root for those teams to lose, plain and simple. Not rooting for osu, not rooting for state. Rooting for Michigan to reclaim its glory by beating Iowa in the Big Ten Championchip game.

no, no, just kidding, yes I don't actually wish to see 18-22 year olds actually get injured....yes, I know it's just a game...

I'll show myself out, thanks

We have to win our last two games, and state has to lose one of their last two for us to win the division. I don't have to root for OSU to beat them this weekend, but obviously it looks better for us to beat an undefeated OSU and then an undefeated Iowa.

I root for Michigan and what's best for Michigan. Period. If that means rooting for OSU to beat somebody then that's what I root for. Whatever is besty for Michigan. Period.

Either an curb-stomping of MSU, or a backbreaking last second loss for MSU, paired with a double digit targeting penalties on OSU defenders in the 2nd half, as they unleash 30  minutes of unnecessary roughness on Connor Cook and his replacements. The win causes the QB core of OSU to go out driving and drinking in which they are stopped by a police officer with a secret allegiance to U of M, who arrests them all, leading to a 1 game suspension.

A boy can dream can't he?

The planes transporting the Steelers and Ravens to their games this week collide over Columbus, and land in the horseshoe, wiping out the Steelers, Ravens, Buckeyes, Spartans, Juggalos and Cooler Poopers all in one fell swoop

But the rooting interest is obvious if we beat Penn State.

The REAL interesting, non-obvious question that this thread should be asking is who to root for in that game if Michigan loses?

Personally, if Michigan loses, I would still slightly pull for OSU to beat MSU.  Reason being that I'd rather have one large enemy than two large enemies.  Think of how much MSU would beat their chest (and gain advantages in recruting) if they win the BIG?

I'd much rather have OSU as our main enemy than both of those schools. MSU looks well on their way to (relative) mediocrity after this season, whereas OSU seems like little can stop them from being a threat. I want one of them to be a challenge every season, so that we don't suffer from a crappy strength of schedule and the season remains interesting, and if I had to choose between the two, I'd actually pick OSU (it might be the punt debacle speaking, but MSU just *really* pisses me off this season).

Anyway, that's a long way of saying that if Michigan loses, I will be .001% happier in my post-loss state of despair if MSU loses, too.

If Michigan beats PSU, I will be rooting for an OSU victory.

If Michigan loses to PSU, I will be rooting for an OSU loss and for both teams to look terrible.

I do not want OSU to make another run at a National Title.

Rooting for OSU to destroy Sparty is rooting for Michigan. Regardless of the hatred that we have for OSU, we NEED them to win in order to keep our BIG 10 title and possible CFP hopes and dreams alive. IT IS THE ONLY WAY PEOPLE. Also, am I the only one that hates to see State pull a win out of their ass every week? They are facing a superior opponent, in a tough atmosphere, and the brutal secondary and beat up O-Line should get exposed. You do not necessarily have to "cheer" for OSU, but be happy to see State get what they finally deserve this season. A good old fashioned ass-whooping. Connor Cook is the only thing that has me worried in this game. It is classic State to play the game of their season against the best team, in the biggest game with big implications. My gut is still telling me OSU is just flat out the better team, and as long as we take care of business in Happy Valley, it will set up the biggest matchup of "The Game" since '06. Go Blue.

Michigan 27-17 PSU

OSU 42-21 MSU

I am rooting for Michigan State to loose and the entire defense of Ohio state to get busted for illegal use of steroids, leading to an investigation that uncovers it use for the last several year. Then they have to forfeit more wins and their nationional championship. They feel so bad Michigan wins for the next decade.

I don't necessarily want Ohio State to crush the spirit of Michigan State, I don't really care about that, but I do want a clearer path to the Big Ten Championship. I am looking forward to that famous Dantonio scowl.

Anyone who mocks you for rooting for a Big 10 Championship shot which can only happen by an OSU win is an idiot, and believe it or not there are a few Michigan fans who don't seem to understand what's at stake.  OSU ending the Sparty facadde and Michigan subsequently ripping the heart out of the trucker state is just the karmic ending all of the programs need.  With that said, I'm nervous about Penn State let alone The Game.
