OT: Spurrier retiring...immediately????
Per @WesMitchellGC and I, we have confirmed that Steve Spurrier plans to retire. No timeline immediately known. He informed team tonight.

I'm worried that there are way too many openings and people are going to be sniffing around all the assistants, but especially Durkin.
Edit: I'm not sure how we are feeling about Football Scoop around here, but...
FootballScoop has learned that South Carolina will name their interim head coach tomorrow morning http://t.co/sD4KPc0THi

I men, I just don't see Spurrier pulling something now, or losing control of his team without there really being any warning signs.
The guy is 70, right? Has to be a sudden health concern or something to that effect.

I think Spurrier senses that his time has come as it does for all coaches. There's a good chance South Carolina goes 0-8 in the SEC this year. He can head down the Paterno or Bowden path, tarnishing his legacy with years of mediocre play and constant scrutiny or he can walk away quietly on his terms.

...by quitting on his team to save himself a few losses on the insane W-L record he's amassed?
I don't see Spurrier doing that. There are 6 games left. Saying "this is it at the end of the year" is saving yourself the Paterno/Bowden path. Quitting now is a sign of something bigger.

I thought he was just announcing that he was done effective at the end of the season. Looks like I may be wrong.

Doesn't say "Immediately" in the SI article, but it sounds like it is...
There HAS to be a good story behind this.

So who is Hatin' Ass Spuriers replacement, then? All I really care about.

Isn't Footballscoop the site that was so wrong on Harbaugh and even had people on the boards here trolling?

Brady has never been a coordinator, so I doubt it.

last two years, in a youth obsessed television industry it won't be but a minute before he's "announcing his retirement."

Either way, this might be what South Carolina needed. Spurrier looks very much like his best days are behind him, and if South Carolina hopes to stay with UF and UGa in the East, they may very well need some new blood.

I think a coach with such a legacy and his players deserve better. But in all reality, the dude has accomplished everything, South Carolina is a big mess right now, better to let someone else give it a shot.

Georgia snaps up all the best players then clemson and Bama too, The cocks are left to pick up the scraps. Were I going in there I'd go right down to Florida for most of my croots.

on grampas cough syrup too? Ah well, I will miss him, he's sort of the Harbaugh if his generation, a guy who could mold QB's who also said whatever he wanted or didn't want whenever he felt like it. An admirable character trait. I'll never forget how ballistic he went when playing Michigan and they gave us that first down when we were short about a yard.

If I were Al Golden, you might want to start bringing your lunch to work, to save a few $$$. Mark Helfrich may also want to look into buying Dr. Thunder or Dr. Bold, this week.
