Semi OT - serious question that WD is afraid to ask...

Submitted by MGJS SuperKick Party on
i know this will get negged to shit, and I am only posting this to make a point to our favorite obsessed fan... WD has a great opportunity to work in the press box going forward this season, and potentially in the future. Tomorrow is his first test run. Ok here comes the fun part -- Me, LongLiveB0, and LSAClassof2000 have all attempted to talk him out of wearing a jersey to the press box and dress more conservative (Think Jay Harbaugh) as opposed to jersey, sweatbands and Harbaugh Khakis. What do you guys think? I am fully anticipating this getting deleted shortly, but it's to prove a point to our idiot buddy. I am sure he will post here to defend his thought process soon enough...

I know a lot of people who look like idiots who wear a suit. Don't believe me. Look at your friend in the photo above. So, don't undersell yourself. Don't wear a suit. Something decent. When you get down to the stands, just take off your shirt and paint your body with maize. You are all set to look like a fan.

Uhmm have anyone of you actually seen the attire that both field photographers and press box videographers wear? It's usually a hoodie with the teams logo and jeans or even more team swag. I think it's almost a requirement. He's not interviewing for Goldman Sachs. Frankly, it doesn't sound like WD is even involved in covering the game from a journalism standpoint. I'm not sure what the consternation is about but WD where the maize with pride. Youre an inspirational fan and I love how passionate you are about the team.

if WD has to go to his seat by kickoff, compromise and have a friend hold your jersey. do your pregame gig in a more professional shirt, and toss the jersey on later. or, don't wear the jersey for one game. I promise you won't be any less of a fan, the team won't play any worse, and you won't lose any mgopoints

WD, based on your description of the situation and opportunity, I seriously doubt anyone will give two shits if you wear the Michigan gear. If you like it, wear it. If this is truly a test run for a cool job, they aren't going to disqualify you for wearing Michigan stuff, and will judge you on your performance/ enthusiasm / apptitude for the gig.

I used to like jerseys too. Now I don't see a point unless I'm also wearing shoulder pads. Get some khakis and a nicer shirt, if you have an M polo or something. It won't kill you for one game and will make a good impression on everyone.

Don't. Dress shirt and slacks. If you want to wear a jersey then carry it with you for the game or have a person you're sitting with carry it in.

This is probably the best advice. If you know you won't be seeing your future bosses later that evening, just bring a change of clothes and get changed into the stuff you actually want to wear after the pregame stuff. But don't fuck up a potential dream job just because you want to look like you fit in with all the other obsessive superfans.

Good advice even for this.  Remember, you can always bring the Jersey and change when you go to your seat.  Be a part of the tribe in the press box, then join the tribe in the bowl.

And have lots of fun!

And may help you in the long run. No pain, no gain buddy, and this is not much pain. Respect the press box and its tradition of non-partisanship. You'll have lots of other games to wear a jersey. It's worth giving it your best shot. Don't cut off your options before you get a chance to see them. "Help me, help you..."

I don't know if you've ever been around that environment or not, especially in a professional role. Just for some perspective, before the Utah game we got a full tour of the production trucks, press boxes and coaches boxes. It's an EXTREMELY professional scene. Nobody who was on the clock was in a jersey, no one. At the very least it was khakis and Michigan or Utah polo. Members of the press were dressed professionally, no exceptions. You will look like an ass and completely out of place in a jersey.

I know that my opinion is worthless to you and I've done nothing to earn otherwise, but seriously, if you are doing this for a job or networking or even anything that promises to pay off at anytime in the future career-wise, just wear the Michigan polo and some khakis. Jerseys are already a polarizing thing to the general public. How do you think a potential employer looking for a professional worker would feel? I know that this year may not be the year that you take over, but next year is the year that all of those people will become your peers and superiors, and do you want them to remember you as that nice kid who really loves Michigan, or that idiot, borderline obsessive fan who everyone thought had just accidentally wandered into places he had no business being in? You only get one chance to make a first impression. I'm saying this as a person who is mildly envious of the position you are in: please do not blow your one shot at this just because you wanted to wear a Michigan jersey instead of a more professional Michigan polo.
