Mattison article
When Mattison agreed to come back as a defensive line coach during the transition i thought that it was good sign, and the resutls on the field (especially from Wormley) seem to bear that out. Anyway, I thought that this article was interesting, and that the quotes from Godin support the idea Mattison sticking around has helped make what was likely to be a good defense a potentially great one.

What's the difference between last year and now? I don't remember the DL looking like this last year even this early. It struggled against freaking Rutgers.

age, experience

I mean, it wasn't very young last year either. Starters were all juniors or seniors. Beyer, Glasgow, Henry, Clark.

I was wondering the same thing. Since 2011 the defense has made great strides but the last two games have seen a different type of hunger and urgency.

I heard we refused to play Orgegon State at least until they exist. If true, that's pretty arrogant of us. Maybe Hackett isn't all we thought he was?...

They where comparing to this time last year and yes the D line looked better against Utah and Oregon state than it did again App. State, Notre Dame and miami Ohio. Chris Wormley alone through two games has better stats than he did all last year combined 11 tackles 6 TFL and 1 sack ( thought he had 2-3 sacks but i'm wrong). We haven't had anyone play even close to this on the inside since Martin graduated

I'm not 100% sure about that. Their defense would be extremely tough for our offense right now but, they did come within one play of losing to Virginia on the road.

Harbaugh? HARBAUGH!

A coaching staff not trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Who knew using players strengths to shape a defense would yeild promising results.

Awesome article. So glad Mattison decided to stay on the staff. The D line has looked great so far and Wormley has been a straight up beast.

That 6'7 white qb was one of the greatest qb's with his fakes that I've ever seen. I was constantly fooled about who had the ball by that guy, I'm sure the D was also because he was great in the ball handling aspect. He's also quick, shifty & pretty speedy, with good vision, and he made the right cuts.
Harbaugh needs to teach that kind of ball handling to his qb's. It makes it harder to defend everything.

yea white defensive linemen suck. I'm assuming you're joking but, I couldn't resist.

Touche. A little different though. I'm just saying I wouldn't get overly confident in this D. I watched a 6'7 athletic qb (I shouldn't have said white) run on us and it exposed a weakness. In my eyes there's still a lack of game changing athletic ability in our front seven. First game I know and I still think they're going to be damn good.

NW is ok but I think their season opening win was against a Stanford team that is on its way back to where they were before Harbaugh.
NW has played Michigan tough the last few years, hoping that changes this year. No more M00N games please!

I love Mattison. And I hope he sticks around for a long time. Great coach. I realize it isn't popular, but you know, I think the defense would have still been decent this year under Hoke. Because the defense would belong to Mattison. It takes some time to get everything working right. Thing is, I am pretty sure that Mattison is very happy cutting back a little bit, and being the defensive line coach.
Ummh, one thing that I believe is helping the defense is Michigan's offense. I know that Brian isn't a big time of possession guy. But I really believe that because Michigan's offense has stayed on the field longer, the defense doesn't get overextended and exhausted. Michigan's time of possession was 38:01. Oregon State's time of possession was 21:59. In other words, Michigan's offense was on the field about 2 minutes for every minute Oregon State was there. Michigan's defense was well rested, and this really showed in the second half. Mattison couldn't do anything about the offense, but the defense was worn out too often last year. If Harbaugh, Drevno, Rudock, and the OL can continue to extend drives and score, this is going to be huge for the defense, and allow Mattison (and Durkin) to be even more aggressive.

We won the time of possession battle in something like 9 of 12 games last year. That isn't it either.
