1 hour 51 minutes
"MISTER HARBAUGH, WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DEFENSE AS A 3-4 DESPITE THE LACK OF A TWO GAP NOSE TACKLE?" [Fuller]
SEASON PREVIEWIN'
QB: average == heaven.
RB: many options, no certainty.
WR: fewer options, no certainty.
TE: lots of options. Butt!
OL: Pretty set, but how will they play?
DE: Will a WDE/buck/hero/leo/taco step forward?
DT: Still pretty deep, but no Mone hurts.
LB: Many seniors. Few snaps?
DB: We forgot to mention Peppers. Sorry for the oversight.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Hail Baxter.
UNIFORM STUFF
Liz Crowe sits in as we talk all-white uniforms. No news, as everyone's in the submarine. I talk about the hypocrisy of me having a fashion opinion about anything. This is actually the second segment. Please do not be alarmed when I say "let's talk about the defense" and then it doesn't happen immediately. Everything will be all right.

If we had one guy returning, and these were his numbers:
Carries | Yards | TD | Average |
250 | 1,351 | 13 |
5.40 |
Wouldn't everyone be pumped? Because that is what our three returning backs combined for. Assuming 1 of the 3 guys can stay healthy, or that Ty Isaac emerges, I think that we are going to be in really good shape. Plus we return our entire line (excluding miller).

That hypothetical running back would only be the 28th best RB last season for total yards:

The single biggest issue of the Hoke error (the RR error too, besides the crappy D) was Turnovers.
This years team will end up in the Positive Turnover ratio for the first time in probably 8 seasons (not sure where they were in 11).
For that reason, I see a 10 win season this year.
Yes 10 wins.
August 18th, 2015 at 6:52 PM ^
anyone who thinks that's impossible thinks Harbaugh can't do what Hoke was capable of doing. Cannot wait!

Eliminate the turnovers with an excellent D and all of a sudden the offense is "good". This is why the addition of Ruddock along with a veteran line and stable of backs is so important. Great coaches know how to coach up teams to cut down on turnovers. Nick Sabans first good Bama teams were not "explosive". He built up that program on excellent defense, running game and low turnovers.

I'm not sure our D is on the level to carry a safe offense to 10 wins. If we had a proven edge rush I'd be more confident but we don't. Unless one or two guys really step up big at DE, we'll have a good defense but short of elite.

Don't think you're ever gonna hear that podcast where Brian doesn't get mad about a burned redshirt, a frustrating recruiting loss or whatever. He seems like a huge dweller.

It was relevant to describing Gedeon’s development. That’s hardly worthy of criticism.

I disagree on two things. First, I think Ojemudia is actually a plus defender on first and second down, especially against option teams. I watched him in particular on a couple reviews of games this summer, and he's always in the right spot. I think he's going to continue to get better, and maybe even get some pass rush. I think he'll be good enough to push Marshall to a situational/rotational player.
Second, I think Countess leaving isn't terrible. He really is just not what they need to run what they want. Watching the Rutgers game and ask yourself whether you trust that guy.

I'm listening to the podcast ... rather than doing any work. :-)
The interplay between Brian and Ace is really good ... the back and forth in a really balanced way. I'm sure that's not as easy as it seems ... so kudos to both for a fine job making this a well-paced and enjoyable show!

I've never felt comfortable with the term "decoy." for an offensive player. I get the incentive to letting Charles Woodson or Jabrill Peppers run a route, or putting Denard on the field with Gardner when he's too hurt to throw the ball. But why refer to it as a decoy, and not simply as another wide receiver? Is the implication that the player will never see the ball go their way, so you're hoping the defense will overcommit to them (like draw a doubleteam)? Seems like a defensive coordinator would respond by committing fewer defenders to that player.
What am I missing here?
August 20th, 2015 at 7:22 AM ^
Yeah, I'm not sure exhausting a prime player --especially when returns and punts are also a part of the athlete's duties-- by having him act as a decoy is the right thing. I remember a BTN piece on the 97 team, where someone was quoted as saying that Charles was never a decoy. If No.2 was in on offense, he was the target. My memory is a little different. I seem to recall Keith Jackson and Bob Griese always making sure to hi-lite when Woodson came in on offense, and he wasn't always thrown at. Then again, that was a long time ago. It'll be interesting to see how much Peppers can handle.

They're worried about the white jerseys and pants getting dirty with grass stains, but Michigan only plays one game all season on grass.
August 19th, 2015 at 4:16 PM ^
Just a theory but maybe Jake and Shane platoon the QB spot. Jake is the guy but Shane provides some running in some key situations and fakes a few teams out.
And now your gratuitous Harbaugh: Harbaugh.
Getting really pumped for the campaign.
August 19th, 2015 at 8:30 PM ^
Hopefully we have a good year because it's a lot more fun to listen after a big win. The last time Brian and Ace were euphoric was after UTL 2.
