Berkeley tried this same gambit a while back… and the result is one of the most beautiful stadiums I’ve ever been to, with the most lackluster attendance imaginable. This money could have gone to literally any of the other decrepit buildings on campus (other than the law school or Haas, which unsurprisingly have lovely facilities).

Oooo, I am doing…

Oooo, I am doing surprisingly well for no good reason whatsoever. Michigan’s season was grim and I have a toddler, so I didn’t follow college basketball this year and had no idea what I was doing. Good friends went to KSU and SDSU, and Gonzaga and Creighton are Jesuit which seemed like a decent reason to have them going through. I think I’ve won my bracket already!

Free content is cool and all, but the difficulty in viewing the new site on a mobile platform is a real issue. That said, as long as Brian and co. continue to produce a steady stream of podcast content, I won’t miss the site all that much. To be honest I’m only on the site right now because I’m on a cross country flight.

Wheeeeeeee!!!!!

Didn’t see Brett Brown (probably) in the article, but I think he’s underrated.

I got free books from Michigan as part of my scholarship... and I for sure sold them after I read them. Not to mention that basically every PhD student at the university does exactly the same thing.

This essay is a pretty…

This essay is a pretty fantastic example of what discourse might be like amongst a thoughtful and engaged citizenry. Of course this is Brian’s blog, so he can use it as a soap box if he wants, but I would prefer a dialogue. Perhaps MgoBlog can host a rebuttal (not in the comments section, and edited for outright mendacity). I’m sure there are thoughtful people on the opposite side of the issue who are interested in engaging in a structured public debate for the ages:

Lippmann-Dewey (1922)

Baldwin-Buckley (1965)

Cook-??? (2018)

Honestly I just never make a…

Honestly I just never make a point to check on the board.

The same was true with the old site. With the old site I would navigate to the site a couple times a day to check in on Brian and Ace, and I would see the board posts on the right and would get sucked into a discussion despite myself.

With the new site I need to consciously think “better check on the board” which I only do once or twice a week. This just shows me whatever random posts happen to be at the top of the list. Maybe it is just OT season, but for some reason the posts don’t inspire me to jump into the conversation.

Oh well, I’m also fine just reading the main articles.

Damn, the ringer got a scoop

Best “actual reporting” I have seen from the Simmons site in a while. Well done!
Now go out there and get a wolverine on staff pls. I’m sure Bacon could recommend a talented young writer from one of his courses.

But I see why a major institution would not want to be too reliant on the whims of state politics. (deleted)

The mere fact

that this is how you break your silence means you’re not ready for pop pop.

Good call

I just drank a Leopolds martini earlier tonight out in Berkeley California. Takes me back — not to mention the fact that they still make a seriously good gin (nostalgia aside) somewhere in Colorado.

Old town was literally the first and last bar that I patronized in Ann Arbor.
I grabbed a beer with a friend the day I arrived, and I prepped for my defense with a burger and a coke in the back corner booth.
I bought a t shirt.

Agree

I hope he lands elsewhere TBH but I figure people land head coaching gigs after landings a number of interviews and slowly building momentum over a number of cycles.

That takes balls!

At Bobby G’s in Berkeley, CA and every basket in the second half elicited racus cheers. Ended with a hearty HTTV. A very sympathetic crew out here.
Go blue!

Thanks for posting!

Haven't watched the Knicks all year but Burke is looking great.

All business. Sick cornrows. Good chemistry with Beasley.

Solid move by Matthews

On to the elite 8!

Well done Brian!

“Arby’s Ouroboros” is an all time great MGoBlog title, maybe just a spot or two behind “Unverified Voracity”

The wave field

On north campus there is a strange and fun sculpture called the Wave Field by Maya Lin (also designed the Vietnam War Memorial). Worth a quick visit while you are up there, though it is a bit out of the way unless you are going through the aerospace building.

Surface parking is a waste

Haven't reviewed AA zoning code, but it seems like an easy solution would be to incentivize including underground public parking in any new development (maybe a FAR bonus or tax relief etc.). If downtown is truly desirable real estate, this would not prevent development. I would also be curious to know about the tax history of these lots; more often than not, surface parking lots are simply land banks for future development when property values go up.

Seems like Harbaugh was just doing his job

At least according to the transcript he answered the questions that were asked of him (such as they were).

Question: did you pull the RB after the fumble to provide a teachable moment like you did with the quarterback?

Answer: no, we have a running back platoon, substituting a running back is different from substituting a quarterback.

That's about how it went, right?

I hesitate to read too much into this, but I think this game was a moral triumph.

From my cold dead hands

Love my SE

This is the only rationale that makes sense to me.

Seriously, would anybody be bummed if the pistons overpaid for Tim Hardaway Jr.? Objectively he is an OK player, a starter according to some, but notoriously streaky and a blah defender, so probably not a great roster move for a middling team like Detroit. However, I would totally pay good money to go to Pistons games on the 10% chance that THJr. transforms into Kobe Bryant for a couple quarters. Even if the team isn't going anywhere, my nostalgia for OUR CHAMPIONSHIP run would be a strong incentive to shell out for a few NBA games each season when I'm back in Detroit. (I really hope this happens BTW, would be super fun!)

Obviously Olidipo is a very different kind of player (read: active defender), but I'm sure it would be a similar scenario for Hoosiers fans. With more touches and a sympathetic fan base, Olidipo will probably thrive.

The KGB was founded in 1954.

Previous to its founding the Soviets only screened highly edited versions of early Serge Eisenstein films. Everything was just a montage of black and white.

His KD interviews are solid

He should stick to podcasting, his shows are entertaining and not too heavy

I'll say this for the browns

They didn't reach on a QB. They got the concensus #1 pick. And they got our guy, who was probably considered a consensus top 5 pick before the Iowa debacle. Things lookin up in Cleveland?

Also, Catholicism

I'd be curious to know if ND's status as a premiere religious institution is a draw for many athletes. My brother was a pretty devoted catholic, which profoundly shaped his choice of college...
Not that Kelly is a paragon of virtue in this regard, but maybe some athletes chose the school despite the coach's personal failings.

An Irish Fan

He now roots for Michigan in all games when they do not play ND.

N.B. this still doesn't actually make sense to me.

Drove to west Texas to backpack along a dry stretch of the Rio Grande. Spent several days crossing back and forth... and I didn't even have a passport... This was 20 years ago, probably not something you can do as easily now, but was a beautiful and surreal experience walking through the sand of a dry river bed for days.

Great question.

Michigan / MSU is #1 in my mind.

I think Texas + OK may have had a decent 2-sport rivalry over the years, but I can't think of a time when all 4 teams were simultaneously good/great.

Louisville might be on the way to developing a 2-sport rivalry with. . . somebody? FSU, possibly? Maybe ND, just because of their pedigree?

Thanks buddy

I do hope people listen to this, Jake does a great job and reps Michigan well. Interviews with Robert Mayes can be a bit of a clown show, but this one is decent. The conversation centers on the relative importance of the NFL combine. In particular they discuss how teams are primarily interested in JB for his intelligence and capacity to understand an intricate offensive scheme (as opposed to his 40 time).

MSU has lost their legs

Kinda sad to watch actually.

If Mo Wagner ultimately lands

If Mo Wagner ultimately lands in the lottery we might draw some more Euro recruits who want to go to college This is obviously a limited group as far as it goes; not a good way to build a team, but perhaps a way to periodically snag talented players who would be close to 5* if they were from the US. JB's system certainly can showcase the skills of shooting big men.
