OT: The 10 Snobbiest Places in Michigan

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

I think this article fits in nicely with the granite countertop and private school theme we have going on this week.

Their methodology does appear to be somewhat flawed, as Birmingham didn't make the list and Royal Oak is #4.

TL:DR

Northville, Rochester, Plymouth, Royal Oak, Traverse City, Petoskey, Troy, Novi, Okemos, Saline.

As someone that has lived in Northville my whole life except my first two years at school in Ann Arbor, I'm not at all surprised by Northville being number one (still love my home town though). But this article and the "facts" it uses to measure snobbiness are unbelievably dumb. They use the amount of private high schools in the area as a measuring stick, when the best high school in the Northville area is bar none Northville public high school...

Clarkston, really? I think it's the most laid back burb. Great town. High school is getting so huge though, wonder if that will become an issue in the near future. Could also use a high end grocer, so moms don't have to keep driving to Rochester's Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.

Saline might not even be among in the top ten snobbiest places in Washtenaw County.

Chelsea

Dexter

Ann Arbor

Manchester

arguably Ypsi (in a 1990s Brooklyn sort of way)

OK, there aren't ten places in Washtenaw County  -- but you get my drift

I live in Petoskey and don't feel that people here are snobby at all, but what do I know?

For those of you who have made the trip up to Petoskey, do you think it is?

How many year-round residents does Petoskey have? There has to be a huge influx of vacation home owning "residents" for 8 months out of the year. Those people might be a bit dickish. Of course, that place is a congested nightmare for those 8 months so it might only be that they're sick to death of all the traffic.

That's the case for Harbor too though (based on having lived there for over 20 years). The locals are much the same as you'd find anywhere else in northern MI, but then you've got the people who have summer homes there and it makes a huge difference.

It was always my impression that the wealthy people in Harbor (most typically associated with Harbor Point) were the "old money" types whose wealth and homes had been in the family for generations. The folks in Petoskey (best exemplified by Bay Harbor, which itself hasn't even been there for 20 years yet) seemed to have made their own money during their lifetime. The former is the more overt snobbery that people in this discussion have picked up on; the latter is not to be underestimated. Either way, as a local you often have to grin and bear it, recognizing that many people's livelihoods depend on welcoming all manner of folks into the community during the summer months.

The Bay Harbor Golf Club residents were kind of awful when I worked there. Pretentious, entitled old farts. Didn't have a lot of interaction with the Yacht Club proper, but the boaters that came through Bay Harbor were actually pretty nice for the most part, despite obviously being quite wealthy.

I'm surprised Ann Arbor isn't on it. I had some friends that went to Eastern and we'd go downtown AA every now and then and some of the treatment from UM students was just downright despicable. And it's kind of a hipster-y place. But I could see the residents being better than the student body.

outsider who has never lived there but spent considerable time there, Ann Arbor is just a weird place.  You feel like you don't want to touch anything or you might break it.  You feel like you can walk for miles toward certain landmarks and never get there, and many of the streets look identical leading to the feeling that you are always lost.  I love going to Ann Arbor for games but it is just kind of an odd place otherwise, IMHO.

for 6 years and I really can't picture where you might be talking about.  Main St. has some fancy shops and the like, but even there they let you pick up/touch everything.  The only streets that ever confused me by looking similar were maybe S Forest and Church + the student ghetto.

I will agree on one point, though: it is an odd place.  My favorite place. :)

First of all the criteria for being on the list is highly questionable.  Second, to not have old money cities like Grosse Pointe, Birmingham, and Bloomfield Hills is ridiculous.  Petoskey shouldn't be on the list, but it's neighbor Harbor Springs definitely should.  Mostly everyone there (mainly in the summer) are rich people from Chicago or the southern part of the state.  Despite not being that big, they actually have a yacht dealer in town as well as a yacht club.  If that isn't snobby, I don't know what it.
