OT: Long weekend plans - Humblebragging edition

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

I'll be spending most of the long weekend with people I'm not exactly fond of, doing things I'd rather not do.

Is anyone doing something fun this weekend?  Taking the boat out?  Getting on a plane and taking a vacation?  Two chicks at the same time?

Tell us all about your plans.

Volunteering at the VA over Saturday and Sunday, then Monday going to my grandfathers grave at the National Cemetery in Holly.

You know, doing things to memorialize our veterans.

Golfing with my Greek friend George tomorrow morning, then having a pool party/BBQ is my backyard on Sunday with my wifes family (because mine is in Michigan).  I'm cooking this:

http://www.mmmgoblubbq.com/2014/08/hot-n-fast-pulled-pork-w-carolina-slaw.html

I've done it once before and everyone loved it some I'm doing it again.  I don't do the slaw part (just because it's more work) but the pulled pork comes out amazing.  I buy slider buns and throw out a few different sauces (BBQ, 1000 Island, buffalo, anything else in the fridge) and it goes over really well.  If you're eating around lunch time, you need to start smoking pretty early, but it's totally worth it.

EDIT:  Does anyone know how to post pictures on a Mac?  I knew how to do it on my PC, but without my right click button I don't know how to get the picture thing I need to C&P.  Thanks.

My son plays his last double header of freshman year tomorrow and my daughter has a softball tournament all weekend. For those of you in the Chicago area who are interested in girls' softball, the Evanston Express is hosting their annual Memorial Day Tournament in James Park this weekend. 30 teams from all over Illinois participate. You can expect some decent softball from the older girls. My daughter is 12U, but the 14U's and up are pretty good.

Tradition with a few of our friends, going on three years now. Lots of sun, country music, southern food, and most importantly beers in my future.

Normal weekend of golf and drinking. I'll just have an extra day to recover.

I'd like to thank all those in the armed forces for their service.

"We'll be there all weekend" = You will be on I95 all weekend.  Traffic has already sucked balls this week.  Today is going to especially crappy.

Probably doing a day-trip to Rehoboth Beach Sunday.

We place American flags at every veterans' grave at Botsford Cemetery in Ann Arbor.  It is a small cemetery that requires its inhabitants to have resided within one mile of the site.

It makes one feel proud of those gents and ladies; grateful that they served to guarantee our freedom.  There are about 57 veterans buried there.

Also, Nectar Meadery in Ferndale is having their Spring Party tomorrow.  Should be a hoot.

My first vacation of  2015 was in Ann Arbor/Detroit because Detroit was my home for first 11 years of my life and also I want to go to the spring game. But when I do travel its for work and I will be in St Louis next weekend for my job. I do write for a drag racing website.

so I'll be on Erie tomorrow hunting for Walleyes. Hopefully we will be able to keep all the white bass off the line. Have heard they are coming in pretty thick right now.

I really need to make it up there soon.  Thinking about doing a big loop through Oregon the next time I get a long weekend and hitting the big spots.  St. Helens, Mt. Hood, Crater Lake, Bend and Portland are all on my list.  Might need to split it up though, or just take some vacation time.  If you've got some under-the-radar spots you don't mind giving up to a random dude on the internet I'm all ears.

I'm doing St. Helens the 30th, but I'm gearing up for a June 20 climb of Mount Adams, which is one of the forgotten mountains of the Cascades. More than 1,000 feet higher than Hood, but no ropes required. Just an axe and possibly crampons, and glissading down is supposed to be the best part. Youtube search "glissading Mount Adams" and you'll see what I mean.

Also, the Olympics, Goat Rocks Wilderness, Loowit Trail around St. Helens, South Sisters, Broken Top... The list is endless. If you ever do plan to climb MSH, you need a permit and you need to reserve early. The permits go on sale Feb. 1 and most are gone the next day. Only 100 people per day get to summit.

That's way up there - almost Oregon.  Very, very pretty and certainly plenty removed from all the hustle.

Just so people get an idea of where this is in CA, this is about 250 miles north of San Francisco, maybe more depending on where you are.  So think about going to "Northern California" then driving 250 north of that.  Very, very pretty country.

I moved up here for work recently, and have completely fallen in love with the Alps.  So many endless trails and epic scenery - rivaling some of the best spots in the Sierra, IMO - and it's remote enough that it keeps the crowds down aside from a few of the flagship trails.  Plus, this is only one wilderness area of several in the area, including the coastal redwoods.  And I haven't even crossed into Oregon yet.  I think I'm gunna like it up here.

Bike race in Frankenmuth tomorrow followed by a nice chicken dinner. A quick stop by the parents' house then a weekend of relaxing and keeping an eye on the dog's ear infection.

Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.

Finally getting a break from work, so I'm going to catch up and go on a movie-watching marathon.

First up, Mad Max, then Avengers, and then Pitch Perfect 2 with the lady friend.  Okay, I admit, part of me wants to see it too.

Then probably a bbq with some friends on Monday.

Yoga, Crew game, gym, helping a friend build a swingset, friend's birthday party, gym, cookout, yoga or gym, homework.  Sprinkle in a few beers and a run or two, and that's about it.

Then begins my final week of teaching of the school-year.  Huzzah.

My parents coming up to stay with us all weekend.  My dad, my son, my brother and myself will enjoy a few rounds of golf, complete with multiple beers and some kush.  Probably opening the pool this weekend too but it won't be ready for a week or so.

Memorial day, the rest of the family is coming up for some good times and good BBQ.

Watching a couple of my son's lax games, then driving up to Wisconsin northwoods to open up the cabin.   Will probably crack a few icy beers while lounging on the dock.  Maybe a little fishing.

Since it's Memorial Day weekend, I also look forward to devouring a Shaara historical novel (thanks to MGoBlog for getting me hooked on the Shaara books from a thread awhile back).   I will also pay respect to those who sacrificed everything for our country.
