I have really learned to not trust an ounce of DiNardo's evaluations. There's a reason he was a bum coach and is stuck on BTN.

That being said, I thought what Marcus Ray had some interesting evals yesterday. He said no one QB excels at all phases of the passing game: Malzone is best rolling out, extending plays, and throwing on the run, but has trouble seeing in the pocket sometimes. Speight is the best drop back passer, exceling in the pocket, but can get caught from the backside on bootlegs. Morris looks best throwing screens and has the strongest arm but has the least accuracy and doesn't have/know when to employ the touch that Speight has.

I don't think Harbaugh would name a starter either.  But practice hasn't been on lock down.  The many reports we've been getting would notice if Malzone had pulled so far a head of the pack.  Look, I'm excited for Malzone too; his high school film and career are amazing (didn't he win like 33 straight games or something).  But I think you're idealizing him; it's the whole 'the back-up QB is everyones favorite QB' type thing.  Since he hasn't done anything on the field to prove he doesn't have it yet, you can't criticize him.  But he's still a freshman.  He may win the job in the end, but I wouldn't put him as the front runner yet; I don't think there's any real evidence to say that.

You despise Dinardo and he's relegated to BTN, but Marcus Ray - who is trying desperately to find a permanent role on BTN, is fine?

What I took from Ray's comments: the QB's are terrible.  He described them as mid-level guys, and they're struggling.  Talked about picks and tipped balls throughout.  We really need that Ruddock kid to come in.

If Speight's main issue is getting caugh from behind on bootlegs - but has an accurate arm, gets past his first read, throws to the right person in his progression and has nice touch... then I'll be a happy camper.  Just don't run bootlegs.

The stuff Malzone sounds like he is struggling with is typical for a bushy tailed bright eyed freshman.  The stuff Morris sounds like he is struggling with sound no different than reports since his JR year in HS.

No idea if Speight is the answer but his weakness compared to the others is a lot less of a QB issue.  Navarre and Grbac would get caught from behind on any bootleg too.

I kind of believe his observations. I think that each of the three main guys battling now have their different strengths. It probably depends on which situation you view them in, one can seem like the better QB and the next moment it could be another. I don't think there is clear seperation yet between the three.

If there is one thing I've learned over the past three years it is not to take DiNiardo's words with a grain of salt, it's to not listen to him at all. We should have some clarity after the spring game, until then I don't think we'll know much.

Since it was DiNardo, I'm going to take this with a HUGE grain of salt.  Have heard great things about Morris as of late, but it all depends on which practice you watch.  No consistency at this point.

We keep hearing different stories from different sources. Obviously all of these guys at QB have parts of their game that Harbaugh can work with. Morris - Best arm, Speight - Best drop back passer / solid touch, Malzone - less bad habits, most agile, ability to forget the bad on a moments notice. Add in Rudock (hopefully) and I'm confident Harbaugh will be able to find a serviceable tarting QB.

...whoever looks good depends on the play call.  Right now, each QB has significant strengths/weaknesses such that if they're in there when the call plays to their strengths, they look good.

Whichever QB can improve on his weaknesses the most will be the starter.  They'd better hurry up, though, b/c if they don't do it soon, Gentry and/or Rudock will have a great shot to win it.

Jackson split time with another QB as a junior in 2014. I have also heard not-so-positive comments regarding his attitude. Plus I wasn't that high on his film. I ranked him #22 in the state (LINK).

There's actually another QB in the state, Trishton Jackson from West Bloomfield, who's probably a better athlete.

if you were to watch 3 consecutive practices, you would probably name 3 different starters. There is a long, long way to go. I'm more interested in the body of work and how they fit into whatever the base offense is going to be. I'm confident we'll have a game manager the first year.
