OT: Lions venting thread / dead inside

Submitted by AeonBlue on

It's weird to feel feelings about football stuff. I don't like it. Vent here.

I'm sadly not surprised; I knew once they settled for FGs on those last two scoring drives that they would lose because that is what being a Lions fan means.  The officiating was terrible, and it does make me seriously wonder the "great" Dallas offensive line that gets away with an incredible number of holds.  I've never seen a DPI picked up, at least in recent memory, and certainly not after something so blatant.  Yes, the defense and offense should have done better, but both performed adequately to win this game.  I'm sure the NFL will come out with some official statement chastising the officials and all, but this team is going to be worse next year with Suh and (probably) Austin gone, and it sucks that they had a chance to at least win a playoff game and it was snatched away because the refs were either incredibly incompetent or in some way influenced by an outside force.

Is on 97.1 now saying the fix was in, it's practically anarchy in the NFL if you think about it.  It looks prettty bad with Chris Christie is Jerry's box, even Strahan & Howie joked about it.  Seemed rather brazen to me BTW, I'll bet the NFL Sith Masters/gestapo will get to them, heh, heh.

I really have lost a great deal of respect for the NFL, not that they have much

Can someone explain to me why Bryant can run into the field without a helmet and yell at the ref and not get flagged? Would love to hear the refs explanation for that. I'm still venting

As a 36 year old man who has watched football, both college and pro, religiously since I was 3 years old, I heretofore officially quit the NFL. Fuck fantasy, fuck the Super Bowl. Done.

Maybe the Lions still lose if the refs don't pick up the pass interference, or call the clear unsportsmanlike/sideline infraction (take your pick on Bryant) or if the call the blatant hold or tackle on Suh Dallas' last TD, or call the Suh-like stomp, but at least it woulda been fair. The refs blatantly steering the games has gotten so bad the product is unwatchable.

Hasn't the Super Bowl sucked for a long time?  I mean other than the 9 hours of commercials for an already over commercialized pile of crap featuring a well known singer for the halftime show so you have something to look forward to after excessive eating and drinking for no logical reason and then oh yes there is the segment on memorable coin tosses from prior years.

SUCK IT NFL!

Just when you think those jerks can't be any worse, they dig deep and blow away your wildest expectatons.

Jim Joyce actually apologized so there is nothing to really hate on there. He was big enough to admit the mistake.

Screw the rest of them.  NFL sucks, period.

There is no forigiving Joyce. It wasn't just a no no...it was a perfect game. Even if he got wrong,  on the good side, Cleveland would have just walkd to the dugouts. Watch his face, it said, I am going to make this call cause I'm the man, look at me.

But we shouldn't even know you're there if you're doing you're job. He and his ego asked for it. He, luckily for him, just happen to screw over the most gracious man to ever take a shaft publically.

Fuck Jim Joyce!!!

Lions today. Especially at the end. Seriously the NFL wanted Dallas in so bad it was obvious. I'm not even a Lion Fan but damn I saw it clean as day. Then to see the refs pull up the flag with no explanation, Mike Florio said it was a blatant flag!! Detroit gets at least 3 points on that drive alone. I'm serious sick of the refs doing this shit!

1) I am a 47 year old Dad and faithful (lunatic) Lions fan. I watched this game with my 14 and 8 year old son. Both of them livid and besides themselves with the transpiring of events of that game. To have them sit there and ask you, "Why Dad, why?" That is too much to bear now. With what went down today, and last week in GB, and the incompetence of the BS reporting over the Harbaugh. The NFL has now officially turned into the NBA and WWE wrestling 2) Did anyone else hear the post game comments that was picked up on ESPN's mic from the Cardinal said to Newton after the game? He wished Newton, "Good Luck in Seattle next week." How did he already know that the Lions were going to lose and the Panthers were going to Seattle already? It was so bad that Trico had to say something on air to clarify things. I am sure it was purely coincidence. / Takes off tin foil hat now......

so i realize this will be an unpopular opinion, but i think the PI getting picked up simply made up for the running into the kicker earlier in the game that ended up allowing the lions to score 7 points they shouldnt have. so that couldve changed the game right there. not to mention, the lions then proceeded to run into dallas's punter and there was no call.

neither of them were really flag worthy, but if one of them got called, the other shouldve been too. consistency.

the holding calls on the lions on the Td drive were necessary. levy tackles dunbar on the screen attempt. how can that not be called?

as far as some holding on suh, probably shouldve been called a few times. but there some holding calls missed for both sides.

ok, thats my neutral opinion on the game/officiating.

They called running into the kicker, which he clearly did. Even at that point it was only a 5 yard penalty which gave them a first down at what, the 11 yard line? It was a legit call and wasn't exactly handing the lions points. If Dallas needed a make up call for that, when the hell was Detroit going to get any of theirs?

Did you watch the game? 1) As Mgoblue noted, Dallas was called for running into the kicker. In the play you are referring to, did you not see the Dallas blocker GRABBING thenLions facemask while he pushed him into the punter? 2) Levy tackles Dunbar? Did you also notice that Smith was jamming his left hand into Ziggy's face on the same play? or maybe the PI call they flagged Carey on 3rd down the play before? It just comes down to the PI call that got picked up? The refs blew that play on so many levels that it is difficult to accept, but of course we 'have' to cause there is no recourse. Please try not to justify the blown call. It is what it is. The sun will come up tomorrow and life will move on, but this sucks right now.....

Consistency does not mean that you need to assess "make up calls" to "even-out" the balance of the number of calls, etc.  It means that your definition of what a a particular penalty is does not change but remains consistent.  If a ref is trying to make sure he calls the same number of penalties on both teams then he won't have his job very long.

We've all seen both of these types of calls made in every NFL game - PI certainly, and running into the punter is called often.  If you don't protect the punter they will get killed.  About the only time they don't call roughing is if the defender is blocked into the kicker.

The unforgiveable aspect is the fact that the PI flag was picked up, with no explanation given during the game, not even until 1-2 hrs after the game was the explanation released!

Okay, so the refs blew the call. It wasn't a scoring play so anything that would have happened after that 1st down would have been pure conjecture. Anyway, if you want to blame the refs for 1 play, fine. Ask yourself though what were the Lions doing the other 59:45 of the game? Sorry, but after 57 years of losing, I just don't get emotional about the Lions. After two generations of being losers, I don't understand the loyalty of this fanbase that warrants a venting. I get upset about a Michigan loss. The Lions lose, meh.

It was essentially a scoring play.  That call directly cost the Lions at least three points, and the absurd defensive holding call gave Dallas another 4.  The officials were the difference in this game.

mgoblue0970

January 5th, 2015 at 12:06 AM ^

Bullshit. It was not a scoring play. "Essentially" means jack shit. Nobody knows what would have happened on the next play. You know who blames the refs? Losers do. Couch potatoes do. That's why Caldwell hasn't said jack. He knows the Lions screwed the pooch -- a game is 60:00 long, not just one play. The Lions blew a 14 - 0 lead; got outscored 24 - 6 the rest of the way while settling for FGs. And that last part is pure fact. "Essentially" is not fact.

Do you know who gets bent over and fucked up the ass willingly and doesn't utter a peep? It is sixty minutes long and the refs should do their job with integrity for all sixty minutes. It wasnt like it was an instantaneous decision. It was fixed and that my  ulttruistic, chest thumping friend needs to be called to the carpet.

If the officials had made the correct calls on that play, the Lions would have had a 1st down at the 14 yard line.  Even if they gained zero yardage, that would have been a 31 yard FG, which NFL kickers convert at a rate above 90%.  So like I said, it was essentially a scoring play.

You know who ignores obvious horrible calls that drastically affect the outcome of a game? Idiots.  That's why Caldwell said the explanation from the officials was not good enough.

Moron.

mgoblue0970

January 5th, 2015 at 12:45 PM ^

1 play out of 67 plays total is drastically affecting the game?! You are the epitome of hyperbole. Yet again, for the sake of argument, I'll give you that call hurt the Lions. What's your excuse for the other 66 plays then -- moron? "the Lions would have had a 1st down at the 14 yard line. Even if they gained zero yardage, that would have been a 31 yard FG, which NFL kickers convert at a rate above 90%" When you have to say "if", that means nobody knows the outcome. There are no guarantees. I guess the refs are to blame for the Lions blowing a 14-0 lead too huh? I guess the refs are to blame for Dallas outscoring the Lions 24-6 down the stretch. I guess the refs are to blame for the Fords incompetence for 57 years. Hell, at your rate, why not blame the refs for global warming??? Anything else you want to blame the refs for while you're at it?

KO Stradivarius

January 5th, 2015 at 1:35 PM ^

Of course there are no guarantees...the point is that the game was about 7/8 completed and it was a critical point in the game when the Lions needed to score, eat more clock, create momentum/confidence, keep Lions defense off of the field/Cowboy's D on field, etc.

"I'm not going to sit up here and act like that was the call that made the difference in the game," Caldwell said. "We still had our chances."
"To lose it also on a somewhat controversial issue, the one thing I told them is we're not going to ever make excuses or create any crutches about wins or losses," Caldwell said Monday in his season-ending press conference. "This particular case will be no exception."
Well, I guess according to the logic in here, Caldwell is an idiot and a moron too then.

I'm getting sick of watching this NFL shit! The Ford family just needs to sell the Lions and let us start from scratch with a new NFL franchise. This fucking team is cursed and the league doesn't like anything from Detroit! Refs and the League will always be anti-lion!

I'd be much happier watching Michigan win playoffs game then the watching the stupid  bowl!

Without even looking at any of the other threads on the board, I'll just say Sal. Quattro is huge Detroit Lions troll. Hate this kid.

That was the worst call in the NFL playoffs since the Mike Renfro "TD catch" vs. the Steelers in 79 (look it up youngsters)...even worse than the tuck rule.

That said... Jim Caldwell is gutless for not going for it on 4 and 1, and the punt blew up in his face... he did not go for the win, and as a result, they lost.
