I'm sadly not surprised; I knew once they settled for FGs on those last two scoring drives that they would lose because that is what being a Lions fan means. The officiating was terrible, and it does make me seriously wonder the "great" Dallas offensive line that gets away with an incredible number of holds. I've never seen a DPI picked up, at least in recent memory, and certainly not after something so blatant. Yes, the defense and offense should have done better, but both performed adequately to win this game. I'm sure the NFL will come out with some official statement chastising the officials and all, but this team is going to be worse next year with Suh and (probably) Austin gone, and it sucks that they had a chance to at least win a playoff game and it was snatched away because the refs were either incredibly incompetent or in some way influenced by an outside force.

According to the @Adv_NFL_Stats WP calculator, the picked up flag cost the Lions 15% of win expectancy.

Is on 97.1 now saying the fix was in, it's practically anarchy in the NFL if you think about it. It looks prettty bad with Chris Christie is Jerry's box, even Strahan & Howie joked about it. Seemed rather brazen to me BTW, I'll bet the NFL Sith Masters/gestapo will get to them, heh, heh.
I really have lost a great deal of respect for the NFL, not that they have much
January 4th, 2015 at 10:57 PM ^
is everyone so shocked that Christie is fawning over Jerry Jones? That's about the only part of this crapfest that didn't shock me.

he said another official who had a better angle than the one who threw the flag called it Faceguarding, which is not illegal

Maybe the Lions still lose if the refs don't pick up the pass interference, or call the clear unsportsmanlike/sideline infraction (take your pick on Bryant) or if the call the blatant hold or tackle on Suh Dallas' last TD, or call the Suh-like stomp, but at least it woulda been fair. The refs blatantly steering the games has gotten so bad the product is unwatchable.

Hasn't the Super Bowl sucked for a long time? I mean other than the 9 hours of commercials for an already over commercialized pile of crap featuring a well known singer for the halftime show so you have something to look forward to after excessive eating and drinking for no logical reason and then oh yes there is the segment on memorable coin tosses from prior years.
SUCK IT NFL!

Just when you think those jerks can't be any worse, they dig deep and blow away your wildest expectatons.
Jim Joyce actually apologized so there is nothing to really hate on there. He was big enough to admit the mistake.
Screw the rest of them. NFL sucks, period.
January 4th, 2015 at 11:26 PM ^
Bingo. With the Joyce call, I was livid, but when he came on TV and said right into the camera "I kicked the shit out of that call," I at least retained some respect for him as a professional. With the NFL, they screw you, they know they're screwing you, and they just don't give a shit.
January 4th, 2015 at 11:45 PM ^
There is no forigiving Joyce. It wasn't just a no no...it was a perfect game. Even if he got wrong, on the good side, Cleveland would have just walkd to the dugouts. Watch his face, it said, I am going to make this call cause I'm the man, look at me.
But we shouldn't even know you're there if you're doing you're job. He and his ego asked for it. He, luckily for him, just happen to screw over the most gracious man to ever take a shaft publically.
Fuck Jim Joyce!!!

so i realize this will be an unpopular opinion, but i think the PI getting picked up simply made up for the running into the kicker earlier in the game that ended up allowing the lions to score 7 points they shouldnt have. so that couldve changed the game right there. not to mention, the lions then proceeded to run into dallas's punter and there was no call.
neither of them were really flag worthy, but if one of them got called, the other shouldve been too. consistency.
the holding calls on the lions on the Td drive were necessary. levy tackles dunbar on the screen attempt. how can that not be called?
as far as some holding on suh, probably shouldve been called a few times. but there some holding calls missed for both sides.
ok, thats my neutral opinion on the game/officiating.

Consistency does not mean that you need to assess "make up calls" to "even-out" the balance of the number of calls, etc. It means that your definition of what a a particular penalty is does not change but remains consistent. If a ref is trying to make sure he calls the same number of penalties on both teams then he won't have his job very long.
We've all seen both of these types of calls made in every NFL game - PI certainly, and running into the punter is called often. If you don't protect the punter they will get killed. About the only time they don't call roughing is if the defender is blocked into the kicker.
The unforgiveable aspect is the fact that the PI flag was picked up, with no explanation given during the game, not even until 1-2 hrs after the game was the explanation released!

It was essentially a scoring play. That call directly cost the Lions at least three points, and the absurd defensive holding call gave Dallas another 4. The officials were the difference in this game.
January 5th, 2015 at 12:06 AM ^
Bullshit. It was not a scoring play. "Essentially" means jack shit. Nobody knows what would have happened on the next play. You know who blames the refs? Losers do. Couch potatoes do. That's why Caldwell hasn't said jack. He knows the Lions screwed the pooch -- a game is 60:00 long, not just one play. The Lions blew a 14 - 0 lead; got outscored 24 - 6 the rest of the way while settling for FGs. And that last part is pure fact. "Essentially" is not fact.

Do you know who gets bent over and fucked up the ass willingly and doesn't utter a peep? It is sixty minutes long and the refs should do their job with integrity for all sixty minutes. It wasnt like it was an instantaneous decision. It was fixed and that my ulttruistic, chest thumping friend needs to be called to the carpet.
Paving the way:

January 5th, 2015 at 1:13 AM ^
If the officials had made the correct calls on that play, the Lions would have had a 1st down at the 14 yard line. Even if they gained zero yardage, that would have been a 31 yard FG, which NFL kickers convert at a rate above 90%. So like I said, it was essentially a scoring play.
You know who ignores obvious horrible calls that drastically affect the outcome of a game? Idiots. That's why Caldwell said the explanation from the officials was not good enough.
Moron.

January 5th, 2015 at 1:35 PM ^
Of course there are no guarantees...the point is that the game was about 7/8 completed and it was a critical point in the game when the Lions needed to score, eat more clock, create momentum/confidence, keep Lions defense off of the field/Cowboy's D on field, etc.
January 5th, 2015 at 4:26 PM ^
"I'm not going to sit up here and act like that was the call that made the difference in the game," Caldwell said. "We still had our chances."
"To lose it also on a somewhat controversial issue, the one thing I told them is we're not going to ever make excuses or create any crutches about wins or losses," Caldwell said Monday in his season-ending press conference. "This particular case will be no exception."Well, I guess according to the logic in here, Caldwell is an idiot and a moron too then.

I'm getting sick of watching this NFL shit! The Ford family just needs to sell the Lions and let us start from scratch with a new NFL franchise. This fucking team is cursed and the league doesn't like anything from Detroit! Refs and the League will always be anti-lion!
I'd be much happier watching Michigan win playoffs game then the watching the stupid bowl!

Without even looking at any of the other threads on the board, I'll just say Sal. Quattro is huge Detroit Lions troll. Hate this kid.
January 5th, 2015 at 5:33 AM ^
That was the worst call in the NFL playoffs since the Mike Renfro "TD catch" vs. the Steelers in 79 (look it up youngsters)...even worse than the tuck rule.
That said... Jim Caldwell is gutless for not going for it on 4 and 1, and the punt blew up in his face... he did not go for the win, and as a result, they lost.
