I thought we killed each other on the peak of Zirakzigil, yet here you are wearing white and looking stronger than ever. Eru Iluvatar always played favorites, the bastard.

Actually I'm pretty sure it was Harbaugh.

While it is true that Manwe and the other Valar sent Gandalf (and the other four Istari) to Middle Earth as part of a master plan, it was Eru himself who revived Gandalf.
From The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien (Houghton Mifflin paperback edition, 2000):
"[Gandalf] was sent by a mere prudent plan of the angelic Valar or governors; but Authority had taken up this plan and enlarged it, at the moment of its failure. 'Naked I was sent back - for a brief time, until my task is done'. Sent back by whom, and whence? Not by the 'gods' whose business is only with this embodied world and its time; for he passed 'out of thought and time'." (p. 203)
As Tolkien said in this letter, Gandalf was not sent back by "the gods" (e.g., Manwe as you suggested), rather "Authority" intervened since the Valar's plan failed. Tolkien refers to Eru as "Authority" in other letters (e.g., "Authority" is listed under "Eru" in the index), so it is clear that it was Eru who was responsible for reviving Gandalf.

So you're shocked that Gandalf is still alive, yet now you're claiming to know exactly who revived him?
I've got my eye on you, Balrog of Morgoth.

See, you wander into a thread on the coaching search and the betting odds, and you wind up in a literary discussion about the Lord of the Rings. How many blogs offer that? Upvotes all over the place for sheer audacious quirkiness.

I love the fact that you used "audacious quirkiness" to describe what goes on here! If I could live my life totally engulfed in audacious quirkiness, I would consider it a life well lived.

If you can bet on Luis Suarez biting players in the World Cup, you can bet on Michigan head coaching changes.

I think Jim may be looking for a change. He may have reached the point of getting sick of dealing with professional players. A change to Michigan will make his job fun again! So, I'm a Michigan lean!

I would imagine Jim could bet on himself. The limit is $2000, I think.
December 14th, 2014 at 2:53 AM ^
Seriously though could Jim bet on this and win guarenteed or is he not allowed?
December 14th, 2014 at 6:36 AM ^
Or he could just pick up the phone.
"Jim, yeah hi, it's Jim. I'm going to need an extra $XX,000 in this contract so I don't have to bet on myself taking the UM job on the internet."
-Well, sure, Jim. Anything we can do to facilitate a scandal-free coaching transition.
"All set? Great. See you in January."

Just the comment I'd expect from your avatar!
Kidding aside, you're generally right, but there is a public perception and PR element to this. There are some people out there who are really good at combining coupons/sales/etc. They are borderline obsessive about saving and any one of them can end up costing a grocery store, for example, thousands of dollars per month. Even though the stores in most cases reserve the right to not permit layering discounts, they usually don't. It just looks bad.
Now casinos are obviously a bit different, but my point is that it's not always in the business's interest to take their toys and go home if someone beats them at their own game. It's often in their long-term interest to be a good sport about it.
December 14th, 2014 at 8:55 AM ^
It has been almost 20 years since I worked in retail, so things could have changed a lot in that time frame. However, when I did work in that industry, coupons were mostly manufacturer/distributor based. We would take the coupons and send them to the manufacturer/distributor and they would then send a check to reimburse the store for them. Coupons were a win/win situation for both the store and the manufacturer/distributor. We sold more of their product at a discount, but still got full value and in turn bought more product from them. So for the store, it really made no diffrence if people used multiples or not.

Wonder if this has anything to do with Henson's latest report.

I saw that as well. GH just posted that a couple of hours ago. Michigan odds moved to -120 at least a couple of hours before that.
That is an interesting post by GH. If true, the narative regarding Sarah Harbaugh is a complete 180 from "she wants to remain in the Bay Area".
December 14th, 2014 at 1:21 AM ^
I think the whole "she wants to remain in the Bay Area" thing is overblown anyways. But if this is true, it pretty much eliminates the Raiders.
December 14th, 2014 at 1:33 AM ^
I imagine you could eke out a decent lifestyle around Ann Arbor with a $7 million a year salary.
December 14th, 2014 at 2:01 AM ^
Agreed, including a Gulfstream jet to shuttle them back and forth from their second home in the Bay Area.

Perhaps if you didn't use Louis XIII cognac to water your garden, or fly in a dozen hookers from papa new guineau "for sport" every weekend, you'd have enough money for a jet. I guess we all have tough decisions to make.

Sarah Harbaugh is from San Diego, Jim met her here from what I heard from folks around town.
If they were gonna have a 2nd home in California, it would be San Diego, not the friggin' bay area!

Wine and food pairings. So being by the Bay puts an hour drive from Napa and Sonoma!

I don't think you could spend 7 million a year in Ann Arbor if you tried.
