never heard of him. like the nickname though.
December 11th, 2014 at 2:32 PM ^
a really solid relief pitcher for the Reds for a few years. He was an All-Star two years ago, if I'm not mistaken.
December 11th, 2014 at 2:51 PM ^
He started last year. Was good but his success is unsustainable. I think the Tigers lost this deal.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:44 AM ^
Great nickname. He belongs in the Hall of Fame for great baseball nicknames.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:46 AM ^
bummer to lose him. Steady Eddie type of player. Simon, 33 yrs old...not sure what I think about this trade.

So is this big pasta bowl fellow going to end up long relief or is this a sign that Scherzer is a goner and the Tigers starting staff is Price, Sanchez, Verlander, the guy they just got from the Yankees and the Never Ending Pasta Bowl?
December 11th, 2014 at 1:34 PM ^
You said....
December 11th, 2014 at 1:46 PM ^
DD did flat out say the rotation is settled. It looks like they're letting Scherzer walk for sure. Presumably they made the qualifying offer necessary to get the draft pick when he signs elsewhere.
December 11th, 2014 at 1:54 PM ^
Yeah, but dont trust anything DD says. They are out on Scherzer until he signs somewhere else.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:49 PM ^
not really a ton of room for you. It's great that we could utilize his value for something. It's like popcorn in a pan, but that Crawford seemed to have some potential

I'm very underwhelmed by him, but he was much better away from homer-friendly Great American Ballpark. Has outperformed his peripherals for the past three years.
For what the Marlins are acquiring Latos, I would how much more the Tigers would have needed to give to acquire a significantly more talented pitcher.
December 11th, 2014 at 1:37 PM ^
Well Simon is cheaper and has pitched in the AL before. Its not that significant of a differnence. Both were simaler pitchers in 2014.
December 11th, 2014 at 3:09 PM ^
Latos has a career FIP of 3.41 versus Simon's 4.45, is 6 years younger, and is not a rapist.
December 11th, 2014 at 5:25 PM ^
Latos has been the better pitcher no doubt. But the Tigers would have had to given up more in prospects and spent 6 million dollars more on latos. Ill take Simon and a pen arm if they can get one, with the money they technically saved. Latos had 3.99 xFIP last year Simon was at 4.05 xFIP. Simaler Walk and K rates. Latos also has a lot more innings on his arm. And in 100 innings last year was not nearly the pitcher he was in previous.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:48 AM ^
Crawford was the 2013 1st round pick of the Tigers
Price, Verlander, Sanchez, Greene, Loebstein, Simon
I'd say the Scherzer era is probably over in Detroit
December 11th, 2014 at 11:50 AM ^
This is DD and Ilitch we're talking about. I wouldn't be surprised to see Max signed by 5PM tomorrow. Simon is likely headed to the bullpen since he flames out in the second half of seasons.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:13 PM ^
Trade for Simon, using two decent trade chips, to put him in the bullpen? Doubtful. Besides, could have traded for a more useful bullpen piece with the two the Tigers traded away.

December 11th, 2014 at 12:09 PM ^
This is a team that NEEDS to Win know, and it appears they are doing everything they can to keep the door open. I don't think they have money to sign anyone else, so acquiring a 5th starter with very little salary demands makes sense, especially if they want to pursue a middle reliever or resign Price. Suarez is replaceable and Crawford may do nothing in the majors.

December 11th, 2014 at 12:34 PM ^
I don't really like this trade either, but the Tigers do not have major-league-ready replacements in the minors. That's the problem.
December 11th, 2014 at 1:50 PM ^
If you believe any of the scouting reports, Crawford wasn't going to be anything but a back of the rotation type starter, maybe a decent reliever. But that was before his sub .300 era performance in the minors this year.
December 11th, 2014 at 3:52 PM ^
You make the most important point - why can't the Tigers sign some scrub FA pitcher with a career 4.45 FIP?
December 11th, 2014 at 11:56 AM ^
I would hate to see adulterated shit.

There was this time I was trying to make chicken salad, and all I had was chicken shit and a few other ingredients. Celery, onions, mayo, black pepper, but no chicken meat at all. The result was terrible.
True story.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:19 PM ^
Agreed DD got hosed again. Simon's 34, going to the AL, facing serious legal accusations. If they had gotten Leake that would have been fine. Plus Crawford is their best pitching prospect.
Reminds me of the Alex Gonzalez trade.
December 11th, 2014 at 11:55 AM ^
track what's going on in the minor leagues.
I love the Tigers. Always have. But last year's team was uninspiring in spite of the talent. I think it's because of the lack of home grown talent/long term familiarity with the players. Is it a crime to develop a position player?
December 11th, 2014 at 11:56 AM ^
If Simon goes to the pen, thats the only way scherzer or Jake shields are still possibilities
lester got 6 for 155, so Scherzer gonna be about that if not more.
I think I'd rather go sheilds at a cheaper cost, and work on a deal with price.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:01 PM ^
At the lower cost, maybe, just maybe they can afford to keep Price after 2015. He's only two years older than Scherzer.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:58 PM ^
i think i would have tried to get him. 4 yrs $48M. he had a great second half last year and may have figured things out. they still need a lefty reliever.
hopefully simon = juan berenguer
December 11th, 2014 at 12:00 PM ^
I like this trade. You can say they gave up a prospect, but not many prospects pan out. Simon can be a 4 or 5 starters or come out of the pen.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:11 PM ^
I agree. I spent some time looking back at first round picks in baseball awhile ago. Alot of them don't even make it to the bigs. We've been trading away prospects for 6-8 years now. I can't really think of one that I'd like to have back.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:19 PM ^
The problem isn't trading prospects, it's trading prospects for garbage. They just lost two of their only decent trading chips for a pitcher whose middling production they could get from basically anywhere else.
December 11th, 2014 at 12:48 PM ^
People keep saying you could get Simon's production from anywhere. That's wrong. You know that many teams last year sent out guys with 5+ ERAs every fifth day, right? Do you really want to play AAAA roulette with your 5th SP spot?
December 11th, 2014 at 5:41 PM ^
It was 3. You can get Simon's production off the damn scrap heap, you don't need to be trading players for it.
December 11th, 2014 at 1:27 PM ^
you realize he was an all star last year? he's not cy young but he definitely adds depth.
December 11th, 2014 at 5:38 PM ^
He was incredibly lucky over the first half of last year, he's much more the guy who had a 4.5 era in the second half of the year. That is hot ass garbage in the NL.
December 11th, 2014 at 6:11 PM ^
I'd take Andrew Miller back.
