CC: Cowherd On Coaching Change

Submitted by brewandbluesaturdays on

FWIW - Cowherd is reporting a source close to him is telling him knows who the coach will be and we will find out this weekend. He said it's someone currently coaching a team and not someone we had heard of as a serious candidate and it's not Schiano and someone we will be very happy with. He won't give the name, as to not ruin his source.

Cant rememember if it was Scout Or Rivals rumor, I beleive it was Rivals. But, they may be right.

It's Stoops, and it's dumb.

Stoops wants UM at this point way more than UM wants him.  He totally underperformed this year and feels underappreciated in Norman.

This is not happening.  Nor would it make the Michigan fan base happy.  Would be a "blah" move in the face of losing out on Harbaugh.

I would actually be curious to know why you felt this way about Stoops? If a Harbaugh or Miles is not coming here, then this really is not a bad consolation prize when it comes to resume and overall performance. I mean, I would definitely take something akin to the run Oklahoma has had under his watch if it could be replicated.

This part of the fanbase would be ecstatic with a Bob Stoops hire if Harbaugh is intent on staying in the NFL. The guy's resume is packed with BCS bowl game after bowl game with a few national title appearances to top it off. His team was pre-season top-5 and, according to you, he has underperformed.  Let's take a look at this unimpressive 2014 performance

LA Tech          W 48-16
@ Tulsa         W 52-7
Tennessee    W 34-10
@ West VA     W 45-33
@ TCU           L 33-37   (to a playoff contender)
Texas             W 31-26
K State           L 30-31 (1 point to a top-10 school)
@ IA State     W 59-14
Baylor             L 14-48  (OK...this one was bad)
@TX Tech      W 42-30
KU                   W 44-7
OK St               tbd

In this disappointing season he's sitting on an 8-3 record (likely 9-3) with two of his three losses being extremely close. A turnover here or there and this season could be 11-1 with talk of a playoff spot.

I'd take his record of sustained success over Dan Mullen any day of the week. At Michigan he'd be able to get the players he wants, he'd have access to the resources he needs to compete annually for B1G championships. That...and he has a pretty good record against his main rivals, Texas and OK State. If Hackett pulls this hire off, I'd be thrilled.

This is an extremely short-sighted comment. Bob Stoops would be a GREAT hire.

Just look at his credentials:

- 162-39 record in 16 seasons (average of 2.4 losses per season)

- 4 BCS National Championship appearances (more than any coach since the BCS started in 1998)

- Only 7 home losses TOTAL in 16 seasons

- In 2008, his team set the record for highest scoring offense in Division 1 history

- In his previous 15 seasons, he has ended a season unranked only 2 times (1999 - his first season, and 2009). He finished in the top 15 in 12 of those seasons, top 10 in 9 of those seasons, and top 6 in 8 of those seasons).

- Defensive-minded coach that runs a high-tempo, balanced offense.

Yes, this year has been a disappointment for them, but they are still 8-3 and likely to go 9-3 (facing Oklahoma St. at home). I would take 9-3 as a "disappointing" season all day long.

"He said it's someone currently coaching a team and not someone we had heard of as a serious candidate..."

Shit, around here just about every guy currently coaching a team has been a serious candidate.

But, when others talk about the Michigan blogoshere it can only mean us, right?

I thought we are the only ones that mattered to the world! MgoBlog..MgoBlog..MgoBlog!!!

Everyone must read this blog and our comments, so they must know Mullen is a hot topic. That means it HAS to be another coach.

If we really could land Bob Stoops I would LOVE IT.

The only thing the man needs is a high quality defensive coordinator and he would be set.

Oklahoma has always had pretty good quarterbacks and good running backs. Hell all of their skill positions on offense have been damn good over the years.

It's defense Bob Stoops needs help with. Get Stoops, then pay the money for the right coordinator. Like we just have been doing with Nuss & Mattison. We would be just fine.

Harbaugh

Stoops

Mullen or Miles

Take a shot with a lesser known coach... Hope not, but I don't want Shiano.

...not someone we had heard of as a serious candidate
How could this possibly be? I mean, we've had CC: posts for Snake Plisken and Pelini's cat. Who could we have missed?

So, a tier 1 candidate that is not Harbaugh or Miles that people will be happy with?  Stoops is the only name that I can think of . . . Whoelse am I missing?

Let's pretend the information is accurate. We will be hearing who our new coach is this weekend, and he is currently coaching a team. That means ... ... most likely a college coach, not an NFL coach ... somebody who is in a hell of a hurry to leave a current position or ... somebody really interested in Michigan and ... somebody who is doing a great job so far. I can't think of any big name head coaches who would be itching to leave for M, so I think it is somebody in a hell of a hurry to leave a good position. Maybe somebody in a position with rough relations with fans or the AD, or maybe somebody ready to get out of a bigger guy's shadow. This all leads me to three big names ... 1. Mark Helfrich. Who wants to have an incredibly rich alum in a position of power with hands all over the program? I've heard it said that Phil Knight is more powerful at Oregon than the AD. 2. Mike Gundy. For same reasons as above. 3. Gus Malzahn. Being in Saban's shadow is undesirable. The guy is practically the governor of the state. I'd consider leaving that shadow too. I'm sure there's plenty of other big name guys I'm not thinking of but I could see a reason for any of those three to want out.

I don't feel like doing any real work today (rainy and gloomy here in Tucson), so I'll play along.

Helfrich -- that's a new name in the hat.  Interesting.  Current players at Michigan are not quite in the Oregon mold.  But if Helfrich believes the skillset determines the offense (as Chip Kelly does), then maybe this could work?

I doubt we'd hear about this as soon as this weekend given Oregon is at present in the playoff, pending outcome of Friday night's game.

Gundy -- all I've read about him is he's dyed-in-the-wool Oklahoma boy and would stay OSU.

Malzahn -- this is a bold speculation.  Saban may be practically the governor of Alabama, but Malzahn is not far behind.  Passions run deep in Alabama, and for those who aren't 'Bama fans (and there's a lot who are not 'Bama fans), the competing passion is Auburn.

Of your three, the Helfrich name is the one that made me stop and think, "There's a name I'd not considered before."

“Brady Hoke is the right fit for Michigan,” said program icon Desmond Howard. “A lot of coaches are passionate about football. Hoke is passionate about Michigan football.”

The one thing Colin Cowherd is very much into is ratings.  He is always citing ratings and what gets him the most.  He misses Tim Tebow in the NFL more than any other human besides Tim Tebow, because he milked that cow for everything it was worth.  A rumor like this whether substantiated or not is gold for him.  He can spout this, watch his phones light up, and then laugh when nothing happens this weekend.

Cowherd's favorite trolling topics -

  • Kobe Bryant is overpaid
  • Tom Brady is better than Peyton Manning
  • Tony Romo is an elite QB
  • The B1G is terrible and the SEC is awesome

There are others he likes to use to fill time, but it's usually the same regurgitated stuff over and over with him.  There are some things he says that make me laugh, but he's a yack box that I only listen to when I want time to pass by.
