I had the privilege of living in England during my childhood in the 80s (my father was transferred there with GM). Overall, it was a great experience, but lordy to they hate Americans and Irish with passion. Wowza!
I was there in England when Maradona scored that "hand of god goal" during the Mexico '86 World Cup. Argentina eventually won. The entire UK was distraught - I was secretly laughing.
I think the Irish hate the English with more of a passion...
Undoubtedly so. It has even impacted US foreign policy(Joseph Kennedy was an infamous Anglophobe) and even saw some Irish Americans assist the IRA in acquiring weapons during the 80’s.
Yea. No doubt! The Irish really hate the British as well. I was in Ireland about 10 years ago and I ordered a black and tan drink. Oops!
But its a chicken/egg scenario. What came first? (rhetorical question that does not need an answer...unless you want to answer)
Well, England has been colonizing Ireland for 400+ years now. That came first.
England or Anglo-Norman invaded Ireland in 1169. Ireland was England’s first colony with much of the negatives that we see later being practiced in Ireland first.
Ireland is still occupied after 800 years.
Not sure what you mean by what came first but British colonialism came first. Black and tans came later but were a paramilitary group that largely terrorized the Irish.
Obligatory
General reply. I'm trying to be diplomatic. My mother is Irish almost straight from the shire. There are tons of Irish people in Chicago with very emphatic opinions about the UK. When I was there, once you moved beyond the USA/Irish hate, they were OK people. Strangely, very sheltered. My mom introduced Mexican food to our suburban London neighborhood in the 80s and it was almost a food revolution. They loved it!
The USA and its cultural "melting pot" / diversity is quite unique (because being a country of immigrants is pretty unique relative to the rest of the world). In most places, you don't have a veritable grab bag of culinary or cultural options like you do in much of the US.
Mexican food is so ubiquitous here but it's a recent novelty almost everywhere in Europe, and that's if you can find it. But in the last decade or so, there's been a rapid adoption of non-European cuisines in many larger European cities. Not sure about other continents.

I hope you didn't drink it.
They refused to serve me.
Big couple of days for either great joy or great disappointment
The Queen can kiss my big red, white, blue ass!
That may very well be the most watched soccer game in the United States in US Soccer History
Will need to top 26.92M for 2015 WWC USA vs Japan final. (Source: Philly Inquirer)
If the 2014 match v Portugal is just behind that one, I would think it should surpass it.
Interesting that the men's WC Final matches had steadily increasing viewership from 2006 to 2010 to 2014 and then dipped way back down for 2018. Wonder if that was solely because the US wasn't involved in the tournament at all or if some other factors were at play.
Two factors: Game started at 11 in the morning Eastern time, 8 in the West. That's not exactly prime American sports watching time. Croatia didn't exactly move the needle for most people.
Would guess time zone was biggest factor.
Awww, yeah! Don't shoot til you see the whites of the goalies eyes!
I can picture it now....
A few minutes later they shoot arrows at the Scottish and one of them gets hit in the ass.
I have never been able to figure out why that guy STILL had his ass out long after they knew arrows were incoming.
This might be my favorite headline ever:
"USMNT Want to Emulate England's Success"
England? Success? The US wants to go half a century without winning anything?
Who wrote that?
One of my favorite WC stats: the US has as many top 3 finishes in the World Cup as England. US was 3rd in 1930. England won it in 1966.
It was ESPN's summary of a Berhalter interview.
The US has won as many European championships as England has, too.
