It sucks, but after his success this past year, I doubted he would be here more than another year or two before moving on. If Michigan is going to have to replace most of the defense next year, the setback of having a to hire a new defensive coordinator for the second year in a row may not sting as much.

One team plays Saturdays, the other Sundays.  I don’t see how this is an issue.  “I’ve got my Tuesday softball league and then I play on Thursdays over in Sherman Oaks.”

Alot of "why would John do this" talk

Maybe it's about Mike..and Mike prefers the NFL and will inevitably leave as soon as he gets an NFL offer..so John might as well bring him there.

Just because we always feel that the world sucks for michigan fans.

Our bball team sucks ass for 2 months and our FB team does something it hasnt done in a while and ever and gives us complete joy.

Then our hockey team and bball team perk up, and our football team loses our DC - arguably the biggest piece to the change last season.

If we beat NW and msu in bball this weekend???  hold on to your nuts. Schlissel will come back and the fb program will be shut down.

Okay, done bitching. but i reserve the right to continue at any point.

Let's face it.  Michigan is not a destination job (in todays football and going forward) unless you are a Michigan man.  Michigan is one of the most difficult places to recruit elite athletes.  The administration doesn't fully support football.  They make it too difficult to admit high schoolers and transfers.  The elites in athletic administration won't pay coaches comparable to the SEC.  They also won't fully dive into NIL.  The Michigan name could easily be a top five NIL.  The marxist elites are stuck in their ivory towers holding back Michigan football from greatness.  Before you bash me, I'm a Michigan lifer.

If the NFL is his goal this is the time.  It will obviously take a little time to replace all those studs they are losing on defense.  So he probably has better hand now than he will next January.

Does the Mike Elston hire have any connection? Is he a candidate for Michigan's DC now, and did he know this move was coming when he joined the staff? Or did he just walk into an odd situation unknowingly? I know this stuff happens in sports, just odd with some of the relationships involved in this one.

Thanks coach! I'll always remember the embrace with JH and seeing you say " We did it". Tho it was short term, these things happen when teams are successful. good luck Mike, you gained a fan in me.

I liked MacDonald.  Bummer.  A little consistency would be nice.  I get it.  People feared that Gattis would be lured away for a HC position.  MacDonald has an opportunity to climb the ladder.  He's got to take it, no doubt. But, Holy Hell, can we just have nice things for more than a year?

I wonder if Harbaugh will just promote the new ND DL coach to DC and then hire a new DL coach? I'm not sure who Harbaugh could get and Elston  has always wanted to be a DC.

I'm sick of vertical aspiration.  Everyone moving up, or trying to move up.  Be a kickass D coordinator and build something awesome with the legend that hired you.  Then maybe after 10 years and a solid reign of winning, go become a head coach.

Under Harbaugh there have been very good to excellent defenses consistently except for the COVID ruined year. It was a fresh start as much as anything MacDonald did that was needed. Harbaugh will attract comparable talent. The true losses are the all-conference ends, LB, and defensive backs who are going to be NFL draft picks.

In the big picture the perception of Michigan as a coaching incubator is more important than any individual departure. Few coaches can draw in coaching talent like this. It’s Harbaugh who is not replaceable.

The college football experiences and expectations I grew up with are long gone. With transfer portal volatility, NIL opportunities (read: corruption) and coaching/coordinator musical chairs, it's becoming more and more difficult to enjoy the sport.

But I'm old, so what do I know?
