JD Johnson moves up to 4*
Title says it all. JD Johnson now a 4* QB. Just outside the top 300 on the composite, now the #12 pro style QB. The big jump is due to the fact that Rivals now has him #138 in the country, 247 has him #702 still.

Looks like another “under the radar” recruit that Michigan pounces on early, only to see him skyrocket up the rankings.

Now that's what I'm talking about!

What? Pep's gone???

February 20th, 2019 at 9:30 PM ^
It sort of got buried by the news of Keith Jackson's passing.
February 20th, 2019 at 8:15 PM ^
Maizennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn?
February 21st, 2019 at 9:39 AM ^
He started off as a 3*, ergo he still sucks and we are under-recruiting. Alabama doesnt have to recruit guys that rise in the rankings. They just pick the 5* guys right out of the womb. (did i do good??)
February 23rd, 2019 at 5:22 PM ^
Yes on the messaging but you were not quite insulting enough to pull it off.
February 20th, 2019 at 8:16 PM ^
I was confused as to why he was offered until I realized who he had been sitting behind and ultimately replaced. Without even a full season, he threw for 2k with 17 TD to 7 INTs.
February 20th, 2019 at 8:47 PM ^
Glad he got a bump and love that scouts are improving on him but, 17/7 TD/INT ratio isn’t the best for a high school prospect and if he was the backup he might have been going up against 2nd string or lesser opponents that were being blown out. Did Rattler get injured during the season? That’s a lot of playing time for a backup.
Edit: Take back my statements, getting thrust into the starting role unexpectedly while getting backup reps to a 5 Star. Those numbers aren’t too shabby!
February 20th, 2019 at 8:50 PM ^
Rattler was ruled ineligible for an unspecified code of conduct violation.
February 20th, 2019 at 8:58 PM ^
That’s right, yikes. So Johnson was playing the latter part of the season against arguably better competition (conference)? I guess those numbers aren’t too bad if you’ve been getting backup reps and just thrown into the fire.
February 20th, 2019 at 8:51 PM ^
The 5* starter got hurt and Johnson went up against starters.
February 20th, 2019 at 9:02 PM ^
Not to mention, he's pretty mobile for a pro-style guy. Maybe not "speed in space" but certainly a good facilitator.
February 20th, 2019 at 8:51 PM ^
Don’t base your confusion on ranking. The staff evaluates players on their own, independent of what the rankings say. The staff evaluates a player, and if they like what they see, they offer. Which (much like this past class) you saw a bunch of the guys make big leaps up the rankings as the process went on, well after Michigan evuated, offered, and received a commitment from the player.
Naturally, many on the board threw a temper tantrum at certain lower ranked players being offered and accepted. Only to find out the staff knows what they are doing and were well ahead of the recruiting sites.

In the second paragraph, instead of "many" I would use "some active posters".
February 21st, 2019 at 7:31 PM ^
Yeah, I guess “some vocal posters” would have sufficed
February 20th, 2019 at 8:24 PM ^
Early hei2man candidate!
February 20th, 2019 at 8:26 PM ^
I like this kid so much better today than I did yesterday.
February 20th, 2019 at 8:57 PM ^
I’m with you here. I mean yesterday I was all like :/ but today I’m all like fuck yeah
February 20th, 2019 at 9:35 PM ^
Great, now I have the Spiral Starecase song in my head. Thanks.
February 20th, 2019 at 8:39 PM ^
And we know this player actually exists? Sorry...gotta double check these days.

The Coaching Staff Seems To Know What They're Doing After All

Well, except against OSU
February 20th, 2019 at 11:27 PM ^
Nyet Tovarich o maroon not red, they KNOW what they are doing is losing but they cannot AFFORD to compete.
So they hope the spark of enlightenment from "undeserved" rewards to places that expand perspective rather than anabolic count might show young men a less CTE way of life .......
Plus Hagerman* was right tohu wa bohu in @25
*(I mean Fr Follen was right!, Hagerman was just a physics teacher, my bad, vectors man)
February 20th, 2019 at 9:03 PM ^
The make believe recruit that got rated s 3* should tell you all you need to know about the rankings. The top 100 get personally scouted by the services but the rest is based quite heavily on what offers they get.
February 20th, 2019 at 10:06 PM ^
He'll hit the camps this Spring/Summer and get ranked accordingly. But I agree, right now this is all guesswork.
February 20th, 2019 at 10:57 PM ^
You're mistaking mid-cycle rankings for final. The fake kid would have been exposed before final rankings came out.
February 21st, 2019 at 12:37 AM ^
Just like manti's girlfriend.
February 20th, 2019 at 9:07 PM ^
No way he stays at 700 on 247, he will pop this summer at the Opening- end up as a top 150 overall and top 10 QB.
I literally had a screaming match with Maizen or one of his star-gazing minions when JD committed - the idiot poster couldn’t comprehend that this kid’s rating was being held back by being Rattler’s backup and that he would pop once he starting getting exposure.
February 20th, 2019 at 9:09 PM ^
I doubt he stays in the 700’s too, it was just as a point of reference as to where he was thought to be before
February 20th, 2019 at 10:57 PM ^
Yeah the main reasoning was "DTR was a 4* while sitting behind Martell, so JDJ should be at least a 4* as a backup to Rattler if he's any good."
The problem with that, as I pointed out, is that DTR had 8 receiving TDs and 6 rushing TDs as a starting WR while "sitting" behind Martell.
February 21st, 2019 at 2:33 AM ^
Gotta love folks who can point one example and make it a rule across thousands of other people.
yeah, DTR is a great athlete who could have probably been a 4 star at multiple positions at a highly visible “national HS football program”. Does that mean every QB that happens to backup a 5 star needs to be DTR in order to excel?
Of course, we have yet to see DTR actually excel at QB in college- so that is still up in the air.
February 21st, 2019 at 8:03 AM ^
Where did this literal screaming match take place? Did you call him up on the phone? Meet him on the playground?
February 21st, 2019 at 8:32 AM ^
Under the highway. Jets vs. Sharks. No knives, no guns, just lungs.
February 20th, 2019 at 9:24 PM ^
247 is updating their 2020 class I think next week so he’ll likely move up again.
February 20th, 2019 at 9:28 PM ^
I don't care what he's rated, this kid looks like a natural (I get it, it's a highlight video). Fluid, smooth, quick release. Didn't really see a weakness in his Hudl.
February 21st, 2019 at 6:15 AM ^
Personally, I don’t care what he’s rated either. The staff wants him, which is good enough for me.
This was more a shot at the sect of the fan base who were bitching about Michigan taking a 3* QB, only to watch yet another recruit shoot up the rankings.
February 20th, 2019 at 11:51 PM ^
Harbaugh seems to be really good at two things in particular. Identifying talented coaches, and evaluating players. He just hits and hits and hits on both.
February 21st, 2019 at 8:02 AM ^
I don't think this is necessarily conclusive evidence.
It might also mean that Rivals found he got an offer from and committed to Michigan, and...poof...let's make the guy a 4-star!
February 21st, 2019 at 9:30 AM ^
at the least 'trending correlative' evidence?
do you think JH seems to be hitting coaching and recruiting targets more often than not?
February 21st, 2019 at 12:16 PM ^
Harbaugh has been great with coaches, and much better than average with recruits (just IMO). It's harder to trend players due to development, injuries, and screwing around in college.
February 21st, 2019 at 12:14 PM ^
This particular guy is definitely not proof. However, Harbaugh is the best coach I've ever seen at plucking "who dat" guys out of nowhere. Of course, RCMB claims that Michigan recruits get overrated and theirs underrated, but Harbaugh has a long track record (going to Stanford's 2 star mafia) of finding off the radar guys who prove out.
February 21st, 2019 at 8:00 AM ^
Wait...so J.D. Johnson is good now? Cool.
February 21st, 2019 at 9:17 AM ^
But we say 247 is the best at rankings prospects, and they're the lowest on him, so idk what to believe.
February 21st, 2019 at 11:22 AM ^
So maybe he's not good? Yeesh... Today has been such a roller coaster, and it's not even noon yet.
February 21st, 2019 at 12:52 PM ^
same service that ranked fake players right?
