Charles Matthews Buzzer Beater POSBANG

On a mid range shot no less. This game was weird as hell but hopefully it propels Matthews going forward.

GO BLUE! BEAT INDIANA!

Seemed a little like GRIII against Purdue.

I'll take the win.  This team needs a couple of these to learn to win tough, close, and ugly.  And Minn is as anti-Mich as it gets - it's why we struggle against them.

Hopefully we find our groove now.

Bang.

Good result. When you're in a mid-season swoon and the coach is trying to reshape the entire offense (he's been talking about it for weeks, he really wants the team to play differently than it is) it's nice to get a win like this.

Still would be nice to do better, but presumably that can come if the offense can get its act together and actually make the plays that Beilein wants it to make.

I think Michigan managed to mug teams early in the year with talent and some good shooting performances and a lack of scouting (specifically on Iggy, who almost never passes once he's committed) and of course suffocating defense, but Beilein is unwilling to just keep playing that way and has purposefully tried to retrain the offense into his preferred system. We're going to have some more games like this and some more losses.

And if Beilein can get it right, the team will be ready to win games in March and April.

He's obviously not lost. But he is trying to reformulate his game a bit. There were a couple of drives where it looked like he had space to lay the ball in and instead did his usual hard-stop/pivot/fadeaway move. It's a decent late-clock move when there's not much available, but he was passing up opportunities to go all the way to the basket at times.

Both he and Iggy are ball-stoppers and that's not a Beilein style. I think Beilein is riding them hard to play differently, and I think that's part of the reason things seem so juddered on offense at times.

playing Minnesota sucks, bunch of out of control guys barreling towards the basket getting bailed out by the refs. Minnesota and Wisconsin deserve each other.

Charles in charge!

Ugly win, but a win nonetheless.  Tough test at IU this weekend, need to clean up the offense.  We seem to be playing a lot of ISOball right now, Beilein said it best in the postgamer (paraphrasing here) need to find the open man and not shoot over defenders so frequently.

I'm just amazed that it took the announcers nearly 5 minutes to realize the refs were checking for a shot clock violation and not looking at the game clock. At least somebody finally tipped off Kugler in his headset

Edit: by haters I mean posters on this here blog who are so mad about our performance when down 9 in the first half. I get it UW as disappointing. I had bad feels too. But this team (especially Teske) is very good.

After watching this team play offense the last month and a half people have a right to be concerned. Reminds me of MSU a bit last year who got some nice early wins and piled up a gaudy record but you could tell that team never figured out its problems going into March.

Izzo is Mr. January-- in the past few years his teams seemed to have disappeared down the stretch.  Beilein on the other hand, has a reputation for getting his teams ready to go for a post-season run.  Surely Coach B has earned the benefit of the doubt around here...

I will say, I celebrated that shot. I even spilled a little wine in the process.

Still, the middle of the Big Ten schedule being National Drinking Month is going to be the end of me at this rate.

Great shot to win, bad offense for the last couple of minutes.  It's a win, but this team is scuttling offensively.  I have faith it'll remedy itself, but right now this team is a step behind MSU and the other top teams in the country.

Last year we went to MSU and I thought we had zero chance, probably even to be competitive. But it turned out I was wrong. I wonder if the team is in a similar mid-season situation this year, where the light goes on as the key challenges ramp up.

Granted, it might take a stretch of games where the team is something like 3-4 to get there. That would be ugly.

I don't disagree, but this team doesn't have that one definite offensive mismatch they had last year with Mo (and to a lesser extent Robinson).  Teske weirdly is probably their most consistent offensive player these past half-dozen games, and his outside shot is emerging, but he's probably not a big you can run your offense through to the same degree.

They really need Iggy to get back to where he was earlier in the year.  That may mean giving him some rest, lowering his usage so he can be more effective in spurts, something.  But Poole and Matthews feel like known commodities, and this offense needs that third guy who can take the ball with 10 seconds left and generate offense.

All that said, the defense has been consistently solid and that doesn't seem to be stopping.  So while their offense could well play like a 3-4 stretch, their defense will probably stop that from happening.

And to be frank, I don't really care about regular season titles.  It's nice, don't get me wrong, but college basketball has such a clear metric by which to measure a successful season, and it's so (relatively) open, that I'd rather a team get to the final four than hang a regular-season title after bowing out in the first round.

I like it all - regular season, B1G tournament, and NCAA.

We're really fortunate that coach Beilein is such a great tournament coach; I remember back in the day when we had tremendous teams that often seemed to underperform in the tournament - single elimination tournaments can be brutal (just ask any Spartan or UVA fan).

While I agree we don't have a sure-fire offensive go-to guy, I'm not so sure we did last year either. Both Robinson and Wagner had some brutal stretches last year (and boy, did people here complain about it).

This year's team doesn't have the 3-pt shooting skill of many previous Beilein teams, but they do have a fair number of scoring threats, and terrific defense. I really think we're just going through a tough stretch right now, and will get our groove back as tournament time nears.

Iggy is a big key, as is Poole. They're the guys with the real scoring skill and aggressiveness.

We've still lost only one game - without question, it's been a great season so far!

At least they won. Good teams play like shit sometimes, but still win. The BB team isn't as much fun to watch these days.

Lots of little things the team can work on. It's only January, there's a ton of time to make adjustments. I really do think Iggy would benefit from staying one more year. I don't think he is NBA ready.
