Charles Matthews Buzzer Beater POSBANG

On a mid range shot no less. This game was weird as hell but hopefully it propels Matthews going forward.

Feels like Iggy is working through 2 challenges - freshman "wall", and opposing teams having plenty of film on him.

Coach Beilein will help him adjust his game, and he'll come through this a better player.

I do agree he could use another year; there's still a lot of time before the tournament, but his game has gaping holes. He needs to become much more aware of his teammates, and learn to move more effectively without the ball.

He's a terrific player; to me it's a good thing that he still has room to grow.

The main issue that I have noticed is when he drives the ball into the lane he does not kick the ball out to the perimeter to open players. I am sure its a mix of teams having film on him as well as things he needs to improve on himself. I can see him being in the same scenario as Burke when he was a freshman. If he has a bad tournament he will definitely come back

When Teske went out with the bloody nose the whole game turned.  He is the MVP of this team.  Poole can’t make anything, he even is missing his free throws now.

In the post earlier this week about who the most important is, I argued that it's Z, and I stick to that.  Mostly because he sets the defensive tone and that he plays a lot more minutes than Teske and hence is a more consistent contributor.

But I think Teske is easily the best player on the team right now.  I'm not really sure he has a weakness at the college level.  The guy is just playing out of his mind.

Iggy appeared to the best player early in the season but he's come down to earth as Big Ten coaches have figured some things out about him.

Matthews just isn't an efficient enough offensive player to be considered the best.

And Poole could/should be the best but he's too streaky still, he falls asleep on defense, and he's a bad decision maker.  Poole is a lot like sophomore Wagner.  Flashes of brilliance but oh-so-frustrating.

Hopefully this win ends the funk.  Thought the grit in 2nd half was good. Winner at the buzzer can be a positive wake up call.

I'll be honest - I don't necessarily love the idea of Nike making a bunch of commemorative shirts for MLK remembrance because I think his message should be above that level of commercialization, but a Spartan fan complaining about someone not being respectful when MSU played on a fucking air craft carrier in camo uniforms is the height of irony.

Wait, how is the latter disrespectful? I also think the former is not a big deal either. But I'm curious about the air craft carrier game because I actually thought that was pretty cool. Obama was there too.

I just find it hard to say that was disrespectful when I am sure they had to go through the Navy to even pull that off.

Throughout the season I was always hoping the bench would develop more through increased playing time in easier games. Johns is getting some minor minutes, but not enough to be dependable. I think we really need a shooter off the bench (DeJulius?) to come and get points quickly when Poole is resting.

I think we need a deeper bench to make it through the rest of the season and March Madness.

None of our bench guys are plus players on offense (Duncan Robinson is the contrast after his “demotion” last year) though if Livers is playing optimal basketball he can supply 3-point shooting.

But Teske is the issue here. Z or Iggy or Poole or Matthews, taken individually, can be compensated for. If a slasher is sitting another is on the floor.

But the team just isn’t the same without Teske. That’s a pretty perilous place to be in.

On "The Moving Screen" pod, they we're talking about Michigan running into teams that are at a season crossroads. IU, just losing to NU, will need to pick it up to make the tourney or to feel remotely positive about this season. So it's good that IU is playing poorly, but also slightly bad for us because they NEED this win against us.

Eh, not really. Yeah, they just loss, but Minny also just lost by 30 to Illinois.

Road games are hard, and IU is more talented than Minny. IU also hung around against us after that initial massive blow.

I think we win, but the effort needs to be way better than tonight

It was absolutely a mediocre performance by Michigan.  At the same time, Minnesota was, at best, nominally response for Michigan going 3-22 from 3 and, say, Poole missing a pair of free throws late.

Michigan is playing ugly, but some of that was just bad luck.

Save your breath.  This blog tends to be littered with people who cannot grasp the concept that 3-22 from three is anything except poor execution and maybe good defense by the opposition.

I mean, you're right: with normal three-point luck, this is a comfortable win.  But...

Minnesota beat Wisconsin at the Trohl.

B1G games are tough, and teams have good and bad games. This wasn't one of Michigan's best performances, but they played hard and won.

IMO we SHOULD beat a crappy non-conference team comfortably; any win in conference is a good win, large margin or not. I really don't understand complaining after a win against a pretty good team.

When Michigan plays well, they blow even good teams out.

When they aren't playing well on offense, it becomes a slog. Our D will squeeze out wins in a good number of slogs. They're just not deep or consistent enough on offense to dominate every game - but no one does.

This was a game of conscious vs subconscious play. Minnesota plays with very little “conscious” play. They’re just taking what’s there and going 100 mph. When Michigan was thinking too much and playing too deliberate, they got in trouble. Iggy started just balling and beating Minnesota at their own game. Too much deliberation in a game like this can cause bad rhythm and loss of confidence. But we’ve seen it before and they’ll work it out.

Hitting the winner had to feel good for a struggling Matthews.  Don't think it will miraculously improve his play going forward but any additional confidence can't hurt.  I think come tournament time, Teske and X will give their usual 110%.  If Iggy and Poole play decent and Matthews doesn't hurt us, it should be a decent March.  Waiting for Livers to step up more consistently.  Still love this team overall.

GO BLUE!!
