I’d put I as their third-best album, after 4 and Houses of the Holy and right ahead of II and Physical Grafitti.

Favorite LZ LP was „In Through the Out Door“—if you wiped the inside jacket with a damp cloth the black and white picture of a cocktail table setting would turn into color: green olive in the glass, etc.  pretty innovative for that time.

Wonder if any of the "more seasoned" members on this blog ever saw them in concert?

Saw Robert Plant in concert, and Page and Plant about 25 years ago, but was too young to have seen the band in all their glory.

Stupid parents....

Bonzo is still every bit as revered as a drummer that Paige ever was on the lead guitar.  Same with John Paul Jones (base), and the entire world celebrates Robert Plant's lyrical stylings.  Think about this:  Eric Clapton said no thanks when Cream evolved into LZ.  That's some shit, man!!

Closest I came to seeing Led Zeppelin in concert was seeing their movie "The Song Remains the Same" on the big screen at a theater back in the mid 70's.  Sat up front and was totally immersed in the movie to the extent that it seemed almost like being at a concert.

Otherwise, saw Page and Plant in Chicago in the mid 90s and Robert Plant in GR as the opening act for The Who, I think it may have been in 2001?

I mean you're splitting hairs figuring out which album is better, they had so many great ones.

Greatest band ever indeed and my all time favorite!

Floyd, Santana, the Doors round out my top 4

A glorious day indeed.  Zeppelin were like a fast and agile freight train.  Essentially perfect in many ways and clearly inimitable.

IMO (in case anyone gives a shit):

* IV is overrated.

* In IV's list of tracks, Black Dog is overrated.

* I think the MMB should play something other than Black Dog.

* Living Loving Maid is a much worse song than Heartbreaker. I used to hate when it invariably followed the latter on radio playlists.

* Zeppelin's live songs are way better than the studio versions.

I used to think this was only about their 4th or 5th best album, but as the years have passed it has aged so very well.

Here's my LZ top 6 right now:

6) II

5) III

4) Houses of the Holy

3) Physical Graffiti

2) Led Zeppelin l

1) IV

The difference?  Jimmy Page's guitar licks on LedZep I are just so very addicting to listen to and when blended with Robert Plant's voice it's the perfect blend of blues and hard rock.

II, OTOH, other than Whole Lotta Love just doesn't measure up as an album like any that I have ranked higher on my list.  While WLL is one of my top 3 individual LZ songs, the rest of the album just seems to drag on and on when I listen now.

At first glance, II that low seems pretty crazy IMO.  But then I see every other album listed and I can see why someone would prefer them.  Personally, I'd put II higher (I love Ramble On and WIAWHNB) and drop House down a bit.  Other than OTHAFA and Rain Song there isn't a ton on that one that I get really fired up about.

IMO, Heart Breaker is one of their best songs and that is on II, so I rank II high. For some reason Physical Graffiti never got as much radio play. I rarely heard "In My Time of Dying" played on the radio in the mid 70s, may be it was too long. The Rover and Ten Years Gone got some play time. Kashmir was played way too much!

I rarely listen to the radio but when they play led, I switch the station.  Personal conflict with an ex of my friend.  So now I just can't listen to them.  I'd go deeper but trust me.  I tell no lies.

Subjective truths are preferential and probably shouldn’t be met with scorn. Like wearing a favorite shirt and someone saying, “that sucks!”

“Maybe to you, but I like it.”

I think the Stones & Beatles suck. I don’t like their stuff. Zepp? Meh.

But still fun to discuss

Certainly, LZ was one of the great bands, but best ever?  No, not really.  Most overplayed on the radio?  I'd vote yes on that one.  I can't listen to most of their songs just because I'm so tired of listening to them.  Stairway to Heaven however, is an exception.  I never seem to get tired of it.  I think it's easily one of the iconic songs of rock and roll history.

I don't think there is a good way to measure 'best'. Hardly anyone can be unbiased towards other musical styles and time periods, especially if they did not experience them. For example, what if you were asked who was the better musical group,  the Bee Gees or Led Zepplin? You'd get people in every camp with that question, each camp confident the others are wrong.

LZ was my favorite band when I was a kid. Dazed and confused is my favorite song from this album. LZII is my favorite album. PG is pretty good. I liked songs from all their albums. They were my gateway band into harder rock during the 80s, Maiden, Metallica and Slayer.

While driving down to Chicago today I was listening to wxrt and the DJ played his original vinyl copy of Led Zeppelin 1. The weather and the roads sucked, but the music was the toppest of notch!

Discussion Topic: "Best songs to play on the car stereo while driving with the windows down on a warm summer night."

One Suggestion: "Kashmir"

One of the best debut tracks (Good Times, Bad Times) on a debut album. I remember hearing it when it first came out and thinking I had been missing this musical edge since Cream broke up.

Best Ever!

I still remember when I wss 15 riding in the back of my older brothers car and I first heard Kashmir.  And for the first and last time I had to ask “What song is that?”.  From then on I discovered all their albums and songs.

Since then listened to all kinds of music but every so often I rediscover Zeppelin.

Their best are their blues songs.

I just bought a guitar last month to learn The Rain Song.

I had a beer with Robert Plant after a Page Plant show in 95.  Great guy, very personable, affable and friendly, yet still carried that "British Rock Star" vibe well.

Still one of my favorite bands. Led zeppelin I is one of the all time great debut albums. I don't listen to them as often as when I was a teenager, but I still crank it up when they come on. My kids love the immigrant thanks to the new thor movie, I've been trying to leverage that into more dad music on the radio in the car.
