Dax would've looked really good in the winged helmet.  And he would've walked on water at Michigan.  Now he's assimilated into the Alabama Borg.  Another 5-star clone in a non-descript crimson helmet.  If it wasn't for bad luck we'd have no luck at all.

Harbaugh is toast. Will lose to OSU at home with first year coach Day and then limp back to the NFL. What a joke.

We’ll see how the coaching staff handles this.  This could be the beginning of more decommits and recruits going elsewhere as the cycle ends.  Even more pressure than usual is on them to finish this class in a positive way.  Everybody hold on!

Not surprised.  CFB is dirty.  Anyone who does not see this is choosing to be blind about it.

Bama has 22 4/5 stars.  Only one 3 star (a kicker).  Bama might end up with the best recruiting class of all time.

Saban clearly is one of the all time great CFB coaches.

Still, the recruiting run Alabama is on logically cannot only be the result of Alabama winning a lot and 4/5 stars wanting to play for a winner.

Sure that is a big part of it.  But it is obvious that a system of institutionalized 'extra benefits' are an integral and necessary ingredient too.  Do yourself a favor and Google "Alabama football players' cars."   Tip of the iceberg.

Problem is that some level of extra benefits exist at all major programs, including Michigan, just in much smaller amounts and in a much less institutionalized way (less directed by and/or directly connected to the program).  Thus, it becomes impossible for anyone to rat out the most dirty programs.

Everybody involved in the system knows what is going on.  But because no program is totally clean (couldn't be even if they wanted to), omerta prevents reporting on the Alabamas of the world.

Plus, the NCAA does not want to damage its most valuable brands with vigorous investigation of illegal benefits, so it pretends not to know.

Michigan is sort of stuck.  Can't be totally clean, otherwise they would not be able to compete at all in recruiting.  Yet Michigan is not a place that is willing go to the full on Alabama level of institutionalized 'taking care of guys' either, so it will lose out to Bama (or even Ole Miss, etc.) on the key recruits that could get the program to the very top level.

Illegal benefits are everywhere in CFB.  Alabama (and some others) are just more willing to perfect that part of it than Michigan.  And the NCAA is not going to lift a finger to fix it.

It is what it is.  And it makes the whole 'stretch gate' thing seem silly, doesn't it?

Sparty Doesn't Know

December 8th, 2018 at 9:19 PM ^

The problem is all of these 4/5 star kids that choose to ride the pine for 3 years at Alabama when they would be 3 year starters and superstars at other schools.  No kid that has the drive to be that good chooses the bench over starting unless something "very compelling" comes along with being a backup.

Well, I was just about to decide to go "all in" on college football and start watching something other than Michigan.  Not now, i'll support our boys and continue to ignore the rest.

Alabama is like Lance Armstrong.  It's so obvious that bullshit is going on it isn't even funny.  But Saint Nick and Father Dabo can do no wrong.  I am sure Paowl Feianbaowm will tell all of us that everything is as it should be.

Ghost of Fritz…

December 8th, 2018 at 9:28 PM ^

The parallel with Lance Armstrong is correct.

Most of the pros were using some sort of banned substances at least some of the time.  But Armstrong and his team were just more professional and organized about it than most of the other teams.

Like Alabama, Armstrong was also just naturally very, very good to start with.  But being among the better and most organized about PEDs pushed him to the very top level.

And there were lots of riders who did not want to use PEDs, but simply had to do it just be be able to get and keep their pro contracts.  It was dope at least some, or go home.

This has shit to do with $$$

this has to do with Michigan being what .... 0-infinity vs OSU?  You want to play the best football and win conference titles  and play for the national title?  You go to Bama.  Our #1 defense got shit on by a power offense on national TV.  Bama has won what ... 5 titles in 9 years?  If you want to win all the football you go to Bama.

I love Michigan but I had an opportunity to go to a better school.  So I did despite my love for M.  If I was a 5 star and my main goal was to win football games, I’d go to Bama/Clemson over M too, regardless of how much I loved M.

Saban manipulates these kids every year into making Harbaugh think he has a highly rated/ wanted kid and then... "surprise" kid chooses Bama. That means Harbaugh can't recruit other (maybe slightly lower ranked) kids and scares off others.

Then, boom... 2 weeks before signing day and... kid flips to Bama, as a complete surprise. scramble for Harbaugh.

Dax could have told M sooner, he could have not poisoned other recruits.

This greatly angers me. Yeah I agree on Daxton too. That's a jackass move by that kid. Not very sharp. Don't give me that shit that he's still in high school and not an adult yet. I understand if the kid is 12 years old maybe. From this day forward I now curse Alabama. I wish every failure towards that program along with buckeye nation. Urban is gone. Saban be next. So let it be written, so let it done. Michigan once again, will be the one. Burn both of those fuckers to the ground.

One big advantage an NFL head coaching job has over a college job is that the acquisition of talent is conducted on a level playing field. As much as this kid’s decision is bothering fans, I’d imagine that it frustrates Harbaugh even more.

Ghost of Fritz…

December 8th, 2018 at 9:44 PM ^

Not that simple.  The majority of the NFL owners are idiots.  Unless you have one of the better owners, it can be an even bigger headache.

In reality, the HC at Michigan has an easier path to talent acquisition than most NFL HCs.

Michigan has a lot of advantages in recruiting.  Only a bad recruiter would consistently fall below top 15 in recruiting at Michigan.

Sure Michigan is going to lose high 4 and 5 stars to certain schools (as we see today).  But it is still one of the easier places to get a top 10 class, even if top 5 classes will be more challenging.

The Oracle 2

December 9th, 2018 at 2:02 AM ^

Not true at all. There are no Alabamas in the NFL; the draft applies equally to everyone. It comes down to the ability of the individuals involved to make the right choices. I don’t think Harbaugh is leaving, but if he did he’d be able to negotiate himself a great deal of power over determining his own destiny. There are obviously other factors that make his Michigan job more appealing, but not when it comes to acquiring the best talent.

Ghost of Fritz…

December 9th, 2018 at 9:48 AM ^

Right, but there is only one Alabama in CFB.

There are still only 10-12 schools max that have an easier path to 'talent acquisition' than Michigan.  The fact that Michigan is not one of the top 5 places in this regard does not make it some sort of negative for JH staying at Michigan versus bolting to the NFL.

And even if JH were to get himself one of the better NFL jobs (great owners and great GM) the NFL is set up to generate parity by spreading around talent as evenly as possible.  Literally built into the business model.

The SEC bagmen are definitely a factor

Remember Otis Reese flipping late last year? Yeah well a picture came out shortly after of him and who I assume to be his girlfriend posing in front of a brand new Cadillac Escalade. The kicker is the Escalade had a window decal of his number on it in Georgia colors so it was without a doubt his SUV.

And Nick Saban owns fucking Mercedes Car dealerships and pictures come out all the time of his 5 stars owning vehicles that middle class families would struggle to afford. Beyond obvious whats going on there

If the NCAA isn't going to do anything about the paying of recruits then Michigan needs to go ALL IN dropping bags. Forget your bullshit moral superiority. All the top programs are buying the best classes annually. Why aren't we doing it

I don’t think we should blame bag men when someone picks Bama a day after the top college awards were given out and Alabama had a finalist in almost every single category.

When Harrison announces his commitment to Michigan, and he will commit to Michigan, should we celebrate that our bag men finally showed up or will we tell ourselves he’s the one five star that wasn’t for sale?

LOL.. this is why everything that is said in the recruiting business is bullshit.  Did any of the “insiders” see this coming?  I was lead to believe that this kid was “different”, and all that shit.  Best of luck to the kid, I guess.  This is frustrating, because there’s no new information for him really now than when he committed.  We had a good, not elite, program at that time.  Alabama had an elite program at that time.  Focus on the OSU defensive performance all you want, but this defense had been prone to at least one “WTF? Outing” per year.

I honesty can’t invest much into this type of stuff anymore.  It’s bad for my health.

I guess the Spring Break trips Dax would have taken to South Africa, Antarctica and the Moon weren't enough to make up for the 62 point depantsing in The Game.

Harbaugh did everything backwards. . .the trips, the signing with the stars, the satellite camps, the vanity project picture books, all the bling. . .win something first, then do all that.  As it is, Harbaugh looks like some has-been celebrity who pays the paparazzi to keep him in the headlines.  Frankly, he's been an embarrassment. . .and that's without even mentioning his hiring of his alcoholic Colonel buddy and that American Sniper nonsense.

Lol, this made me laugh.  While I do agree with  your assessment of the overseas trips, ‘depantsing’ would mean they pulled our pants up, no?

I disagree on the other fronts tho.  I wasn’t thrilled with the signing day with celebrities and all that crap, but it worked to bring some attention to the program.  Unfortunately, kids want the ‘bling’, and this probably did help him at the start.  If it were continued now, I agree it would be embarrassing.

I liked the satellite camps and I think there was a great deal of positivity around them.  They helped recruiting, HS kids (not just the 5*) enjoyed the experience.  I remember following a bit of the news from those camps and I can say this, Harbaugh worked his ass off that off season.

To anyone encouraging Michigan to employ unethical methods to get recruits (bagman) please feel free to go root for some other team. My allegiance to Michigan football is not only because of the education that I received there, it's not only because of the incredible tradition of the football program, but it's also due to understanding that for the 40 years that I've watched college football (of course pre-dating my enrollment), Michigan has won with integrity, character, and the standard of molding student athletes into productive adults.

I don't EVER want Michigan athletics to stoop to the "win at all costs" level of Alabama, OSU, USC, Miami, etc... If Michigan EVER stooped that low, I'd no longer root for the program. The basketball program in the 1990's broke my heart, and caused me a decade of consternation over the basketball team. Coach Amaker restored my faith in the program's integrity, and Coach Beilein restored my enthusiasm.

So, I'm fine if Michigan is an ethical 10-11 win team, annually. I want another National Title, who doesn't? But I am not willing to see the university that I love have its football program devolve into soliciting recruits with 'bagmen', prostitutes, and cars. Further, I do not want any student/athlete whose commitment to our fine university can be compromised by one football game. I prefer student/athletes who commit to not only the football team, but to the university that has edified many of our lives, and that offers so much more than football. I want recruits who come to campus and love MICHIGAN, not just Michigan football.

Yes, I'm frustrated with losing to Ohio State. But, I'd rather lose another 14/15 years than to become OSU. As Nietzsche once said - "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster".

Michigan and ND are sort of similar right now.  Neither school is willing to get really dirty.  Both are recruiting at about the same level, which is just one notch below the very top.

Both schools are recruiting with a 'win a lot at a place that has a great football tradition but is more than just football.'

In contrast, Alabama, OSU, and Clemson pitch 'win lots of championships, go to the playoff, you'll be 'taken care of' in every way.'

Kelly is embarrassing on the sideline though...

Do you truly believe that Michigan is so superior that we can competitively recruit with schools who pay while we don’t? We had a top 10 class in 2016 and a top 5 class in 2017. Either Harbaugh and staff are the greatest recruiters of all time and can convince players to pass up tons of cash just to play for him or the difference in cheating isn’t what people on here believe.

Well, that’s painful. Thought he was actually focused on a great education based on the comments by him and the family.  Guess great football + mediocre education > good football + great education.

Until UM decides to recruit with the same “commitment” as UGA, Bama and OSU, we will struggle to compete for the top tier.

College football is broken. Alabama has fractured it, removed any surprise. Monopolized it.  Sure, there used to be dynasties and 2-3 serious contenders a year...now there's just one. Alabama at just 75% effort should win any remaining games and their 6th championship in 11 years. They were basically a few insane plays away from 8 or 9 in 11 years. Who will be the favorite next year? Not Alabama?

College football has gotten top heavy and boring. Predictable. No need for a "Phil Steele" "most accurate prediction mag"... Any casual fan can predict the playoff or get darn close.

Michigan is just one of many programs that will never compete for anything meaningful while this continues. Feel worse for LSU, Georgia, etc. They are throwing even more money at something they can't hope to overcome. And they have to play Alabama at least once a year to go anywhere.

Ghost of Fritz…

December 8th, 2018 at 10:41 PM ^

This true.

Question is, what are the factors that produced this?  And what (and when) will break this cycle?

My guess is that coaching changes are going to be part of it.  Very unlikely that Day will win at the 90% clip of Meyer.  Saban is 67.  Only a few more years?  No way Saban's replacement will keep Alabama at the same level.  Clemson?  Dabo is young.

Harbaugh has gotten Michigan exact at, or een slightly above, the level that Carr achieved.  Michigan is in the 7-12th best program range right now.

If Harbaugh keeps Michigan at that level, then the program will be well positioned to get to the top 5 level.
