OSU Snowflakes - The Coaching

This will be the thread for hot takes and snowflakes regarding the overall coaching in this game versus Ohio State.

That whole take is just bullshit. We lost our middle linebacker, cornerback, tight end and quarterback to injuries in this game. Michigan lost this game at the LOS, period. On both sides of the ball. It wasn't the fucking playcalling. It wasn't poor tackling. It was the inability to make plays on first down and get off the field on defense. All the rest was just the way that played itself out.

So, let me ask, if you fire Harbaugh, who do you get that wins this game over Meyer? Give me a solid answer. I am so sick of reading that as the answer to every issue.

I just knew you injury apologists would come along.  Ohio was missing their best player and they still got it done. All this bullshit about having to have every piece just perfect is bullshit.  "We don't have the players, we're hurt, blah blah blah". Just so ILL.

Coaching is the difference.  Just a horrible gameplan on both sides of the ball.  The dude is paid $7m+ to win games like this, or at the very least not get humiliated.

I agree. This was the first time in a long time Michigan actually came into the game with no key players injured. And they played pretty bad. Most of the injuries came when the game was already starting to get out of hand (Gentry had dropped two first down balls before his injury, and by the time Bush and Long went out the D had already ceded well over 200 yards and plenty of points). Even if those guys didn't get hurt this game, Michigan was still going to lose this game.

No one played well. And the coaching schemes were terrible.

I agree and disagree...  The game was lost at the line of scrimmage; however, OSU was keeping guys in to block.  We would have Gentry block for a second then go run a route and drop passes.  Adjustments could have been made to better protect Shea.

Not running a zone or subbing faster players that wouldn't get burned was just completely dumb.  I mean, really, really, staggeringly dumb.

As for a coach, I don't think firing Harbaugh is a good idea simply because stability is important.  However, I hate the stubborn clinging on to a 1980's manball offense and running it up the middle when getting blown out.  Any high school coach that runs a spread would be better.  That was just an awful and predictable gameplan.  No way to sugar coat it.

I believe the buckeyes lost the beat player in college football. I saw no excuses from them. In fact, I saw a pass rush that was destroying the OL. Stop the whining. " Give me a solid answer. I am so sick of reading that as the answer to every issue".

Dwayne Haskins on Michigan's D on film: "I was licking my chops, I see the one-high covers and that's a quarterback's dream. The biggest responsibility for me all week was to be able to pick up blitzes and protection, because we saw a lot of different fronts and exotic looks."

I swear that Harbaugh is delusional in that he wants to literally be Bo.  He wants to play just like Bo did.  He wants to try and win in the ways that Bo did.  From his stupid glasses to his play calling.  He wants to bring Michigan back to 1985 and run the ball and "try and stop us" even you know we are gonna run the ball straight up the middle.

DON’T have the talent? This team has quite a bit of talent, and many teams can do more with less. Not coaching them up. Today was all about not being prepared & out Coached. You know what OSU can and can’t do and vis versa. OSU came at our weaknesses and We didn’t theirs. Thus, Urban >>Harbaugh

No, Michigan started playing better defenses and they don't have counters to that.  People just kept assuming they were "holding stuff back."

We've been saying that since year 1 of Harbaugh and its never, ever been true.  Its a very what you see is what you get offense.  If it looks like things are boring, plain, and uninspired its because that's what the offense is.

Personally I'm sick of having to watch this game at the end of the season for the past 30 years. You wont hear me say it often but I say fuck tradition in that sense. Who gives a shit when it's played. All the alumni will tell me to fuck off and that the season should always come down to that game for the B1G championship. Why? If you played it in early October it would mean the same thing in the win and loss column right? That's all that matters to me. The win and loss column boys.

Help me. What exactly did Meyer do today that was so crazy innovative?  Call quick-hitting crossing routes to get the ball out of Haskins hands fast?  That's what they have done all year, quick passes and big YAC.  It wasn't like they had a consistent running game against us until after we had imploded.

Our OL was a question mark going into the year.  It improved a lot as the year went on but has not yet improved enough.  The OSU front 7 was the best we faced all year and the OL didn't ge tit done.

The only thing I see that Meyer outcoaches us in is getting better, faster, more talented players and then getting them to point toward the game against us as meaning everything.

The main (only) difference in this game is that one team identified and attacked the other team's weaknesses and the other didn't.  Michigan has had problems with quick passes all season.  That's Ohio State's bread and butter on offense and Michigan didn't anticipate that and had no response to it -- same as they've had with that issue all season.

On offense, Ohio State had clear weaknesses.  Michigan did absolutely nothing to attack those.  Nothing at all.  Just run after run up the middle.  No misdirection, no RPOs, nothing.  Just an arrogant desire to stick to what they've done all season.

The difference between Harbaugh and the top coaches in CFB is the top coaches will target weaknesses and adapt.  Harbaugh has shown no desire to do that at all.  And his base vanilla is fine against outmatched teams, but when facing quality teams with good coaches, he fails.  And to me, that's why his record against good teams is shit.

Spot fucking on. It’s like we got Durkin’d again and all the coaches took this week off. Everyone including OSU knew what we were going to do and yet we didn’t change a thing. Pathetic. Offensively, our play calling is so atrocious it mirrors an ineptitude only seen by the worst of programs. To attacking OSU’s strength on their defense is a firable offense. No tempo, no deep passing attack, no screens. How can one justify the offensive gameplan? Shame on them. And shame on me for thinking that maybe this year would have been different.

I completely agree. I truly feel like Michigan’s coaching staff would benefit from reading Brian and Seth’s analyses. They clearly identified OSU’s STRENGTHS (especially interior D line) and WEAKNESSES (secondary, especially deep coverage). Yet, what did Michigan do? They repeatedly ran up the middle and got stuffed (I stopped counting after 8 times). They basically gave away a down on almost every drive. It was so predictable. THEY put themselves in 3rd and long, over and over, by giving away second down.  Why didn’t they challenge OSU over the top, like Maryland and others have, with success?

How about a snowflake thread for the players?  All but two or three of them showed up and put forth the effort needed to win a game like this.
