How solid (or not) is Sparty's QB depth right now?

Submitted by Fieldy'sNuts on October 18th, 2018 at 1:09 PM

I think most of us would be reasonably comfortable if McCaffrey had to enter the game if Shea had to come out for whatever reason.

But what about Sparty? I looked and no QB besides Lewerke has even attempted a pass this year. Their depth chart shows guys named Rocky Lombardi (RS-FR) and Theo Day (FR) as the second and third string QBs, respectively.

Aside from those both sounding like completely made up names, do we have any impressions of how effective either of these guys would be if they had to come into the game in place of Lewerke? As a reminder, MSU played three different QBs when we last played them in East Lansing.

I forgot what game it was but Lombardi came in for a few plays in mop up duty and just got sacked a few times.

Similar to their back up last year that came into a game and got sacked like 3 straight plays. He transferred in the offseason though. Their depth sucks.

This week has felt like it’s been a year. The game can’t come soon enough. Time for Harbaugh to show the world he hasn’t forgotten how to coach

Honestly, would there be any more sparty way to win against UM that for Lewerke to get hurt, and then have Rocky f---ing Lombardi lead them to a game-winning drive? No thanks, let's just stick to Lewerke, please.

I mean, I'd be completely OK if McCaffrey was our starter on Saturday....That's how much appreciation I have for our QB depth. It's gonna be fun for years to come!

Lewerke is a pretty healthy guy.  I don't think he's missed any games since become the starter.  And, just watching him he doesn't seem to really take big hits and when he does make contact with folks he tends to fall forward.  You never know, but at 6'3" 230 I'd say he's not too likely to get injured.

The thing that concerns me is not Lewerke's ranking, but his ability to make plays with his feet, which he is good at.

IE - ND game this yr and millions of examples of us not being able to stop mobile qbs in the last 10+ yrs

That might be one of the silliest posts on here. Let me say it again: Lombardi has zero (ZERO) experience. He played one ill-advised series a few games back and went three-and-out and looked like crap in the process.

As a Michigan fan, you should be thrilled if Lewerke goes down. We categorically do NOT have a McCaffrey waiting in the wings. By the way, as a Sparty, I am terrified of McCaffrey. He is head and shoulders superior to the so-called "Shaevior" you have starting. McCaffrey is the real deal and that should be frightening for MSU and the BIG 10.

Lewerke is on average: very average. Except, he does have the ability to be a game changer. Luckily he only has one real threat to throw the ball to.

Lombardi-I have friends who played hs football in Iowa against him who will swear he should wrestle in college as he simply wasn't good enough to be a B1G qb and were surprised he ended up at a program like MSU.

Day-Promising freshman but still a true freshman.

Macius - Senior walk-on transfer from Austin Peay who didn't win the job there in 2016.

McLean-True freshman walk-on from Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

Even though he was highly recruited (four-star), he found himself behind in the depth chart this spring (behind both Lombardi and Day).  Seeing the writing on the wall, he transferred.

MSU has zero experience depth at QB right now.

Both back-ups have zero experience. Lombardi has literally one underwhelming series to speak of under his belt (3 and out) and Theo Day has not recorded a minute of playing time.

If Lewerke were to find himself injured it would be game over. Simple as that.

A Sparty fan
