How solid (or not) is Sparty's QB depth right now?
I think most of us would be reasonably comfortable if McCaffrey had to enter the game if Shea had to come out for whatever reason.
But what about Sparty? I looked and no QB besides Lewerke has even attempted a pass this year. Their depth chart shows guys named Rocky Lombardi (RS-FR) and Theo Day (FR) as the second and third string QBs, respectively.
Aside from those both sounding like completely made up names, do we have any impressions of how effective either of these guys would be if they had to come into the game in place of Lewerke? As a reminder, MSU played three different QBs when we last played them in East Lansing.

Patterson said he's getting closer to coming back but indicated that he hasn't been working with him yet. It seems like it would be better to give Black the extra (bye) week to continue healing and get in sync with his QB before sending him back out when depth isn't an immediate concern.
October 18th, 2018 at 1:59 PM ^
Just limited time even as a decoy. But spread black, DPJ and Collins out I would think that opens up a lot in the middle of the field for tight ends and slot.
October 18th, 2018 at 1:35 PM ^
I forgot what game it was but Lombardi came in for a few plays in mop up duty and just got sacked a few times.
Similar to their back up last year that came into a game and got sacked like 3 straight plays. He transferred in the offseason though. Their depth sucks.
October 18th, 2018 at 1:40 PM ^
I think it was against CMU and then they had to put lewerke back in because CMU came back...
October 18th, 2018 at 1:41 PM ^
Yup :)
good memory.

What happened to de Messiah?
October 18th, 2018 at 1:40 PM ^
That's the dudes name I couldn't remember in my post above. He's at East Mississippi CC lol

October 18th, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
He transferred, he was a weaver.
October 18th, 2018 at 1:51 PM ^
I read somewhere that he's doing well at Ferris. If I cared more, I'd find the link for proof. But I don't care. So just take my word.
October 18th, 2018 at 2:04 PM ^
That's the kid who body slammed a security guard at Cass Tech, Jay ru Campbell.... Not Weaver
October 18th, 2018 at 2:06 PM ^
That's Jayru Campbell. And he is doing pretty well at Ferris.
October 18th, 2018 at 2:06 PM ^
The Ferris QB is Jayru Campbell from Cass Tech. He was an MSU commit until he body-slammed a HS Security Guard.
October 18th, 2018 at 2:16 PM ^
You are thinking about Jayru Campbell. Former Cass Tech QB and MSU commit.
October 18th, 2018 at 2:16 PM ^
You are thinking about Jayru Campbell. Former Cass Tech QB and MSU commit.
October 18th, 2018 at 2:42 PM ^
Thanks. I think I was thinking of Jayru Campbell.
October 18th, 2018 at 3:07 PM ^
The former Cass Tech QB and MSU commit?
Wonder whatever happened to that guy...
October 18th, 2018 at 3:29 PM ^
That's jayru Campbell. Pretty sure he's at Ferris. He's been having a good season
October 18th, 2018 at 8:59 PM ^
Who's that and why is he at Ferris St.?
October 19th, 2018 at 7:29 AM ^
What's crazy is that if Hoke didn't get fired he could be starting for us right now. Another example of how inept that staff was as identifying QBs.
October 19th, 2018 at 10:42 AM ^
I've gotta think Speight would be starting under Hoke.
October 18th, 2018 at 2:02 PM ^
This week has felt like it’s been a year. The game can’t come soon enough. Time for Harbaugh to show the world he hasn’t forgotten how to coach
October 18th, 2018 at 2:02 PM ^
Lewerkes gonna get destroyed Saturday
October 18th, 2018 at 2:09 PM ^
Honestly, would there be any more sparty way to win against UM that for Lewerke to get hurt, and then have Rocky f---ing Lombardi lead them to a game-winning drive? No thanks, let's just stick to Lewerke, please.
October 18th, 2018 at 2:11 PM ^
Doesn’t matter this is their super bowl.
October 18th, 2018 at 2:19 PM ^
Sparty QB depth? They are all for it.
October 19th, 2018 at 12:40 AM ^
MSU literally has zero QB depth right now.
October 19th, 2018 at 7:20 AM ^
69-36-5 bitch
October 18th, 2018 at 2:31 PM ^
I mean, I'd be completely OK if McCaffrey was our starter on Saturday....That's how much appreciation I have for our QB depth. It's gonna be fun for years to come!
October 19th, 2018 at 10:45 AM ^
I am piggybacking on your comment here, but I'm curious. Should we make anything of Milton getting starter snaps while Peters continues to ride the bench? Or was this 100% situational?
October 18th, 2018 at 2:36 PM ^
Lewerke is a pretty healthy guy. I don't think he's missed any games since become the starter. And, just watching him he doesn't seem to really take big hits and when he does make contact with folks he tends to fall forward. You never know, but at 6'3" 230 I'd say he's not too likely to get injured.
October 18th, 2018 at 4:38 PM ^
Rashaan Gary is 6'5" 280 something pounds and he's injured. I don't think size has much to do with it. Remember when Mone got hurt in fall camp? He's over 300lbs. Didn't stop him from getting injured though.
October 18th, 2018 at 2:46 PM ^
Let's find out.
October 18th, 2018 at 3:06 PM ^
La’Darius Jefferson will pass, pending situation/circumstance(s).
October 18th, 2018 at 3:07 PM ^
The thing that concerns me is not Lewerke's ranking, but his ability to make plays with his feet, which he is good at.
IE - ND game this yr and millions of examples of us not being able to stop mobile qbs in the last 10+ yrs
October 19th, 2018 at 9:57 AM ^
This.
Especially considering the fact that Michigan football teams never seem to have any idea how to defend a running QB. Seems like we get burned for at least one rushing TD up the gut every single time we play a mobile QB.
October 19th, 2018 at 10:49 AM ^
Mobile QBs are hard for every team to stop. Do we score as many points against Wisconsin without 156 QB rushing yards on 12 carries with 2 TDs?
Unlikely. We also had Denard Robinson which kind of balanced our cosmic mobile QB equilibrium.
October 18th, 2018 at 3:14 PM ^
I would rather play against Lewerke and what we know vs risk Lombardi catching lightning in a bottle.
October 19th, 2018 at 6:07 AM ^
That might be one of the silliest posts on here. Let me say it again: Lombardi has zero (ZERO) experience. He played one ill-advised series a few games back and went three-and-out and looked like crap in the process.
As a Michigan fan, you should be thrilled if Lewerke goes down. We categorically do NOT have a McCaffrey waiting in the wings. By the way, as a Sparty, I am terrified of McCaffrey. He is head and shoulders superior to the so-called "Shaevior" you have starting. McCaffrey is the real deal and that should be frightening for MSU and the BIG 10.
October 19th, 2018 at 10:52 AM ^
Are you basing you're McCaffrey take on his garbage time snaps?
Patterson is likely leaving for the NFL after this year. There's no way you start anybody but him.
October 18th, 2018 at 3:14 PM ^
They barely have a top-100 offense WITH Lewerke; my guess is that they'd be worse without him.
October 18th, 2018 at 3:40 PM ^
Lewerke is on average: very average. Except, he does have the ability to be a game changer. Luckily he only has one real threat to throw the ball to.
October 18th, 2018 at 4:59 PM ^
I wonder how Theo would do against Michigan in a monsoon. Think we could win by say, 4 points?
October 18th, 2018 at 7:26 PM ^
just call holding already, I hope I only have to say it once Saturday...
October 18th, 2018 at 9:04 PM ^
Lombardi-I have friends who played hs football in Iowa against him who will swear he should wrestle in college as he simply wasn't good enough to be a B1G qb and were surprised he ended up at a program like MSU.
Day-Promising freshman but still a true freshman.
Macius - Senior walk-on transfer from Austin Peay who didn't win the job there in 2016.
McLean-True freshman walk-on from Pontiac Notre Dame Prep
October 18th, 2018 at 10:04 PM ^
Whatever happened to messiah deweaver?
October 19th, 2018 at 12:38 AM ^
Even though he was highly recruited (four-star), he found himself behind in the depth chart this spring (behind both Lombardi and Day). Seeing the writing on the wall, he transferred.
MSU has zero experience depth at QB right now.
Regards,
Sparty fan
October 19th, 2018 at 12:34 AM ^
Both back-ups have zero experience. Lombardi has literally one underwhelming series to speak of under his belt (3 and out) and Theo Day has not recorded a minute of playing time.
If Lewerke were to find himself injured it would be game over. Simple as that.
Sincerely,
A Sparty fan
