Clemson QB Kelly Bryant to transfer

Submitted by Bambi on September 26th, 2018 at 10:10 AM

Following up the trend from Monday of true seniors redshirting after 4 games and transferring, Clemson QB Kelly Bryant just announced he's redshirting and transferring out of the program.

Link

Bryant started the first 4 games this year but split time with true freshman Trevor Lawrence each game. Lawrence outplayed Bryant statistically and was announced to be the started for the upcoming game earlier this week. This is a big blow to Clemson as Bryant probably would have played moving forward in the same split-time system and now Clemson only has one other scholarship QB on roster.

Bryant will probably be the hottest transfer commodity out there. He started for Clemson all last year as they made the playoffs and he will be immediately eligible next year.

I don’t understand Dabo’s thinking here. Unlike the Alabama situation, Bryant can actually throw (67%, 2 TD).

No reason to demote him for a freshman that hasn’t prove much. My $0.02.

Yeah and if you've watched any of Clemson's games, Lawrence clearly looks like the better QB.  And given his willingness to bounce this quick and salvage a final season of playing time, Bryant likely knew Lawrence was much better too.

I mean, if a true freshman has passed you in just four games, you're not getting that job or PT back.

I read Dabo's comments at his presser and came away impressed.  He said based on the way they've played, Lawrence deserved to go out there first for the next game.  That's the way it should be - whoever plays best deserves to start.

He did this knowing that Bryant may act exactly this way, and the decision point at 4 games allows him to make this decision.  He did what was right for the player who earned the start, and the back-up.  May lead to hurting the team overall, but he didn't hide behind waiting until the 5th or 6th game to do it.  Really like that.

Sure, but where is the loyalty?  Lawrence is a true freshman... he can't wait his turn?  I hope this does bite Clemson in the butt down the road, but... lol at that weak ACC to begin with.  Maybe this is a gamble on Dabo's part.

There is NO team on the rest of Clemson's schedule that should scare Dabo.

"[Lawrence] can't wait his turn?"

He's been named the starter, his turn is right now.

The only potential issue with "loyalty" here is Dabo not having loyalty to the QB who led his team to a playoff appearance. That kind of loyalty would be foolish since he believes the freshman gives them a better chance to win.

People will look for reasons to be outraged by this, but this is just a case of everyone involved acting rationally. Dabo's job is to play the best QB. Bryant wants a shot at the NFL and Clemson is no longer his best opportunity to so.

If Saban was "loyal" to Jalen Hurts in the championship game and didn't insert Tua into the lineup at halftime, he would have one less ring today. Coaches have to make the best decision for the team and maintain the meritocracy that we treasure so much with Harbaugh at the helm.

Underclassmen replace upperclassmen even in high school sports. It happens all the time where the younger guy is simply better. I don't believe that a coach owes any particular loyalty to a player in the sense that a starting spot is reserved based on previous performances. Dabo was loyal in the sense that he understands Bryant wants to play at the next level and is likely giving him the opportunity to move on in order to showcase his skills.

Positions are earned every day and every week, not once for the season. Harbaugh's mantra as a coach is, "iron sharpens iron." Competition keeps everyone trying their hardest. If there is no chance that a starter can lose his job because of 'loyalty,' what in the hell is the point of having a malleable depth chart? What is the point of having different QBs take reps? Why should anyone be entitled to hold a position in which someone else on the same team may perform better? Should we determine starters in August and refuse to change it thereafter? It makes no sense because, by that logic, Nolan Ulzio would have started at RT all of last year by virtue of being a starter at the beginning of the season.

Competition breeds success.

Clemson's offense is missing a spark with Bryant in there. Much like Bama with Jalen Hurts. Sure they can and probably will beat most of the teams on their schedule with Bryant but come playoff time you don't want to be inserting the true freshman with little experience because you're down 13-0 to Georgia at halftime.

Dabo also effectively started Lawrence on Saturday. Bryant got two series, went 5 and out and 3 and out. Bryant didn't see the field again until it was 42 or 35-7

Rick Neuheisel made a great point about it this morning.  Last yr against Bama, Bryrant was 18-37 for 122 yds.  The two previous years, Deshaun Watson threw for over 400 yds in each of the two games he played against Bama.  Dabo likely doesn't think he can beat Bama with Bryant and wants to give Lawrence the shot.  Same way Saban decided that his team is better with Tua.

I don't have any problem with the decision.  I know Bryant is likely emotionally hurt and pissed, but he is still always one play away from being the starter again on one of the best teams in the country.

Is OSU an injury to Haskins away from tanking?  They're obviously better with Haskins, but Martell is 23-28 for 269 yds and a TD with 0 INTs in mop up duty.  Also 18 carries for 121 yds and 2 TDs.  Again, there's a drop from Haskins to Martell, but I don't think it's comparable to Clemson going from Lawrence to Brice.

I understand that people have to do what they think is best for them; but Bryant saying he didn’t get a fair chance is crazy. He played all last year and split time in 4 games this year. Trevor Lawrence is just better. Plain and simple. Bryant is no slouch. He performed quite well last season and also this year, but I feel Dabo made the right choice with giving Lawrence the starting job. He has more upside and will only get better as the season moves along.

I don’t mind him transferring so he can play somewhere else next year; just confused about him saying he didn’t get a fair chance. Just my $.02.

Don't put Clemson and OSU into the same boat FSU was in last year.  That FSU team had (and still has) significant infrastructure issues on the OL, and a bunch of depth problems.  Also, they apparently had locker room problems that caused a lot of players to quit on Fisher.  In no way is last years FSU the same situation that OSU or Clemson are looking at if they lose a QB.

"and was announced to be the started for the upcoming game earlier this week"

Me no English good.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Lawrence will be the starter for the upcoming game.

I think the main concern he had was that it's his last year of eligibility. If he had another year left, maybe he could have stuck it out. Now he's using the new redshirt rule to his advantage, and gets to play a full season next year presumably as the QB1 for a team (wherever he ends up) that doesn't have someone as talented as T. Lawrence as another option.

Dabo can't be happy about this - could really end up costing them a shot at the playoff if Lawrence struggles or gets banged up.

I don't get the stupidity of coaches sometimes.  Yes, I understand that you want to play the best quarterback available but the best quarterback is a TRUE FRESHMAN.  You have a guy like Kelly Bryant who waited behind Watson and as far as I can tell is pretty damn solid.  What happens if Trever is having a bad game or gets injured???

Frost did the same stupid thing.  Why declare a TRUE FRESHMAN the starter and piss off the guy who has been with the program for a few  years?  Now they have to depend on a banged up Martinez and a WALK ON QB.

Back in the day, coaches were loyal to their QBs.  I understand if a QB is downright horrible and the younger option is the right choice to play, but from my eye test there aint anything wrong with Bryan Kelly, Jalen Hurts, and whatever ever good upperclassman QB there is.

Devil's advocate - JH was perhaps too loyal last year to guys like JOK and it may have cost us a game (vs MSU).... Not saying Brandon Peters was elite coming off the bench, but we can all agree he gave the team a much better chance to win than O'Korn. Not saying there is a right or wrong answer to being loyal to a QB, just looking at it from both angles.

Coaches gotta play the best guy regardless of class. Last year Harbaugh played Speight and JOK over freshman Peters and (a) it maybe cost us a game or two and (b) was heavily criticized. Obviously not the same situation since Bryant > our QBs, but I think the point stands.

Like with anything, if you win you're a genius and if you lose it was obviously the wrong decision.

Kind of a different situation though.  When the coaches were saying Brandon Peters was not ready to play at PSU, you have to think they had solid reasons for saying it.  O'Korn ran for his life in that game, not sure Peters would have escaped as well.

Clemson has a superstar QB and a slightly lesser superstar QB. (or... apparently... HAD since he's leaving)

Dabo might have taken the logical, or rational, approach too far in this case.

Your working in a fantasy world like your playing NCAA 14.   How do you run a program when the guy that is better is sitting?   How would you feel if you clearly were performing better bur didn't get a chance to play?   How would your teammates feel?

Alabama would most likely have lost the NC game if Hurts stayed in the game.   Your willing to lose the NC to not piss off inferior players?

Everyone should be allowed 5 years.   Having a backup QB leave midseason off a NC caliber team is insane.   They need to get together to tweak the rule again.
