Our D is not nearly the top 3 defenses in the season. I was counting on a top 5 defense for any hope of winning a B1G championship.  I just worry PSU and OSU are going to score a lot of points and we may not have a good enough OL to give Shea the time he needs to keep up with the other teams scoring.

People need to chill. 2 legit scoring drives and one score on a bust. Likely not much of a scouting report on the backup QB, WR had the game of his life, and penalties kept things going. Shit happens.

SMU converted in third and long over and over. It was similar to the way Haskins chewed up Michigan last November. It was a solid performance. That said, without more variety, this defense isnt good enough. It’s okay to rush four and help those safeties underneath with a linebacker. Michigan absolutely needs to mix in more zone.

Refs really held our defense in check.. notwithstanding, it was not the best performance on D.  Teams can beat us with the deep ball, slants, and a running QB. Pretty easy to figure out.

did the bath salts wear off? i was expecting more of the idiotic hot takes you were spewing throughout the geme thread.

people like you make this board damn near unreadable when things don’t go well. it’s one thing to be disappointed, but it’s another to constantly gripe and bitch like my 5 year old when he doesn’t get his way

i get that it’s sarcasm, but i’m on board with being really disappointed in the team’s effort and coaching today - that’s totally fair.

my problem is this guy being an internet toughguy insulting players and coaches personally (not ‘that was a shitty call/bad play’), but saying really insulting things that he wouldn’t have the balls to say to anyone’s face - much less a d1 athlete

The kindest word I can think of to describe StraightDave is curmudgeon.

Candidly, he's a grade-A asshole.

Unfortunately, he's not a troll so he pops up and spews his (sincerely held) garbage thoughts without getting banned. If he was actually attacking kids personally in the game thread, I hope mods bring the banhammer.

If we can score close to this many points, we will win 10+ games this season with this defense. Last year, we would have lost this game with our QB mess. This defense is good enough with our ability to throw the ball deep.

Unless the OL can really improve by the time we play a good defense, I would say there's a chance but I think Shea will be under extreme pressure when we play WI, PSU, MSU and OSU. We really need our D come around. Just watching the game, I was surprised how SMU handled our D LINE. Brown's defense are all based on the DL getting pressure on the QB with single coverage. That is not going to well this season.

Apparently other coordinators didn’t share with don how to defend 3rd and 16+. For the life of me I don’t understand the linemen always pushing up field when it’s inevitable a draw or screen is coming. QB scrambles of 18+ in 2 of 3 games this year. That spells doom when we play Haskins, lewerke, and mcsorely. Also how do we learn how to turn our head around in man? Would have had two or three more picks in that game.

I am disappointed that they fell just short of the program record for penalties. But, aside from that and some lapses against Proche, the defense had its moments. What do you do? The game may have been competitive more than we would have liked, but the Metellus pick effectively secured it and it's hard to evaluate SMU's second-half drives because the flags were flying at a silly rate and that has to affect the defense, too. You're told by a coach who KNOWS (Don Brown) to play aggressive and it works, and then you're told to be careful because the referees are calling things a lot closer than you're used to seeing... that's hard to process. The game was in hand - they did what they needed to do to put up a 25-point win over a bottom-five conference opponent. We really don't know what we have this year, and in all likelihood because of Nebraska's QB situation, it might be a while before we do know.

Whoever downvotes those saying this defense needs work didnt eatch that shitshow today!  12 penalties and I believe 10 were on the defense!   Get real.  And FFS drink some GD electrolytes.

Roughing the passer on Hutchinson: Bullshit

Targeting on Hudson: Bullshit

At least 2 of the PIs were bullshit and were flagged because the DB dominated and the receiver fell down.

There were legit instances of PI today, but refs colored our perception of the defense today. They were trash.

SMU just gave everyone left on our schedule the perfect blueprint to beat our defense. Chuck it deep and wait for the PI call, and then slant us to death.

I still believe in Brown 100%. The man knows what he’s doing and he will adjust accordingly. But today was just not a good day for his unit.

I also am tired of the excuse that "the QB just made amazing throws today and statistics say they'll regress to the mean".  IT KEEPS HAPPENING.  When do we start to anticipate it instead of making excuses on why we keep getting burnt against quality teams....or in today's game, not very quality.

Defense is good but it needs to shore up the issues that constantly hurt it.

Why do fans think that a great defense means they have everything under control at all times? Perfect offense beats perfect defense. Every time. Sometimes, offenses execute perfectly. There is no defense for a perfect pass. They happen sometimes. You tip your cap.

There is one legitimate complaint about this defense: over-pursuit. Misdirection still hits for big plays most of the time. Guys need to be better at playing their gaps responsibly, especially in the back side vs the run. That 4th and 1 counter pitch was too easy, and I can't believe SMU only ran it once.

This may come as a surprise to some, but college quarterbacks are pretty damn good at throwing a football. You have to pressure and confuse them. Don Brown's defense does a lot of the first but not much of the second. And when the pressure doesn't come home, you get all those "perfect" throws.

Our defense is overrated. Our safeties are flat out liabilities in coverage any team with a semblance of a passing attack is going to exploit that. Bad performance today.

Buddy, people don’t need to see us beat EVERYONE by 50. They want to see us beat teams by 50 that are supposed to get beat by 50. Like WMU or SMU.

If we win an ugly slopfest by 1 against an undefeated OSU where the defense commits 20 PI penalties, you think anyone here is going to really care about all of the penalties?

Context, pal.

Sometimes team come out and play well. This is still college football. There is a reason why good teams lose. People have way too much expectation. May be the coaches didn't care if we win by 25 or 50. May be They wanted to try those formations to see what needs to be improved. I Don't know.

Unless we shut them out we are bad and DB is overrated is bull. Read some of the comments. People can be miserable if they want. I am not one of them.

We still can't cover the slot. That will cost us a game if it isn't fixed soon.

Penalties were annoying/dumb but a lot of those I feel like won't be called consistently all year. It's a concern, but not as big as the slot IMO.

Hilarious how anyone saying this defense has been exposed gets negged. It's a fact! Imagine what's gonna happen to this defense against Penn State and Ohio State. It's gonna be very ugly. Wisconsin will probably wreck them too. Sparty might even manage to look like a competent offensive unit.

That was all kinds of bad. At one point early in the fourth quarter SMU was 5-10 on 3rd down conversions.....SMU....50%. I mean seriously, are the data analysts not seeing Don Brown's defense has been downloaded on third down? His tendencies and strategies are a known quantity and it shows. It's time to overhaul the habits or every game is going to end up like PSU last year. The 3rd down and long tendencies are particularly galling at this point.

It reminds me of when our offense couldn't score TDs in the red zone. Ugh...

After every game where Michigan gives up more than a score some people go "Brown has been figured out now!" Dude's been coaching for many years, has been a FBS DC for a decade. He was 'figured out' before he was even hired by Michigan. Every coordinator out there is 'figured out'.

Unsurprisingly, there's trade-offs in every scheme you run. Unsurprisingly some offensive methods work better against some defensive methods and vice versa. If a QB can run like a RB, has a credible downfield threat and some capable option backs at his disposal, he's gonna shred. That's what an offense like SMU's is designed to do and there's no silver bullet to stop that. They executed well today and still lost by 20+ points.

And to this day the same holds true - if our offense was even approaching the quality of our defense, we'd be a playoff contender for real. We're a less than great team because our offense gets stifled by good defenses, not because our defense gets routinely torn apart.

It's not accurate to say everyone starts bitching when Michigan gives up more than one score. I think its fair to measure the quality of the opponent. SMU lost to UNT 46-23 and while I understand we're not supposed to supply the transitive property, I don't think anyone would seriously argue that we weren't supposed to blow their doors off.

The D flat out underperformed and the 3rd down situation is becoming a trend. If we're giving up 50% conversion rates to 0-3 teams like SMU during non-garbage time. Should OSU, PSU, and MSU get 100%?

Refs -1000000

There were a couple legitimate PI instances, and that's OK when you're a heavy man coverage team. We'd rather get flagged for 15 than give up a long TD. However, when a DB dominates a route and the ball sails over his head while a receiver falls beside him, stop flagging it. There were 2 AWFUL PI flags on the same drive as the awful targeting ejection.
