Harbaugh getting DRAGGED in the media today
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:28 AM ^
Well it's year 4 and the oline still sucks and play calling sucks too. So it's deserved
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:43 AM ^
You know it’s bad when Mike Tirico, one of the nicest guys in sports, is taking multiple shots at you during at game. That two minute drill was just baaaaaaaad. Not even sure Hoke had a two minute drill go that poorly.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:19 AM ^
Mike is a ND lackey at this point and sounded pathetic at times during that broadcast. I get that it’s weirdo ND time on NBC but it’s a bit much when flutie has to step away from the booth because they gave Michigan a first down after a review.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:20 AM ^
He lives in Ann Arbor and is a friend of the program
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:34 AM ^
He was on Jansen's podcast earlier this week. He basically admitted, he's paid to be an ND slappy.
September 2nd, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
Quite possibly the stupidest comment I've read on this board this morning and that's saying A LOT.
September 2nd, 2018 at 12:10 PM ^
You sound like a certain resident of Washington DC. Just make an ad hominem on anyone who says something true and negative about something you like.
September 2nd, 2018 at 4:48 PM ^
Yeah, that was frustrating.
But then again...they did score. And they did it with enough time left to get the ball back and advance to midfield before the game killing turnover.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:28 AM ^
What's the difference? Its the same result with every coach. The team gets progressively worse until the team quits on the staff. I never thought it could come to this. I stopped watching the Lions cold turkey basically for the same reason.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:35 AM ^
That’s what I kept thinking about in the second half yesterday: why do I keep caring about this? I quit watching the Lions years ago because it just wasn’t fun. Same with the Pistons. I’m pretty much there with Michigan. There are plenty of better ways to enjoy a Saturday because I’ve seen this same movie several times.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:31 AM ^
I don't think that we'll get a better coach than JH, but I'm honestly very disappointed in the way the team played last night. I honestly haven't felt like this since the last time we played ND.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:38 AM ^
I think you can get someone better, because I’m honestly not sure what he brings to the table anymore. His offenses are just bad and outdated, and his ability to recruit seems to be questionable too.
If the floor is 8-9 wins a year there are a lot of coaches that could pull that off at Michigan.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:37 AM ^
Agree. What does he bring anymore? Coaching mistakes last night: DPJ catches a punt inside the 5. We run time off the clock at the end of a quarter when we could’ve run a play...you only get so many opportunities to run plays, and the time management was again horrible.
I dont even even know what to think anymore. Oh well, at least we’ll get to hear and see all the hype next week telling us “WE ARE MICHIGAN”...
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:49 AM ^
The DPJ catch inside the 5 wasn't that bad given the circumstances. There was little time on the clock the most likely path to points was a long punt return. So, he took a chance.
September 2nd, 2018 at 11:16 AM ^
Plus if we’re willing to spend 7million+ for this, we can certainly throw that bag at whichever coach we decided we wanted, like Matt Campbell or something. All hypothetical but it’s not impossible to find someone better than what we’re watching right now.
September 2nd, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
You summed it up. Biggest name coach we can get? Yes. Best coach? No.
Many coaches are doing better with less talent and more resources. I still haven't fully lost faith in Harbaugh because I used to be a fan, but shit, it's hard to justify this. Who would've thought after 4 years we still can't run the ball or keep a quarterback upright.
September 2nd, 2018 at 2:17 PM ^
Absolutely.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:48 AM ^
1-6 against rivals, and 9-9 in last 18 games.
The bar isn't set very high.
September 2nd, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
Honest Question here. Why do you think UM could not get a better coach? There are 8 million reasons as to why we could. For that $ one would think better coaoches would come out of the woodwork. For that matter I would be willing to bet UM already has a better HC on staff. Looking at you Don Brown.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:32 AM ^
Well I don’t blame them for dragging him... We managed 10 points on offense with his hand picked QB... I’m not sure how anyone can continue to defend this mediocrity
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:37 AM ^
Not sure I would call Patterson his "hand picked QB" - the kid was playing his first game on a new team under a new-ish system (and a night road game in hostile territory to boot). About the same as Ruddock's first start. I was rather pleased with the performance of the QB that Harbaugh actually did hand pick and groom - McCaffrey. That kid will be good very soon if the OL doesn't get him hurt.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:41 AM ^
QB play last night was pretty good. Far better than anything last year. The thing that just kills the offense is the tackle situation. That’s been a problem since he’s been here and nothing at all has been done to fix it. Until that gets fixed the ceiling for this offense and teams is mediocre. Because good teams with an above average DL are just going to destroy their offensive line.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:46 AM ^
Wasn't Newsome a pretty good tackle? M did lose a quality player at the position unexpectedly.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:52 AM ^
This is true, but it also happened two seasons ago. There has been plenty of time to develop someone at least serviceable.
September 2nd, 2018 at 10:41 AM ^
He was one tackle. You need two. And he went down years ago and they haven't been able to find a solid option for either tackle spot since then. And the current best options to do so are once again a transfer from the DL and some super raw true freshman. So this isn't an issue that is getting fixed this year or next year.
Given the makeup of the OL, the absolute earliest Michigan might have a good OL is 2020. And even then, they are likely going to have true juniors or redshirt sophomores playing tackle. Which still isn't good.
September 2nd, 2018 at 12:36 PM ^
Logan Tulley Tullman was pretty good too until his indiscretion. . .
September 2nd, 2018 at 3:09 PM ^
The problem is his pass play designs is taking for 4 to 5 seconds to develop giving the d line enough time to get to our slower qbs. While these new offenses is throwing the ball within 3 seconds. If it not there in 3 secs the qb is taking off
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:32 AM ^
I tend to agree with all of it. It’s his offense and his issue at tackle he hasn’t been able to fix. For all the fire Pep and fire Drevno folks, this is Harbaugh’s offense. Always has been and always will be. The only reason they looked good under Fisch is because that was the best situation at tackle.
Add in the complete inability for this team to look even remotely prepared for big games and their penchant for shooting themselves in the foot and you have a whole host of issues that point back to him.
It does tend to feel like the beginning of the end, because this is surely going to be another 8-9 win season.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:00 AM ^
The thing that shocks me the most is how undisciplined Harbaugh's Michigan teams have been. There have been an unacceptably high number of errors and penalties. At first I thought it was bad luck, like with the punt drop against MSU, but now it's clear that a systemic thing. I'm tired of dropped punts, dropped field goals, fumbled hand offs to tight ends, penalties that negate a 3rd down stop, and piss poor clock management. It astonishes me how we find new and unique ways to kill momentum and fuck ourselves.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:04 AM ^
This is pretty much my sentiment exactly.
I don't think he's a good "gameday" coach. As you said, everything from not going with max protect on a punt against Sparty to handing the ball off to 84 in the bowl game.
September 2nd, 2018 at 10:52 AM ^
so.....you're guaranteeeeing 8 wins? thank god.
September 2nd, 2018 at 10:55 AM ^
this new format absolutely sucks. things difficult to find and wont put things where they belong.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:32 AM ^
As Rece Davis said yesterday, "I can't wait for the mass overreaction after this game".
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:17 AM ^
Exactly. First game of the year on the road at night against a really good team.
If there is no improvement in the next few weeks then I will join the sky is falling crowd.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:18 AM ^
How about absolutely no improvement from last year to this year? That’s not not enough? Or are you still on the Hebert and Warinner will change everything?
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:32 AM ^
Just going to let it play out a bit more before I freak out.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:50 AM ^
Thank you. Yeesh people or freaking the hell out! Last night was frustrating as shit, but people continue to connect unrelated events (i.e., night games from a decade ago.) to magnify the situation.
It would've been nice to have a preseason-type game against a baby seal.
September 2nd, 2018 at 12:24 PM ^
This is year four of playing out with absolutely no improvement on offense. 2015 against Utah, while Michigan lost, everyone saw that there were some positives to build upon. And indeed they did. Maybe my bar is set too high, but yesterday I saw nothing positive upon which to build to give us even a glimmer of hope.
September 2nd, 2018 at 1:04 PM ^
Uh, I think after ten plus years it has been enough time. Don't let the name recognition of Harbaugh give this coach a free pass. Insert the names Hoke or RR and they didn't get that luxury. The prodigal son has not and looks like will not deliver.
September 2nd, 2018 at 1:01 PM ^
Yaup that’s all we got right now. Hope it gets better, hope that this game turns out to be “reasonable” loss becuae ND wins a lot this year, hope the players use this game and learn to not make dumb fuckin undisciplined mistakes, It’s jusy what is
Waking up this morning i was way more upset but what can you do, just going to wait and see how they respond.
Sigh. Hail
September 2nd, 2018 at 11:10 AM ^
1-6 vs rivals and 9-9 over the past 1.5 years. Do you want us to believe everything is good?
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:34 AM ^
Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune, who is not talentless or wholly unreasonable, but seems at least mildly obsessed with Harbaugh and Michigan, took a few shots (only some deserved) a short time ago.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:58 AM ^
Greenstein despises Michigan and Harbaugh. He does so in a relatively low key way publicly, but he does. I would not use him as the barometer.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:34 AM ^
It's all absolutely deserved.
Here's hoping that things can turn around, but you have to wonder, at some point, if Harbaugh's ceiling is 8/9 win teams we should fire him and hire one of the many coaches who can deliver those middling results for half of his outlandish price.
Most overpaid and overrated staff in the United States.
This feels like an 8 win season with 3 rivalry losses. I guess you give him one more chance in 2019 with the favorable schedule? But is anything less than a Big Ten Championship next year, after what could potentially be putrid 2017 and 2018 seasons, acceptable? For this level of salary?
September 2nd, 2018 at 10:43 AM ^
He is under contract through 2021 for 7 million per year. Unless he quits or has a scandal that allows him to be fired for cause Harbaugh is not going anywhere until at least the end of 2020.
I can’t see us paying him that kind of money not to coach for multiple years based on 7 to 9 win seasons every year. Let’s hope things improve but he is our coach for the next three years.
September 2nd, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
Sets up 2019 to be a big year for him then. Because at some point either during or prior to the 2020 season they are going to have to decide wether or not they want to extend his contract. Because you can't have a coach out there with just one year left on his deal. That's recruiting poison.
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:36 AM ^
The offense in this game, from the play calling to the execution, was disgusting. The offensive line is offensive to watch. Jon Runyan, Jr is as bad a LT as has played at Michigan since I began watching in the early 70s. The entirety of the OL is garbage. The recruiting needed to fix the issues the offense has has been pathetic. This does feel like the Hoke era where we continually get worse until theres no choice but to start again. My faith in Harbaugh has been shattered.
September 2nd, 2018 at 9:16 AM ^
I said it in UMBIG11 dribble he posted and I’ll say it again, Ruyan is awful he was not good against South Carolina and the line on the left should be Bredeson at LT, Spanniels(sp) or Ruiz at guard/center.
I hope it’s now common knowledge how bad Runyan is
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:36 AM ^
Harbaugh is Brady Hoke with more school/fan support and less wins against our rivals ...
September 2nd, 2018 at 8:59 AM ^
One of the stories pointed out that even Hoke never lost 4 in a row at Michigan
