Tristan Gebbia to transfer - Nebraska down to 1 scholarship QB (a true freshman)
August 27th, 2018 at 4:51 PM ^
Geez, if I didn't think that Scott Frost was a dipshit buttmunch ass weasel, I'd feel bad for him.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:52 PM ^
Given the actions of other coaches in this conference who actually deserve that moniker, Scott Frost and his mom don't seem so bad to me anymore (unfortunately).
August 27th, 2018 at 4:53 PM ^
I mean, let's just wait a few years, who knows.
August 27th, 2018 at 6:41 PM ^
or at least a few weeks
August 27th, 2018 at 9:48 PM ^
Well maybe. I hadn't heard about any heat exhaustion problems, but the mgoblog staff mentioned it in the podcast and said Frost handled it well. He clearly laid out what happened and took responsibility and said steps were being so it doesn't happen again. The Big Ten will be so much better off if some program besides Wisconsin can win games in the West. It'll be good to have a guy to root against solely for rivalry-type reasons instead of literally being a POS human, so hopefully that's what happens.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:49 PM ^
Same way you talked about Coach Franklin at psu.
Let's just keep our house in order.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:51 PM ^
Making our depth concerns at WR look like riches
August 27th, 2018 at 5:07 PM ^
Serious question: Any word out of Columbus or EL about injured starters?
Are these teams actually practicing in the Australian outback where no one can observe guys walking around in a boot or doing exercises with no pads on?
Heard about the Penn State injuries. Heard about the Rutgers guys getting arrested (wouldn't matter anyway). Heard about...plenty of teams.
Have not heard a peep out of Columbus (except for all the other stuff...) or EL.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:31 PM ^
MSU lost their best corner - Soph from Ohio whose name I forget - for 6-8 weeks early in camp. He will be back in time for our game by all indications. That is all I know re: MSU.
August 27th, 2018 at 8:33 PM ^
They are now even thinner at QB than Sparty, who are Lewerke and a bunch of guys who may not be good enough to start at EMU right now. If Martinez can execute Frosts offense and stays healthy all season, Nebraska could win nine or ten games.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:52 PM ^
That’s incredibly selfish on Tristan’s part at this stage of the season. I am not sure he would be a great addition to any lockeroom. He has some growing up to do.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
Personally, I could care less about another teams woes. I never want to wish bad things on another team but that's on them. We know all to well what an injury can do to a football team... ...
August 27th, 2018 at 5:13 PM ^
Couldn't care less. Please don't hurt me.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:02 PM ^
Do not agree. This is essentially Mallett (sp?) leaving when RR came in, except he gave it a go through Fall camp before bolting. I don't think he is a fit for what Frost wants to run and just got beat out by a younger player.
I am not sure if Frost deserves kudos here for being honest or to be called out as a moran for not better scheming to keep him on campus. ( I would have at least been tempted to give lip service to an offense fit to Gebbia until I had more depth at the position)
August 27th, 2018 at 8:49 PM ^
From what I read, he actually was a fit for Frost's offense. Apparently Riley brought him in for his arm, but word is he can run. Ran a spread in HS. His HS coaches didn't run him much, but he did score 20 rushing TDs in his career. And word is that it was a pretty tight competition with Martinez. Not sure if scheme was the issue here.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
I'm not quite sure I'd beat the kid up about transferring. He probably has pro football dreams that wouldn't be reached by backing up the new coaches recruit. If he were your kid, would you tell him to take the selfless route and ride the bench?
August 27th, 2018 at 6:51 PM ^
I raised by a coach who taught me not to quit on my team. If the offense was not a fit he could have left before the season and let Nebraska know what they had to work with and possibly bring in another player. He took valuable snaps all fall camp.
Heck he was told he was going to get snaps in the 1st game. I am not sure it benefits him to leave now. The timing seems wrong to me.
August 27th, 2018 at 7:44 PM ^
Jeff George jr. disagrees with you.
August 27th, 2018 at 8:56 PM ^
Why "incredibly"? If his goals are to be NFL QB, then why should he stay at a college that has not given him a chance, transfer, and only have two years left to perhaps play? He leaves now, he gives himself a chance to find a coach who wants him. Selfish, sure. But incredibly selfish?
Unless after season transfers are allowed to go without sitting out a year, I see his move as personally looking out for himself. Scott Frost only had two scholarship QBs on his team, why is that the player's fault? The higher rated recruit was seen as a backup to a lower-rated true freshman--Frost wanted his guy for his offense, and the Gebbia saw the writing on the wall.
August 27th, 2018 at 9:30 PM ^
If he leaves now does that mean he is eligible next fall? I guess I can see the logic in that if that is the case.
It still seems short sighted knowing he is supposed to be getting snaps in the opener. He was in a tight race and we all know so much can change so quickly.
August 28th, 2018 at 8:18 PM ^
Yeah kinda agree here. He can choose for himself but teams can also draw conclusions from those decisions.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:52 PM ^
I keep telling people that Frost isn't going to waltz into Lincoln and win 8 games. If they win 6 this year it would be more impressive than what UCF did last year. This year is going to be rough for them. Without a scholarship QB for a backup it has the potential to go from rough to disastrous. Hope Martinez stays healthy.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:56 PM ^
If their O-line is questionable, they’re gonna have problems... holy cow. Now I have to go look at their schedule.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:02 PM ^
Their schedule is tougher than ours and they (probably...110th in S&P last year, Illinois was second worst at 89th) have the worst defense in the conference. That's...not ideal...when you know your offense will struggle with a new system and freshman QB. They're going to lose a lot of games like 49-21.
August 27th, 2018 at 6:13 PM ^
Yeah, but if they out hit the other team that will be a win in Coach Frost’s book.
August 27th, 2018 at 8:41 PM ^
So I wasn't sure their schedule was tougher than ours, and I just looked. Yeah, it's pretty tough.
All their non-conference games are home, with the toughest being Colorado. Then they have @UM, Purdue, @Wisconsin, @NW, Minnesota, bye, @OSU, Illinois, MSU, @Iowa.
Our non-conference is tougher. We get Wisconsin at home but MSU on the road in rivalry game, so I'd call that a wash. Same as them in @NW and @OSU. We have PSU at home which they don't play; maybe that's equal to @Iowa? Throw in their difficult trip to us, maybe that matches the @ND game in a way. So... I'm not sure theirs is tougher, but it does seem to be on par at least. Which is just brutal.
August 27th, 2018 at 8:58 PM ^
There schedule is tougher because they have to play Michigan and we’ll we get Nebraska.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
I already used my sarcastic “I thought Michigan was the only team that had players leave” card in the thread posted just before this one. Depth is an obvious problem for Nebraska now, and I thought I had heard that Gebbia would get snaps along with Martinez.
Maybe not. Or maybe he just ragequit. We probably underrate the possibility that some transfers are not that comprehensively thought out.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:55 PM ^
Given the timing, my money is squarely on ragequit.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:59 PM ^
Disappointed sure he was. But is this an eye to transferring and being able to play next year?
August 27th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
PJ Fleck is blowing up this kid's phone already.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:57 PM ^
Yes supposedly they were to share snaps.
August 27th, 2018 at 4:59 PM ^
They're going to be down to 0 scholarship QBs by 9/22.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
Sure, but do you mean...Before kickoff? By halftime? Or by the end of the game?
August 27th, 2018 at 5:25 PM ^
I'd guess by half but I'm giving it an extra full day for the post-game MRI should he somehow make it through.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:59 PM ^
He's gonna call in sick before the game. Didn't get any sleep the night before...Don Brown was in his nightmares
August 27th, 2018 at 5:00 PM ^
Wow! That's not good. If the kid is ineffective or gets hurt, Nebraska is up the creek without a paddle. I can somewhat understand how coaches give the starting job to a true freshman. It's generally a move for the future. But, it is the rare qb, or program, that can succeed in those circumstances. If the surrounding team is not good, you risk destroying the confidence of a young player who struggles at the most complicated position on the field.
I'm not a Nebraska fan, and wouldn't care if they went 0-12. But, I am a fan of these kids who find themselves with an opportunity to pursue their dreams. When coaches jeopardize those precarious dreams with lack of development, or rushing a kid, I think it does more harm than good. I'm not saying this is the case at Nebraska. I just hope that Frost has not acted in haste.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:10 PM ^
Probably has no other real options... New system. No great QB on roster from before he arrived.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:21 PM ^
I don't know. I just looked up this kid Gebbia's recruiting profile. He was a composite 4 star who was offered by quite a few power 5 schools. Frost probably just wanted 'his' guy to build around. I don't know if that's the smartest route to go, but he owns the results - success or failure.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
This was already a W for us but damn!
August 27th, 2018 at 5:16 PM ^
Noah Vedral is ineligible to play this season as a transfer from UCF, where Frost and his entire staff coached the past two years.
I am sure that, for a second, Frost was thinking, "Hey, we could use that Noah kid and.....shit...."
August 27th, 2018 at 5:41 PM ^
He should transfer to UM so that he can transfer out of UM in a couple if months.
August 27th, 2018 at 6:36 PM ^
I was thinking along the same lines - maybe this will be Jeff George's landing spot.
August 27th, 2018 at 5:58 PM ^
Is that bad?
August 27th, 2018 at 6:35 PM ^
Jeff George Jr. will be transferring from Pitt to Nebraska in the next 10 minutes I'm sure
August 27th, 2018 at 6:49 PM ^
I'm picturing Scott Frost on the phone with Dylan McCaffrey....."sooo, how's things?"
August 27th, 2018 at 6:56 PM ^
It was always going to be Adrian Martinez. He is the most talented and quickest option for Frost's offense.
But man if he goes down with injury, then yikes.
August 27th, 2018 at 7:02 PM ^
I guess the Sept. 22nd game here is in the bag now. Don Brown and Co. will make mincemeat out of a frosh QB I'd guess.
August 27th, 2018 at 8:04 PM ^
No doubt Grit. You inspired me for a homemade T shirt by the way.
