“If you want to call a (college) WR version of Gronk a "possession receiver" go ahead,”

Black had 11 catches for 149 yards and 1 TD in three games. Those stats mostly came from 2 catches in the Florida game. He followed that up with 4 catches for 11 yards vs Cincy and 5 catches vs an over matched Air Force team. To compare him to the biggest mismatch in the NFL is a stretched even by MoGoBlog standards.

Was this during the scrimmage? Makes sense to have a full-contact scrimmage a week before the damn season when the guys are reportedly already beat up.

It is football camp. Do you suggest they don't hit at all until the season starts?

All teams have several live scrimmages, and do plenty of hitting drills like the Oklahoma drill, etc. Unfortunately injuries happen to every team. Hoping this one is false still.

You're being ridiculous.  It's football.  They need to practice.  And most of these types of lower leg injuries happen without contact anyway.  He's a WR, he needs to run routes.

And if it's that serious of an injury, it could have happened at any point.  Would you be just as pissed if this happened at a full contact practice two days ago?  Injures are part of the sport, chill out.

I think the bigger issue right now is roster management.  If he is hurt, we have two outside receivers in our team.  He wasn’t some all world receiver, but we needed to keep Kekoa Crawford. That was a bad move to let him get away if we had a shot to hang onto him.  Are DPJ and Collins going to play every snap?  We are one more injury away from having to split out Nick Eubanks.  We may have to convert some d-backs.  That should not happen.

People who gripe about a full practice a week before the game are... myopic. Teams have practices, some of those practices have hitting, and all teams scrimmage.

And if there is an injury (and this is just a rumor, but it's blowing up in the last half hour) that's going to happen occasionally. It happens, literally, to every team.

But if Black is hurt, that really, really stinks.

The whole grapevine thing is getting out of hand.  Someone made mention of something and your focus on it almost raises it to the level of fact.   I heard in MgoBlog that the team goes the entire preseason without contact practices.   Along that line.

I know this hard for a lot of you to understand but I’ll try.

First they just had a grueling fall camp where they hit a ton. Position battles should be won at this point. Having your ones in a full blown scrimmage a week before the game is absolutely stupid. It’s unnecessary. Let your backups and 3s go at. Why have you 1s hitting again? It’s the last day of camp!

Some of you will defend Jim at all costs but this is not a smart move. You go back to hitting on Monday or Tuesday as you prepare.

It's not hard for us to understand, you just don't really know what you're talking about. You're not a high level football coach. You simply don't have the standing to criticize the coaching style of a D-1 program. The idea that you somehow know better than Jim Harbaugh, Jim McElwain, Pep Hamilton, and Don Brown (or, for that matter, Nick Saban or Mark Dantonio or Les Miles or any other coach) is beyond absurd.

Your defense? A quote from Saquon Barkley.

And I'm calling you on it because the "Internet commentator who knows everything" trope is not a good look, and you aren't particularly good at it.

Even if true this isn’t going to make or break our season. Every team seems to lose a key contributor at some point. Nico Collins has all the talent in the world. He’s just gotta step up. Don’t forget we still have DPJ, Perry, Gentry, and McKeon. We aren’t dying for receiving options.

I know you are trying to be optimistic, but we really need Black.  Two elite WR is infinitely better than one (DPJ being the potential other one).  We need someone to take the top off the defense and Black is the only one who has shown that.  He's also our top receiver, so I don't see how any team losing their top receiver is a good thing, especially considering the offense we fielded last year.
