Per Steve Lorenz Twitter: Christian Turner emerging as 3rd RB?
Steve Lorenz posted a link on Twitter from Zack Shaw who speculates that Christian Turner might be the 3rd RB on the depth chart heading into the season. Looks to be turning heads in practice, with Runyan Jr giving him high praise.
This is the first time I’ve heard his name being mentioned. Of course, it’s all speculation at this point, but we’ve been waiting for a 3rd RB and with this latest news, he might be the guy. Also added 15 pounds of muscle while maintaining his explosiveness.
If someone could embed the link, that’d be appreciative.

Would be surprised if O'Maury wasn't 3rd running back to start the season - but not that shocked. Certainly has precedent, with the way Evans vaulted up the depth chart his freshman year.
I am hoping there is no NEED for our 3rd string running back at Notre Dame - unless it is "mop up" in the 4th quarter. That would be terrific!!!

I feel like RB3s get a lot of touches even in major games, am I wrong on that?
August 15th, 2018 at 12:52 PM ^
Anthony Thomas sure did in '97.
3rd string backs get touches in major games, but I wouldn't say "a lot" unless they're the hot hand

This is good news. But I'd like to see at least two good backup options. At RB, it's hard to find enough depth most of the time with injuries and all. Hopefully someone like Samuels will also step up to fill another spot.

Might as well post the full article, it's about the freshmen who are standing out so far according to Runyan Jr.: https://247sports.com/college/michigan/Article/Michigan-O-line-finding-footing-against-Wolverines-defense-120681716
TLDR: Turner, Hutchinson, and Mayfield have impressed Runyan

Most not have been Runyan, but I thought someone had Bell on that list too.

UMbig has mentioned Bell as a standout.

No redshirt?
August 15th, 2018 at 11:48 AM ^
I think homies can play in any four games and still red shirt per the new NCAA rule.
August 15th, 2018 at 11:57 AM ^
Homies?
August 15th, 2018 at 12:02 PM ^
You know, home slices.
August 15th, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
Bros?
August 15th, 2018 at 12:20 PM ^
Yeah, however many homies in the Freshman class, they can all redshirt even if they play in four games.

an acquaintance from one's town or neighborhood, or a member of one's peer group or gang.

So you are claiming to be a freshman on the Michigan football team? If not, you can't call the other freshman homies. It doesn't work like that.
August 15th, 2018 at 1:41 PM ^
no, that's not what he's claiming at all. he's not calling the freshman HIS homies he's ..... awww forget it. not worth explaining it

Looking forward to seeing a consistent downhill game whomever is carrying the rock!
August 15th, 2018 at 12:20 PM ^
3rd RB will probably be Samuels.
August 15th, 2018 at 12:28 PM ^
Don't expect to see much from any 3rd-string RB this year.
August 15th, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
I hope we are up big in every game and we see a lot of RB3, RB4, and FB action.
August 15th, 2018 at 12:54 PM ^
Three and four wide with running backs? Isn't that what happens when Georgia Tech or Air Force accidentally go with spread concepts, or are we thinking more along the lines of Kirk Ferentz, who often goes with the four TE set?
August 15th, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
This is a disaster—Turner's only a 3-star so it means our RB corps must be terrible, amirite?

I was generally unaware of this kid before now. He looks game-ready in his HS film. Anyone know what his senior stats were? They must have been great given how many long TD runs are shown on his film.
August 15th, 2018 at 1:45 PM ^
Generally unaware, but not fully unaware?

He played with and against many of the best high school football players/teams in the nation. His junior year he was in/shared the backfield with a senior who went to Florida State and a sophomore who is a 4****. It doesn't matter what his stats were...watch his film. His critics are right-he does not have world class speed but playing against the top kids in the country he is not getting run down from behind either...and there are likely a couple DBs out there who a year later are still wondering what that was that knocked them on their ass and kept on running.

His teammate was faster than him, but Turner is so good at breaking tackles. And is by no means slow. I really liked what I saw from his film, no matter how many stars he had.

Why is nobody talking about Berkley Edwards as the third back? He averaged 4.x yards a carry as a freshman at Minnesota before he transferred and got hurt.
August 15th, 2018 at 1:37 PM ^
The dude's already 23 years old, probably has gray hairs in his 'stache. Seriously, he seems more of a return guy and 5'9" guys not named Mike Hart don't generally see time in the backfield. Think Michigan took him as a grad transfer because of his brother.
August 15th, 2018 at 5:23 PM ^
Michigan took Edwards as a walk on grad transfer. Why wouldn't you?
August 15th, 2018 at 3:16 PM ^
Maybe because Edwards returned kicks for CMU last year, but couldn't crack the rotation at RB.

I thought it was interesting that when BTN came to practice to do the show on Monday, that they showed a graphic of key recruits and Turner was on the list despite higher ranked recruits being left off. Now I realize that wasn’t a coincidence and he probably did well when they were present.
August 15th, 2018 at 1:18 PM ^
Hopefully Christian will be like the NIU RB Michael "The Burner" Turner. He tore it up!
August 15th, 2018 at 1:30 PM ^
When do we see the Recruiting 2018 report on Haskins? Or, did I miss it?

Well, can he block?
Lotta guys can run. not all can run and block.
blocking=important.
