OT: G.O.A.T Actors
Hi everyone, I’m bored and I like hearing everyone’s opinions about random stuff, so here it goes.....
A few weeks ago I did GOAT Movies, then singers. I thought actors would be fun. So, who are your top 3? I may do an actress thread or more like this with different topics if everyone continues to enjoy these threads while we’re all trying to get through the offseason.
The criteria is....
1. They can play different type roles, meaning not just in funny movies...etc.
2. They have starred in movies for at least 10 years.
My 3 in order are 1. Tom Hanks. 2. Denzel. 3. DiCaprio
reminder... I am looking for GOATS not FAVORITE. Denzel would be only one on favorite list for me from what I chose for my GOAT list.
WAIT HOLD ON
No love for Robin Williams??
So he’s your 3rd? Good choice.
Forget about third, he can hop over Hanks and Denzel for first!
Simply a genius.
I gotta say, outta all the late celebrities, he’s gotta be one of the ones I’ve ended up missing the most. Didn’t think I would at the time, but he left a positive mark on all of our lives we sometimes even took for granted!
Was just thinking about him. He could put in a comedic performance for the ages, and when he got serious he could be amazing. Good Will Hunting gets all the love, but he IMO has the best guest star performance in the entire run of Law & Order SVU. His episode is incredibly powerful
Great list. Im so hyped for the equalizer 2
Same!! Honestly it is one of the few movies coming out this summer that I’m excited about.
And sicario 2
Sicario 2 is also a sequel I'm looking forward too. I just watched the first one about a month ago and was very impressed
Same here. The 1st Equalizer is one of my favorite Denzel movies.
Underrated and deserves consideration: Jake Gyllenhaal
Agree that he’s underrated. He is right around the top 15 imo.
Harvey Korman. He fully committed to every role.
Clint Eastwood's westerns were phenomenally well done.
A Fistful of Dollars, a Few Dollars More, & The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is the best trilogy ever.
Logged in on my phone to upvote this. The art of powerful communication through little dialog is lost. Clint’s Man With No Name is the pinnacle. One of those movies starts with 5-10 minutes of no words at all. Sublime.
That said, I think Unforgiven was his best. Heartbreak Ridge is also great.
Hang Em High, High Plains Drifter, Joe Kidd, the Outlaw Josey Wales...
Outlaw Josey Wales is the greatest western ever made....
Harvey Korman always knew when a harumph was appropriate.
Daniel Day-Lewis
Robert Redford??????
I've always thought Adrian Brody was very underrated. Not sure why he doesn't get more movie roles.
Chris Pratt would be good if he didn't keep starring in shitty movies.
Denzel is by far my favorite person to watch on the silver screen. And since the ladies are getting very little mention, I really like Jodie Foster as well.
Pratt seems to be getting the Tom Cruise treatment. Good looking guy that is blasted with blockbuster action flicks with price tags that are hard to resist, even if his acting chops are a tier above the work being offered.
It's my fervent belief that Chris Pratt simply plays one of his Parks and Rec alter egos in each film he's in. I really wouldn't consider him a strong actor.
Not sure if he would be a strong dramatic actor, but his comedic delivery is impeccable. He's like a less annoying Seth Rogan with more range and less weed.
Steve McQueen. I know, user name checks out.
Michael Keaton. Batman. Ray Croc. Mr. Mom. Birdman.
Jack Nicholson
Dustin Hoffman.
DeNiro, DiCaprio, not sure on a 3rd
F#&# DeNiro!
1. Daniel Day-Lewis
2. Heath Ledger
3. Denzel
Honorable Mentions:
DiCaprio
McConaughey
Leo, Brad, and Matt.
Duvall, Hopkins, Washington.
Very difficult. There's A LOT of great actors out there. My top 3 (not in order): Denzel Washington, DiCaprio, and Tom Hardy
Just off the top of my head, a few actors who have done a bit of everything:
Dennis Haysbert
Hugh Laurie
Leslie Nielsen, who had pretty much been exclusively a dramatic actor before Airplane!
There are plenty of others, many of them having been named here already.
Peter Sellers is another favorite actor who fully committed to the roles he was cast:
Does your dog bite?
The scenes with Cato are hysterical and could never be made today.
Anthony Hopkins
Ryan Gosling
Liam Neeson
Dont forget about Mel Gibson. He's a douche but the man can act.
Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor alive, and it's not even close. John Cazale was the greatest of his era, and I'll cut anyone who says otherwise. For my controversial take, I will say that the best comedic actor ever was John Candy.
Uncle Buck was great and Who’s Harry Crumb was a master piece.
His playing off Steve Martin in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is near-perfect.
1) Gary Oldham (from Rastafarian to Dracula to Churchill)
2) Christian Bale (from American Psycho to American Hustle to boxer/trainer)
3) Tom Hanks (from Forrest Gump to Philadelphia to Wilson's best friend)
I gotta say, I don't know if it was the intent, but your username is a halff of a fucking earworm. I'm gonna be singing that shit the rest of the night.
Can't believe it took me this long to get to Bale. Completely agree with that one.
Great nominees mentioned above
Daniel Day Lewis
Denzel Washington
Philip Seymour Hoffman << fantastic range, always good
Rod Steiger is an underrated name from the 50s 60s (comedy, musicals, dramas (wins Kevin Bacon award)
Elizabeth Taylor, Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy (Captains Courageous, listen to DVD while driving, the script was written when radio stories were strong. CGI what??)
1a: Hayden Christensen
1b: Hayden Christensen
2: Adam Sandler
3: Kristin Stewart
All three have impressive bodies of work, or at least one has an impressive body, but all are misunderstood in Hollywood for their refusal to take the easy path to stardom. Craft before commercial is the common theme for these thespians.
There is no way you could say with a straight face that "Craft before Commercial" applies to Adam Sandler.
I'm amazed that no one has mentioned Philip Seymour Hoffman. Look at the variety of the roles he played. Compare Capote to Doubt to Charlie Wilson's War to Boogie Nights.
My list is:
1) Daniel Day Lewis
2) Philip Seymour Hoffman
3) Meryl Streep
Even though you did say "Actors" you left your pronouns non-gender-specific, so I figured actresses should be fair game too.
Never forget Dusty from 'Twister' and Sandy Lyle from 'Along Came Polly'.
"Let it rain!"
