Rose Bowl Open Thread
The Granddaddy of them all! The 100th Rose Bowl. Number 4 Michigan State vs. Number 5 Stanford. Who are you guys taking in this game and why? I like Stanford so I wouldn't mind to see them win. I do think the perception of the Big Ten is somewhat important, but I also don't think the Big Ten being that great matters a whole lot. I'm cheering for neither team though. I am just hoping for a good quality game.
The line favors Stanford by 5.5 points. Michigan State has the best defense in the country. Stanford has one of the best ground and pound teams in the country.
F/+ Projection: Stanford 20, Michigan State 11

When you win every game by 10+ isn't it kind of hard to say luck was that big of a factor?

Well that dropped pick is now a game changing play. Awesome.

That was an ugly play.

Running east and west against Stanford is not a good strategy. Hopefully they keep that up.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:00 PM ^
That was uncatchable.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:01 PM ^
Bad call.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:01 PM ^
Yeah, that was catchable.

It's funny watching a B1G team play a Pac-12 team and wanting oh so badly for the Pac-12 team to murder a conference bretheren.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:01 PM ^
Calvin Johnson on a trampoline wouldn't have a chance on that.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:01 PM ^
Uncatchable for sure
January 1st, 2014 at 6:01 PM ^
Really calling pass interference? That ball was 10 feet over his head.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:02 PM ^
That pass was even too high for Tacopants
January 1st, 2014 at 6:01 PM ^
Bailed out by that call
January 1st, 2014 at 6:02 PM ^
Refs hand Sparty 4 points there. Terrible call.

Dropped pick and an awful call give MSU 7 points. Bullshit.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:02 PM ^
Important drive there, a huge break with that INT deflection but not they are settled. p.s. word out Dantonio is getting PAYEEED....new contract to put him top 3 in Big 10. Which means $4M annual.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:04 PM ^
That won't stop him from leaving if he were to want to. I don't think he will leave, but giving a college coach an extension means little to nothing at this point.

Does Sparty lead the nation in TDs scored after dropped interceptions? Unreal the bullshit luck they've had.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:06 PM ^
Luck eventually runs out.
Found that out after 2011 ended.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:13 PM ^
Well, their luck is going on four years and counting...
January 1st, 2014 at 6:32 PM ^
state in 2012-
- 7-6
- winless in B1G play at home
- lost to Michigan without giving up a TD
The luck that season was that they made a bowl game.

attn: hoke, borges, funk....please take note of stanfords shredding of MSU today as stanford epitomizes the power / pro-style O you so aspire to and droool over. note their personnel, technique, and development and the "execution" by many 3 and 4 star recruits. stanford actually has multiple TEs and FBs on roster who know how to run block and pass pro. and note how stanfords starting 5 and their backups consist of basically the same guys you recruited at OL....their technique and cohesiveness and toughness are the goal, or at least should be, for future UM O lines....apparently you guys have brought in the appropriate recruits (though i do not beleive you have enough competent OT prospects on roster unless dawson can bump to OT but just my opinion) according to most so coach em up fellas, you cannot run the desired pro style O without dominant OL, its just not possible. spread schemes offer more room for error and margin for success than pro style.....but IF you can successfully recruit to and execute a pro style O at elite level, then its pretty evident by performances of bama and stanford, etc. that those offenses can dominate. also better hope you somehow acquire a FB and TE who excel at blocking (walkon and 225lb FBs and pass catching TEs aside) while also being versatile enough players to allow you to remain multiple and unpredictable from scheme perspective. so coaches please take note of stanfords personnel and indentity and their technique and execution - and then please honestly do some serious self evaluation. if you cannot even remotely approach this level of competentcy / proficiency in 2014 then please do not try....it will result in further embarassment like 2013....wait until 2015 if necessry and live and die with gardner and a more spread out look in 2014. and to lesser extent you can also look towards MSU though theyre far from ideal pro style offense - just a very solid, technically sound football team who wins and loses with their D and running game. bottom line, match personnel to scheme and actually coach....dont just pray and foolishly think the mighty will of hoke and funk /borges will allow you to efficiently run power O. drop the ego, embrace self evaluation and earn your salaries fellas....you dont yet have 4-5 years of experienced prostyle recruits, you have rich rod scraps and some decent young talent so coach em up and play to your strengths

There must be some sort of mistake on their webpage. They show offensive line starters as being a Freshman, two Sophomores and two Juniors. That cannot possibly be true as I've been told repeatidly this year that the ONLY way you can even hope to reasonably competent on the O Line is to have five seniors and maybe then you'll struggle if they're not five fifth year seniors.
Why do you think Stanford lied about their age?
January 1st, 2014 at 6:24 PM ^
That is a more effective argument I think.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:27 PM ^
That must be a lie too. Cant possibly be true - only players entering their fourth or fifth year in the program can be expected to block people.
Three sophomores on the line wining the MNC? That's rich.

a new MGo rule.....everytime a person says the phrase "manball" they lose 100 points...
That word makes me gag.
January 1st, 2014 at 6:15 PM ^
Only becasue we can't do it
January 1st, 2014 at 6:24 PM ^
I would just prefer we be able to watch and talk about other bowl games without bringing everything back to our shit sandwich offense. We get it everyone! we are terrible on offense. There is no need to mention how bad we are after every singe positive play that any other team makes. It makes these game threads a pain in the ass to read.
/end rant

No matter how much I look at the TV screen, I still have a hard time comprehending that Sparty is in the Rose Bowl. It's just too weird.
And Stanford has got to be the most surprising program the last few years. I thought losing Harbaugh and Andrew Luck would make that program go back to nothing. But they're playing in the Rose Bowl every year now....like Michigan used to. *sigh*

Nice discipline by Sparty on special teams, once the returner broke contain that would have been a 40 yard return vs UM. Sparty dude stayed in his lane.
Team is just well coached, even if they get "luck" or whatever every so often. Stanford has looked a bit better thus far but there is not much spread between these 2 teams. I also am getting a kick out of the peeps who say "UM look at how Stanford is built" or "UM look at how Stanford does this"... folks MSU is built in Stanford's mold. lol.
