Brendan Gibbons Appreciation Thread
I just noticed that in the aftermath of the game on Saturday there wasn't an appreciation thread for Brendan Gibbons. Despite his one shaky game at Penn State, Gibbons has been solid for the past two years. Gibbons drilled a 44 yarder on Saturday to extend the game and also made another field goal in 2OT to extend the game, in addition to his two other field goals on the day. Gibbons holds the record at Michigan for the most consecutive Field Goals and PATs made. Gibbons has drastically improved over his four years of playing and is now one of the best kickers in the Big Ten. Brendan Gibbons has improved the happiness of all of us with his many clutch kicks, including on Saturday. Brendan Gibbons, we appreciate you. Go Blue!

I love me some brunette girls, but this whole "appreciation thread" shit is getting out of hand.

If we depreciate something does Dave Brandon get to write it off on his taxes?
November 20th, 2013 at 1:00 PM ^
I would upvote FannMan for his well-conceived "depreciation" snark if I could. And I agree wholeheartedly with the thought behind it.
November 20th, 2013 at 10:48 AM ^
Every thread bitches about the OC, so in a way they are all depreciation threads. I doubt anyone would say that mgoblog has a positive tone lately.
November 19th, 2013 at 9:56 PM ^
While I agree the appreciation threads may be getting out of hand, I think Brendan Gibbons is truly deserving of one.

LSAClassof2000, I read your tweet.
I appareciate you :[

Thanks indeed.
To be fair to this thread, GIbbons deserves a lot of appreciation from this fanbase for working to improve his game by literal leaps and bounds through his time here to a point where he is looked to and relied on to be a difference-maker on this team. When people have confidence in you as this teams had in Gibbons this past Saturday, you're definitely doing it right.

I'm very appreciative that Al Borges has absolutely NOTHING to do with our FG team!
Go Blue!

The deleted comment was phrased poorly, but I think the substance is pretty relevant. Though he wasn't charged, just accused. I find it hard to root for the guy (and Lewan) after I read the police report. And an appreciation thread for him is a little gross.
November 19th, 2013 at 11:06 PM ^
You should start a no-appreciation thread!
November 19th, 2013 at 11:07 PM ^
Had the post said "there are some issues here I'm uncomfortable with", it would have been fine and stayed. That's not what it said, though, and personally insulting student athletes just isn't allowed on the site. Also a reminder, this wasn't hashed out in court or anything like that: it's a bad situation with little publicly available information and (from what I've seen) lacks anything definitive either way.
November 19th, 2013 at 11:16 PM ^
The police reports make me queasy, more about how we as a society treat rape accusers than anything else. As that was pretty clearly on the woman's mind when you read the part where she decides not to press charges. That societal problem (and the statistics) leads me to tend to believe the woman, absent a trial.
Her account rings true, and the Lewan part seems pretty well verified. And his part is really gross.
So I was happy for the other guys on the team, but less them. And especially for the other 10 guys on the FG team.

There's a fundamental difference between your posts and the one that's no longer around, which is all I was trying to say. The report is the report and it's in the public sphere, but even in situations where something is proven true about a Michigan athlete we try to keep the personal attacks off the board, and we certainly don't have that with Gibbons.
November 19th, 2013 at 11:26 PM ^
Yeah, I wasn't complaining about the moderating decision, which is why I included the phrased poorly thing. I just have a hard time rooting for Gibbons or appreciating him.
November 19th, 2013 at 11:50 PM ^
I agree. I enjoy his contribution to the football team, but that's about it.
November 20th, 2013 at 12:54 AM ^
This is my sentiment, as well. And it'd be nice if people would stop with the "brunette girls" thing.

If your initial thought is that I'm objecting to the general objectification of brunette woman, I'm not really sure what to tell you.
November 20th, 2013 at 8:01 AM ^
Oh yeah, or maybe she just re-thought her accusations made after talking to her boyfriend. Also the cuddling was left out, as was a previously hook up. Or the numerous parts of the report which make zero sense if you knew more of the situation... the bed part, is she 3 ft. 5 in tall or is he 9 ft. 6 in? It doesn't add up.

Hey gang....come to MY thread....the official Gibbon's appreciation thread. It's way, way cooler than this dumb old thread and brand new!
Sadly my official Gibbons appreciation thread was deleted.

The other ones are arguably overlapping, but the one where we get to appreciate actual gibbons has returned. That would be the unique one and I apologize for the earlier action. Blame it on being weary from storm work.

It was official.

this will go down as a tragic day in mgoblog history. THE THREAD WAS OFFICIAL!
what is next? UFR removed because of salty language? Game Preview pulled down because score prediction was impossible to reach?
November 20th, 2013 at 2:14 PM ^
One point, that's the only score that it is not possible to reach. Literally everything else is possible, unlikely... sure.

Gibbons played amazingly well. I do want to shine light on the fact that this is not the first time such a kick has been made though, as Brian is claiming, if you are willing to count games from the NFL.
Broncos vs. Bills in 2009. I am having trouble finding video of it, but here is a game recap: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8022cb8d/article/elam-saves-broncos-bills-everett-suffers-serious-injury
"The Broncos were out of timeouts when Jay Cutler hit Javon Walker for an 11-yard catch with 14 seconds left, leading to a mad scramble onto the field. Broncos holder Todd Sauerbrun got the ball down with 1 second remaining."
That said, excellently executed here as well!
