Meta: Who are Mgoblog readers?

Submitted by Erik_in_Dayton on

While making a rude joke about mGrowOld's age yesterday*, I found myself wondering about the demographics of the blog.  I also wondered about this in the last day or two when a number of people said they were at Michigan in the late part of the last decade, which struck me as not too long ago to have still been in college...So, do we have information on the age, sex, place of residence, school (Michigan or other), hand orientation (left, right, amphibious), preferred pagan god, etc. of the average Mgoblog reader?  I vaguely remember something that Brian posted saying that we're a bunch of men, but I don't recall much beyond that.

EDIT: See Seth's post below.  One snapshot of the readership showed us to be, speaking very generally, a group of 30-something Eurasian men.  We were reasonably diverse in terms of age, race, income, and having or not having kids.  In terms of gender, we were...not so balanced.

*If it makes you feel better, mGrowOld, you have a lovely wife, while I am left in the same place as Mexican Milhouse.

I never knew my birth parents. There was a car accident. My birth mother was incinerated, and I only survived because her smoking carcass had formed a protective cocoon of slaughtered human effluence. A Belgian man and his fifteen year-old love slave were looting the accident scene, and came across a blood soaked baby, moi. They raised me to be evil. You know, that old chestnut.

Very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Some times he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it.

I went to Seth's link at Quantcast, and see the data. A few more observations.

  1. More "Asians" than caucasians in the demographics. Not sure that would be classed "Eurasian." And also, "Asian" is a pretty broad category.
  2. Noticed that the income distribution is heavily weighted above $150k. Well heeled group!
  3. Noticed there are very few members under 18. Would have expected a few more.

All in all, very interesting data, as to who the mgoreader is comprised of.

I'm always curious where exactly they get their demographic data, and how much of it is direct data (based on information from profiles they correlate to IP addresses), and how much of it is derived, based on IP address relationship to ZIP, and demographics (particularly income data) based on the ZIP.

Turns out you are right in a sense.  I was using it to mean "people from (or descended from people from) Europe or Asia," but it turns out that, per Wikipedia, a Eurasian is a person who is of mixed Euro-Asian heritage...I still like my version of it, and I don't think anyone self-identifies as "Eurasian," so I'm going to keep it.

Male

Married first time for 8 years; second time for 22 years now; no kids.

Almost 54 years old

Work at large international computer company in technical sales.

Born in Redford Township (inside Inkster, 7 Mile, Beech and Grand River trapezoid)

BA and MBA from ... (gulp) ... Michigan State**

(Huge Michigan fan from well before deciding on college.  Applied and accepted to Michigan, but I simply did not have the extra money required.  I did what I had to do.)

Live in Tucson, AZ ... because wife of 22 years loves hot sunshine.  I like her.  Ergo ...

** My freshman year was a living hell because I was too stupid to keep my mouth shut about my football allegiance.  I never wavered in my dedication to Meeechigan Football.  I did, however, learn to keep my mouth shut.

48 yr old female, graduated with an AB in Communications, Mich. Wrote for the Daily, Arts section, became an advertising copywriter on Anheuser Busch and McDonald's. Now semi-retired with my own business/home with kids. Brother, uncle, nephews went to Michigan. Went to every game as a student, then a funny thing happened. Every game I attended thereafter, we lost. To Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Penn State - over the course of the last 25 years, we lost every game I was at.

I was at the Toledo game.

So when I went to the Ohio State game in 2011, I was scared. But when we won in the last seconds, I realized the curse was now done. At least for regular season games. Because then i went to the bowl game last year.

I apologize for the pain I've caused.
