I bet this one's in the snow too.
...starring Alexi Lalas and Jared Borgetti to get you started...
I feel the hate flowing already.
¡Viva México!
cojones.
I want this one bad...to have the US go down there and win one that really counts for something is on my sports bucket list (of things I have absolutely no control over)
That said, I think Mexico wins unfortunately...
I'm not a big soccer fan, but I'm trying to get into it and I'm pretty excited for tonight's game. Can someone explain to me why Tim Howard and Landon Donovan aren't on the team? Are they hurt, or stuck in Europe, or just not playing for the Nats anymore?
Back injury....Donovon is on a sabbatical, no idea if he will ever play for the MNT again, but you should expect Howard back once he is healed up.
Thank you sir.
and very disappointed in all of this... Lando crushes on Mexico and revels in it. He is certainly missed.
In case you don't know what we are up against in the Azteca. I was actually at this game as well, up in the American section... I have also been to the horseshoe several times, but Azteca and the fans make OSU fans seem like baby chicks.

Our fullbacks are probably going to get TOASTED by Mexico's wingers.
Brad Guzan is the X-factor tonight, just like Howard was in August. If he does what Victor Valdes did against France today (if you did not see this, I emplore you to watch the highlights. he was ethereal), then we have a chance for a draw.
was on another level. Although I really wonder how much that last save on the Evra(?) header was luck vs. skill.
Oh good. A new centerback pairing. Against Mexico. In the Azteca.
Did Goodson come up injured or something? Because otherwise, that's a really strange call. Does Besler even have a cap?
At least it makes sense why he's starting and is not a crazy, "hey, why play the same backline two games in a row?" move by Klinnsy. Which was my first guess.
I checked. Besler has one start. In a friendly this January against Canada. Not good.
Yeah, you may think you can't call Boca in and have him ride pine because he's the captain, but our centerbacks tonight have two competitive caps between them. Maybe it'll work. But it's not giving me a bunch of confidence.

where the back line has not terrified me...However, this terrifies me more than usual

If they can just have a solid first 15 to settle in, I'll feel better. Mexico's been poor and are going to come out gangbusters to try to get an early lead. If the US can hold up early , or even steal a goal on the break, that crowd will turn on El Tri faster than normal, given their recent struggles.

To be a little fair to us, the Mexican team has only lost like 11 games in the entire history of Azteca, so everyone get their ass kicked there

Yes, I expect to dominate this game the same way we dominate the puny Russians in hockey.

Jesus, Besler is getting worked like a speed bag so far. Maybe giving a guy with 1 cap in a friendly a spot in the First XI against Mexico in Azteca wasn't so brilliant a ploy Jurgen?

We gonna die if this continues like it has...
Then again, we were always gonna die.

Mexico loves to throw people into the attack... but they are nororiously poor at disciplined defending. They play with so much confidence at home, we just need to find that counter.

Survived. 45 minutes to go. Mexico had chances, but they've all been half chances. And we may have had the best chance of the half in that header off the corner that Altidore couldn't quite tuck in.

Ah, that's what I get for watching the game on a split computer screen with the sound off.

Last 10 minutes of the half showed some promise. Hopefully the crowd gets restless and pissed if we can keep them off the scoreboard for the next 15 or so, and we can actually get a few more chances. I think defending has been solid so far, not great, but solid. Hopefully Beas plays without worry still, despite the yellow.

Edu needs to stop giving the ball away cheaply just beyond the 18

Jermaine Jones picked up an injury in the snow bowl. Probably why he didn't make the trip to Azteca. We could've used him.

The longer they hold Mexico off, the more likely we are to get a flukey scoring chance...keep on keeping on boys.

It's wierd watching our centerbacks taking all the corner kicks. They're the tall specialists at winning the aerial battles, they should be the ones trying to head them all in. Beasley had 1 and Gomez had 3, but our CBs have taken 6 including the last 5.
March 27th, 2013 at 12:08 AM ^
That should have been a PK for Mexico but I can't pretend to be sorry it's not. I've seen too much foul play from Mexico in the past to feel bad for them when the ref makes a poor decision against them.

wow - US *very* lucky that penalty wasn't called...

Wow. Lucky. That's got to be Guzan's ball

haven't seen this many corners since DBs workout day at the NFL Combine
