Coaches Poll: UM #19
September 4th, 2012 at 12:45 PM ^
I'm surprised to see Boise St still in the poll at #25.
September 4th, 2012 at 12:54 PM ^
Given that it's early in the season I think people a) still haven't figured out that both MSU and Boise are overrated to some degree and b) people don't know exactly who else to vote for.
I think Boises gonna be like a 9-3 MWC team and State's probably going to be an 8-4 B1G team
September 4th, 2012 at 12:49 PM ^
This is where they should have started, #8 was silly. Last year was a great year but we had a great number of fortunate bounces. We will be fine but not #8.
September 4th, 2012 at 1:09 PM ^
We would be out of the polls if we started at #19.
September 4th, 2012 at 1:44 PM ^
but who cares anyway? The only poll that matters is the one before the bowl games and then again right after. Alabama wouldn't have moved to #1 if we started at 19 either... it's really quite irrelavent.
September 4th, 2012 at 12:52 PM ^
Sounds about right.
September 4th, 2012 at 12:54 PM ^
We're (a significant contributing factor in a different team becoming) number one! We're (holy shit did you see what Alabama did to our D-line no wonder they're) number one!
September 4th, 2012 at 12:56 PM ^
This is about right. Dont lose another game until B1G play and they should be fine. If they are 6-1 going into the game against Nebraska, they will win the Legends.
September 4th, 2012 at 1:13 PM ^
Yes, we need to remember this is a season and that the media hype of a blow-out will give way to the typical media line of what is a team's "Body of Work" and "late season Michigan" versus "early season" Michigan.
Media builds you up, tears you down, then discusses the "underdog comeback".

Michael Poll I made up last night
1 Bama (win against top 10)
2 USC
3 LSU
4 Oregon (highly convincing win)
5 FSU (highly convincing win)
6 Oklahoma (struggled to score for most of the game)
7 Georgia
8 Arkansas
9 SC (ranked those 3 by recent gameplay)
10 Michigan State (unconvincing win, but beat a ranked opponent)
11 West Virginia (soundly beat a cupcake, who also scored a lot on them)
12 Clemson (beat a psudo ranked Auburn)
13 Virginia Tech
14 Nebraska (most convincing win in the B1G)
15 Wisconsin (got passed a little after I reranked the B1G)
16 Texas (push)
17 Ohio
18 Oklahoma State (huge blowout against tiny opponent)
19 Michigan (above didn't-play TCU)
20 TCU (didn't play)
21 Louisville (beat an SEC team, but it was just Kentucky)
22 Kstate (convincing win)
23 Stanford (close scrape)
24 BYU/ND (couldn't decide but gave the opponent edge in Wazzo over Navy)
25 Florida (lol)

MSU is not the 11th best team. There QB is awful and cannot do anything. He looked like Steven Threet against Boise State.
Where do people think Michigan would have been ranked if they beat Bama. I say 4, FWIW.
September 4th, 2012 at 1:06 PM ^
Well we didn't beat them, or come close. So it doesn't really matter

The polls unwritten law is that unbeatens get ranked higher.
That said, I think Michigan is better than Clemson, South Carolina, Nebraska, Ok St, and Virgina Tech.
I think we should be around 14 an will move into top ten if we beat MSU/Neb and beat Wisc in the B1G championship.
September 4th, 2012 at 1:37 PM ^
That's kind of a given, no? If we beat the rest of the teams on our schedule, we'll be in the top 10? Shocking analysis is shocking.

September 4th, 2012 at 10:03 PM ^
Yeah, I agree. They have the potential to be a good team this season, but beating a recovering PSU team shouldn't put you anywhere higher than 22, in my opinon.
September 4th, 2012 at 1:51 PM ^
This is fair, I think. I believe that there is enough that we can walk away with even after the game on Saturday that says that we belong on this list. It is interesting to note that the average ranking of a Big Ten team in this poll fell two spots from about 12 to 14 (compared to an average drop of only one spot of ranked Big Ten teams in the AP poll). That doesn't mean a whole lot right now, but I have wondered if that is more or less the range we will inhabit if we do in fact go 9-3 (i.e., 9-2 the rest of the way). Would that be a 12-14-ish performance going into a possible BTCG?
September 4th, 2012 at 2:19 PM ^
I do believe this is where we belong right now.. We did not belong in the top 10 ten (YET) or deserving of a first place vote. When all is said and done and we beat on the Big Ten then top 10 here we come...
September 4th, 2012 at 2:22 PM ^
I agree that UM should be around #20 but I disagree with dropping them 11 spots for losing to a team that has now vaulted to #1 with a majority of the first place votes.
I will be VERY interested to see what happens to good SEC teams (e.g. Arkansas) who get taken behind the woodshed by Bama this season. Will they suffer such a precipitous drop as UM? Survey says: not likely.
September 4th, 2012 at 6:53 PM ^
it was the manner in which we lost - we could not have looked worse on a national stage, particularly scheme/QB play and looking completely outmanned.
19 to 25 range sounds about right, and probably a realistic bracket where we should've been going into the game.
September 4th, 2012 at 3:04 PM ^
Granted that Alabama is a phenomenal team, however, I don't think Michigan looks like a good Michigan team based on how our guys played. #19 may even be too high a ranking.

Hey, did you know they got new scoreboards?
September 4th, 2012 at 9:12 PM ^
"Turned it over as much as they did"
I think that part is backwards. MSU had several more turnovers than BSU did, including one before the half iirc in BSU's red zone. BSU only put up 3 points on their own (offensively), so it should actually be that Boise is really lucky that MSU turned it over as much as they did because that's the only reason they were in it. It could have otherwise been an MSU blowout and I HATE to imagine the slurping we'd be hearing if that happened.

I'm on board with this. Finish strong, all polls and B.S. media crap will align itself. To hell with bandwagon jumpers (on or off) and Notre Dame.
September 4th, 2012 at 7:40 PM ^
This is a good spot. About where I thought we would be following the loss to Alabama. Perhaps we are better than some of the teams in front of us, but we have the rest of the season to prove that. It's why the games are played.
Bring on Air Force. Is it Saturday yet?
September 4th, 2012 at 8:02 PM ^
Polls don't matter.
The goal here is to win the B1G Championship and beat ohio.
This Is MICHIGAN.
September 4th, 2012 at 10:28 PM ^
I can live with that.
September 5th, 2012 at 5:44 AM ^
Notre Dame game becomes crucial. We either start 3-1, or 2-2 and fall out of the top 25. That can be a tough road back.

so that the Cowboy Classic game could generate maximum dollars for ABC and the SEC and B1G.
I like where we're at in the rankings now.
Just win and everything will take care of itself.
