Scouting Report: Derrick Green
This morning I posted a full scouting report on Richmond (VA) Hermitage tailback Derrick Green. This will probably be my last scouting report for a class of 2013 kid, unless some new offers emerge for the class. Most people expect our last spot(s) to be taken by Green and/or LaQuon Treadwell, although I'm not confident we'll get both. In the coming weeks, I'll probably move on to 2014 kids.
Anyway, Green is a very solid running back. I don't think he's the top running back in the nation like Rivals does, but I can't argue too much with the sites who think he's among the top six or seven guys.
Have you seen him play live?
No he just evaluates kids over the internet.
OK so he claims he went to a 7-on-7 camp to evaluate him. Which would be like... his first evaluation done in person. You are also buying into what he is saying (that he was there) without any pics or video to prove it. He also claims he coaches football but spends all day on Mgoblog and his website.
I could go on...
Why the anger and putdowns? Even if what you are saying is true, and I don't think it is, but just for the sake of argument: so?
Let me try to put this into an analogy:
Let's say you visited a website hosted by a financial advisor named Brian, who himself was a fully licensed broker. The website is very well run and it is obvious Brian knows what he is talking about. Brian starts up his own message board and a man, Mark begins posting investment advice. Mark seems to know what he is talking about, and claims to be a licensed broker himself. He posts links to his site, with helpful investment tips. One day everyone finds out that Mark doesn't even have an office and most likely is not the trader / investor he claims to be.
Shouldn't people be skeptical of listening to "Mark" in the future?
That is the message I am trying to bring here. Don't listen to "Mark" - he's not what he appears to be.

You mean I've been doing that BACKWARDS this whole time?!?!
posts pictures of college chicks every third time, that has to a have some sway.
That's a pretty bold statement Mr Rager. Do you have any proof to back it up? The reason I ask is because I used to recruit for Michigan (91-94 under Bob Chmiel) here in Northern Ohio and I like Magnus, I coached some High School football(again, back in the 90's) and nothing Magnus has ever posted made me question his background claims in the least.
Whenever you coached high school football - would you have 4-5 hours a day to post blog entries? I know the answer to this question is "there weren't blogs back in the 90's", but I have a hard time believing any man with a real job can blog so much.
My HS coach had a decent amount of time during the day to do whatever he wanted.
Most HS coaches I know are either PE teachers or some kind of Shop / Tech Ed teacher. So... Yeah, they have at leaast 4-5 hours to banter on the interweb.

Magnus' birth certificate? I mean the long form birth certificate, not the faky-looking kind you can buy in La Paz for a peso. Magnus probably isn't even an American! How could he know anything about football if he is not even a Murrricccannn! The fact that Magnus is one of the top posters on this blog and his opinion is generally respected by many readers is a sham, we have all been duped by an . . . [deep breath and stifled sob] . . . anonymous Internet avatar without supporting credentials!

To answer your questions, no blogging for me in th 90s for me and I was an assistant coach (offense) so my time committment was obviously less than the head coach.
FWIW - I am a VP of Sales & Marketing for a farily large firm and I post a lot too. Just now I took a meeting and came back to my computer to see if you responded and you did (thank you) so I'm taking a few minutes to write back. And when I'm done I'll go back to my VP thing and periodically check the board to see if anything interesting was posted or said.
I wouldnt necessarily connect the dots that just because somebody posts a lot they don't have a job that occupies a lot of time. Mine does and Im able to do both.

We've put up with your schtick, despite your consistant hatering. But you need to dial it back to 11, especially when it comes to questioning the integrity of other posters and bloggers. It gets old, and I don't feel like constantly refereeing pissing matches.
I've cut back a lot on posting at mgoblog, & am mostly content to just read what others have posted. I get tired of the snarkiness and lack of civility. It is easier to just read good content when it comes up. Thanks for pointing this out.

Dude, Rager.... be careful going after Magnus. He's kinda tough.... I saw him bench like 500 lbs on youtube.
My advice... Check yo-self before you wreck yo-self.
I would never have acted on "Brian's" advice in the first place, so the SHOCKING revelation that an internet user was less than he claimed to be would have little impact on my life, or feelings.
This is purely entertainment... financial advice is not. Bad analogy.
If I believe Magnus and it turns out he is making it up (or something).... so what??

Are you trying to tell me that my knowledge of a Cover 2 defense and evaluations of high school athletes that may or may not attend Michigan has NO bearing on my 401k nor my financial future?!?!
No, only the Tampa-2 and the West coast version of the spread does as it allows for adequate dispersion of assets.

If you make no distinction between the level of scrutiny you give your financial investments and the level of scrutiny given to a guy who posts recruit evaluations completely for free and for entertainment purposes, then I'm not interested in taking advice from you.
And since when has Magnus made a claim on the level of presenting himself as a licensed broker, which would be a felony were he to do so?

Magnus "adding value" to this site is an opinion. Ttry keeping that in mind when you refer to someone as a "dick", because one person doesn't an argument make.
Brian is not a fully licensed broker either. No quals, just dudes with opinions. Value their thoughts or don't - your call.
He likes to justify the money he spends on paysites by ragging on free material.

Maybe Mr. Rager = Mike Farrell?

Honestly, I'd be willing to bet that he is somehow affiliated with Rivals. Without looking into his posting history, I recall him fairly frequently telling people that a Rivals subscription is worth the money, and he seems to like to rip on the qualifications of Magnus/Thunder and Aquaman/Tremendous for giving us free info.
Of guys who just see players on the internet. That makes much more sense.
bashing him. Who's worse?
Also, way to call him a liar.
Yes.
Honest question: do 7-on-7's really provide an adequate guage of talent? Especially at RB?
give you an idea of route running out of backfield, hands to some degree, moves/footwork when out of pads
but yeah i don't think 7-7s provide a huge amount of info on rbs, especially a bruiser like Green
They're just a part of the puzzle. You can gauge some athletic aspects (speed, catching ability, etc.). You obviously can't gauge breaking tackles, blocking, etc.
very careful judgement he made about Green by noting that he only saw him in a 7 x 7 context. That's all I've got to offer on this subject, but it might mean something.

it's called disclosure. Magnus was trying to frame his commentary properly so readers can take the information with however many grains of salt they choose.
I've been watching football for about 44 years. I know what I see, but can't always put it into words or understand the root causes like QB mechanics. I appreciate the analysis...I don't take it as gospel or build my life around it. Holy crap, evaluating recruits is not an exact science.
Rager's diatribe is immature and petty.
I don't always agree with Magnus' opinions but:
- I respect that he offers opinions that aren't always with the grain.
- He isn't suggesting that I "invest" in his opinions. Rager's anology is ridiculous.
- His contribution to the blog is significantly greater than mine.
Attacking someone for wasting your time because their opinion does not measure up to a standard you established for what content should be on a free website while contributing nothing of value yourself is cowardly.
After I made all those bets on player's draft status based on these assessments? Damn, now you tell me. Right after I was finally recovering from all that money I put on Rich Rod stock off of Brian's advice.
I'm taking my Hoke/Mattison stock and sell, Sell, SELL!
- Politics
- Religion
- Rich Rod
So it's ok to talk about Fight Club now? Good!
I was totally blown away by how he is the same guy!
/Mindblown!

Mr. Rager has some sort of stake in how Rivals operates. He continues to put down Tremendous and now Magnus with brash assertions and then will later claim how good his subscription to Rivals is. Look at his post page, about 2/3 of the last 3 pages have to do with this. I'm starting to think you do nothing all day but post on MGoBlog and do some menial work for Rivals.
By the way, I coach too, and I find time to post on here. Being a high school coach myself, I'm not exactly looking at game film, running practice, recruiting, etc. all day, especially as an assistant, so it's not exactly impossible to find times to post on here.
You had the mental capacity to say that you have time to post on here even with a coaching job. Congratulations. Now, would you have time to write ~5 blog entries a day, post on here more than you do, and still be a coach? THAT was the point and you COMPLETELY missed it.
BTW I have nothing to do with Rivals or The Wolverine - I just think it's good info.
