Quick point of contention - Michigan was 9-0-3 in 1992, not 9-3.  His overall record was 44-13-3.  Not sure that really changes your point, though.

02/02/2013 - 10:16am Rules are meant to be broken!

Rules are meant to be broken! This is a big game. We may want to let this one slide

01/23/2013 - 1:11pm It would be more meaningful

It would be more meaningful were they to look at all NFL two deep rosters.

12/26/2012 - 12:43pm I dunno, good question I

I dunno, good question I suppose.  Appling is damn good.  Dawson is talented but a little gimpy after his injury last year.  He is getting stronger.  Nix and Payne are definitely talented big men, but also look lost at some points (as most big men under Izzo do).  Harris is as talented as he was billed.  I mean, they have pieces, it is just a matter of putting it together.  Izzo tends to make it work once February/March roll around.

I agree on Minnesota, I do like their team. I actually think that Iowa may come up and not Illinois down another peg.  I am not sold on that Illini team.

12/26/2012 - 9:54am I'll take a stab at it:

I'll take a stab at it:

1. Michigan - Obviously

2. Indiana - Really a 1a, I will be shocked to see them lose at Assembly Hall this year.

3. Michigan St. - Too much talent and coaching to continue to look mediocre all year.

4. Ohio St. - Same as I'm sure everyone else feels - how do they score if Thomas is taken away?

5. Minnesota - Scary talent that could move up the list if they put it together.  Coaching is obviously good here, too.

6. Illinois - Can they continue to be as explosive as they have?  Unlikely.

7. Iowa - Talented young team.  Will scare people.

8. Wisconsin - Go away Bo Ryan.

9. Northwestern - Crawford injury really hurts this team.

This is where the teams are just plain awful:

10. Nebraska

11. Purdue

12. Penn State

12/20/2012 - 2:15pm As a former D-2 football player

I can attest to how true this is. D-2 players aren't as exposed to steroids as D-1. I personally know guys who played at 4 different Big Ten schools that were using steroids. I am from Michigan and graduated from hs in 2004 if that helps narrow down 2 of those schools for you...

12/03/2012 - 1:21pm "People treat a playoff as if

"People treat a playoff as if it's more definitive than a regular season game, but why is that so?  The winner of a tournament is nothing more or less than the winner of  a tournament - it's not necessarily the best team. "

I'm going to argue against your straw man and say that the idea of a playoff isn't to decide the "best" team.  It is an opportunity to give the best teams an opportunity to prove it on the field.  Human voters and computers probably can get much closer to getting the top 6-8 teams correct than they can the top two.  At least there is a little bit more wiggle room since the 7th best or 9th best teams have a much weaker argument that they deserve a chance.

11/14/2012 - 12:21am This was my thought exactly.

This was my thought exactly. GR3 is Bernard Robinson but more athletic and with a much better jump shot. While that reads like a Fred Jackson-ism, it may be quite accurate... lets hope this keeps up!

11/11/2012 - 12:15pm Yesterday was the worst of

Yesterday was the worst of all.  That TD was pretty clear.  Either the replay officials are totally incompetent or are on the take.  Neither one is a desirable scenario.

Also, the safety was pretty questionable.  The ref sat there for 20 seconds pondering the ramifications of the call.  On the replay it was apparent that McGloin was outside of the tackle box when he threw the ball (despite what Spielman was trying to convince the audience of).

Dammit, Jim, you're drunk again!

Alas, I also hate everyone... everyone named Gary F'ing Bettman!

Who is this McCarthy you speak of?  Are there Communists that need to be removed from the B1G?!?

Mine:  Burke, Tim, GRIII, McGary and Horford

Major Minutes off the bench: Morgan, Vogrich, Stauskus and Levert

McLimans and Albrecht will get a few minutes each half.

Knowing what we know now, that defense performed that well DESPITE Gerg's presence, not because of it.

Great analogy.  Hopefully it will ring even more true with a World Series victory in the D (and starting a semi-dynasty in Detroit for 15-ish years to come?)

To be fair, it is the Browns...

45-13 - Go Blue

10/02/2012 - 4:25pm Yes, this stuff happens all

Yes, this stuff happens all the time.  No, it should not be completely overlooked.  No, we don't need to spend any more time talking about it.  Both coaches look like whiny little girls.

10/02/2012 - 1:18pm I played a lot of football

I played a lot of football (high school and college).  I had plenty of stingers.  You don't do that with a stinger.

Also, you don't just lay on the ground "scared and frozen" either, especially if you are an "All-American".

I know you are trying to play devil's advocate, I'm just saying those two theories don't pass the logic test.

I was knocked unconcious momentarily in a scrimmage before my senior year of high school (wow, almost 10 years now?! yikes!).  My helmet was off and I was not allowed back on the field the rest of the day.  That is what responsible adults do.

Marky D is just like most of college football - he is a power hungry man who will do whatever it takes to win.  He does not truly care about these kids, they are just a tool to elevate his status and make more money.  This is why I like Hoke so much, he truly cares about his players on AND MORE IMPORTANTLY off the field.

10/02/2012 - 9:50am Devil's Advocate

I'm not trying to disagree, I generally like Leyland (even for as stubborn as he is playing some players *cough*Rayburn*cough*).  But, wouldn't you agree that Leyland has been blessed with some tremendously talented teams compared to those of any of the slew of managers since Sparky retired?

Just like any sport, the coach/manager can only do so much with the talent he has.  The good ones know how to put their players in a position to succeed, after that it is up to the player to do the hard part.  Jim has been a good manager, but he also has been fortunate to have Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, Placido Polanco, Curtis Granderson, Kenny Rogers, Justin Verlander, Prince Fielder, etc, etc, etc.

09/28/2012 - 11:16am Except Jim Harbaugh doesn't

Except Jim Harbaugh doesn't coach for Stanford anymore... was he at the game or something and I didn't know about that?

Nope, I think you are in lock-step with all of us.  That is the first thing that I thought.  It all starts to make sense why the man is so successful when reading these types of things, though.

09/06/2012 - 6:49pm Meh, my inner Fred

Meh, my inner Fred Jackson would say he is more like Jim Brown but more dominant...

08/29/2012 - 11:06am Well, since I watched the

Well, since I watched the 2000 Orange Bowl last night, I think that my answer has to be to surprise Alabama's defense and have Tom Brady throw to David Terrell all night long.  It worked then, I can't see why it wouldn't know!

08/24/2012 - 1:27pm I will be celebrating my

I will be celebrating my mother's 50th birthday at a party with her a lot of my family next Saturday.  Should be a fun party, but I am not going to have my full attention on my mother from about 8:00 onward!

I tried the DRIPA this summer from Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. in Warren.  Highly recommended!

Best summer memory - I got engaged to my fiance out in Yellowstone a few weeks ago.  That place is wonderful and was a great setting for a fantastic week.

If I can see one play this year, I want to witness Lewan piledrive Tom Gholston as Denard slices through the MSU defense for a long TD... yess [Mr. Burns style finger  tapping].

08/17/2012 - 3:03pm At least it is past noon and

At least it is past noon and Friday [shrugs].

08/15/2012 - 8:10pm This should actually be a

This should actually be a mandatory sign at all televised events, especially Washington State games!

08/01/2012 - 10:12am I was a two time All-State

I was a two time All-State honorable mention safety in High School, two year starter on a D-2 team and had Al Horford throw down an Ally-Oop right over top of me in a high school basketball game.

08/01/2012 - 10:06am Whoa, wait a second.

Are you trying to tell me that my knowledge of a Cover 2 defense and evaluations of high school athletes that may or may not attend Michigan has NO bearing on my 401k nor my financial future?!?!

07/26/2012 - 11:06am That type of conversation

That type of conversation will typically happen at the end of a season and at the end of spring 'ball with either the offensive/defensive coordinator, your position coach, or both.

I sort of doubt (read: hope) that that conversation did not happen just now, unless there was some sort of situation that set it off (really don't want to speculate on that).

07/15/2012 - 2:05pm I'm excited to see where they

I'm excited to see where they go with the final season.  I have a feeling that Walter is going to meet an interesting demise by the end of the series, but how he gets to that point and who else doesn't make it is anyone's guess.

07/13/2012 - 4:03pm Wait, Dantonio put a guy's

Wait, Dantonio put a guy's body through a woodchipper!?!?  But he is a man of DISCIPLINE!!!

06/27/2012 - 3:42pm Don't get your hopes up.  I

Don't get your hopes up.  I would love for Harris to end up in AA, but the tea leaves are none too good.  He is most likely bound for East Lansing... may god have mercy on his soul!

06/20/2012 - 12:48pm This.  Just try to imagine

This.  Just try to imagine Brian Kelly's approach working with Ray Lewis.  It would only backfire and you would have a mutiny.

06/19/2012 - 10:46am As far as baseball players

As far as baseball players go, this sort of makes sense.  They tend to not have the huge endorsement deals that football players do in the states (or futbol in other parts of the world).

I am shocked that Verlander isn't higher up the list.  It seems like he has been everywhere since winning the Cy Young/MVP last year.

06/19/2012 - 10:42am Ugh...

I'll be that guy as this is one of my pet peeves.  Please read through this and try again.

06/12/2012 - 3:01pm That picture of the Stony

That picture of the Stony Brook players is going to get memed in an unpleasant way.

This is the first thing that popped into my mind.  Well played sir.

06/04/2012 - 5:33pm I liked the bowl system

I liked the bowl system myself.  However, I don't ever get the idea that people who play Division III, II or FCS don't like a playoff system as they have it.  In fact, most of them (the ones I know who have played in those systems) prefer that!  Mostly because, you know, they are competitive athletes who like the challenge.

05/17/2012 - 1:39pm Taylor is from my hometown.

Taylor is from my hometown.  Kid is a tireless worker and an extremely technical wrestler.  He will be a great Wolverine.

Hunwick... but it is tough to knock these other guys too far down.  Hagelin is a close second I suppose.  This is going to be much more difficult than I initially thought...

That horse down there... kick it one more time.  You know, just to be sure.

05/08/2012 - 11:19am This would be a more

This would be a more interesting diary with data over the entire NCAA rather than just UM.  You could find out which position group was more likely to live up to their recruiting ranking, etc.  If the Mathlete hasn't yet done this, I say we commision him to do so...

05/08/2012 - 11:16am Interesting and good.  I am

Interesting and good.  I am glad that the NCAA is at least taking some steps toward keeping the student-athlete idea a reality.

As far as the Dorsey situation, I don't think that was just a Michigan deal.  I believe there was some NCAA issues as well in regards to his weird high school/tutor class situation.  I could be wrong.

05/03/2012 - 12:05pm Haha... put this into

Haha... put this into perspective.  It is MAY!! and we are talking about closing strong about this recruiting class... just wow

05/01/2012 - 12:03pm The conspiracy theorist in me

The conspiracy theorist in me really believes that the powers that be will allow a playoff to happen, just a controlled, not very palatable one.  Then, when everyone "sees how awful" this playoff thing really is, they can simply go back to the bowl system and start raking the cash back in.

PLEASE give me home semi-finals.  I cannot imagine how great the atmosphere would be at one of those events!

No problem, I figured that there was a large enough portion of the viewership on this board that would enjoy the mental stimulation from this material.  Now if only I had the time to take all of the classes on here that seem interesting... I miss college...
