New Rivals 250 update
Rivals released its updated top 250 this morning. Michigan has the most of any school with 13 of its 18 commits in the top 250.
Michigan highlights:
Butt- 118 (down from 96)
Lewis- 147 (up from 167)
Dawson- 171 (up from 199)
Charlton- 175 (up from 183)
Shallman- 182 (down from 160)
LTT- 235 (down from 109)
Gedeon- 237 (down from 224)
Other notables:
Scott Pagano- 104 (up from unranked)
Jordan Wilkins- 128 (up from 209)
Devon Allen- 129 (down from 110)
Cole Luke- 202 (up from unranked)
Paul Harris- 214 (up from unranked)
Tashawn Bower- unranked (down from 250)
Themes:
1. If you didn't go to camp, you got a slight decrease to make room for new evaluated players or risers from camps (20 new players in the Rivals 250).
2. If you performed well at camp, you got a slight bump (Dawson, Lewis, Charlton). If you had a bad camp, you took a nosedive (LTT).
LTT will be just fine when he gets to AA...I personally like espn over all the sites for football with scouts in a close 2nd.. Rivals loves SEC commits..Some kind of weird southern love.. 24/7 is still to new for me..
SEC commits are totally overrated. It's not like they have 6 straight national championships or anything like that to justify their perennially lofty recruiting rankings.
Or it's not like SEC schools can recruit 5 recruits for every 4 recruits that Big Ten and Pac-12 schools can recruit...
Oh wait....who were the 2 teams in the national championship this year? I'm sure there's no correlation...
Because of course prior accomplishments assure future success. I mean, just look at Notre Dame and their storied history that has clearly only been added-to with their recent run of top-10 finishes.
You must be a billy with southern love.. Real good nat. title game by the way..Bama is in a league of their own. The rest of the SEC is just as good as any other conferences Good Teams..Hence LSU scoring 0 with under 100 yrs...
4 teams have been really good. Not the entire SEC, just 4 teams
Actually mathlete showed that ESPN has the strongest southern bias.
didn't LTT have a bad shoulder when he was in that last camp? That's a big drop.
Someone at Rivals didn't approve of LTT's mail burning.
dominates at multiple camps, demolishing 4 and 5 star players with ease, gets an invite to the Rivals Five Star challenge, and moves up 28 spots. Talk about inconsistency.
Logan Tuley-Tillman had more than one bad camp, and I don't think the shoulder was an excuse for the entire offseason.
In a way, I'm glad LTT dropped so far... hopefully it will provide him more motivation to work hard and fulfill his potential. The potential is there, as evidenced by his offer list. And at this point, regardless of how legitimate the excuses are, he's got a lot of work to do to get his momentum headed back toward his ceiling.
LTT needs to rehab his shoulder, learn to use his feet, do a better job with leverage, be more agressive at the point of attack, lose a ton of weight, eat better, and develop a slightly more nasty streak if he is to live up to his dream of emulating Jake Long. Does he have the physical tools and a great attitude, yes! Does he burn OSU letters to show his loyalty to us, yes! Is he vocal and a team player, yes! But he has a long, long way to go and a definite red shirt.
Let's pretend for a second that camps are useful.
Dawson was pretty highly rated after the season. He showed up to camps, did his thing, and moved up to #171 overall. It might not be "elite" but that's still a pretty good ranking.
Tuley-Tillman was pretty highly rated after the season. He showed up to camps, lacked technique, and reportedly looked out of shape. The reason for the last flaw is supposedly a bum shoulder.
I'm sorry, but you don't HAVE to get out of shape when you have a bum shoulder. You can still run, do lower body work, etc. Perhaps it was a significant concern to the Rivals evaluators that Tuley-Tillman let himself get out of shape. Sure, he can work himself back into shape...but he still might not be one of the top 234 players in the country. There are lots of kids out there who didn't get out of shape, have solid technique, etc.
is the Senator not ranked??
Morris is #22, OP just didnt put him on his list....
stupid job, life, kids, got in the way from my checking of recruiting news! thanks,
Always let mgoblog get in the way of work, not the other way around.
I can't believe Gareon Conley was still left out of the 250. Every other site has him rated much higher, Rivals has him completely underrated.
Yep, for example: Rivals isn't backing off their lofty ranking of EJ Levenberry, unlike a lot of the other sites that have dropped him quite a bit.
Not that Rivals is unable to make mistakes, but they have shown to be the most accurate when it comes to rating prospects. So...maybe the other sites are wrong.
How did dawson not rise more? The guy has been going beast mode in the camps.
Especially since Rivals just did a front page article on his prep for the 5 Star Challenge. As I recall, they also spoke of his prior camp success.
Camps are overrated, especially for linemen.
But the only thing that has changed since the last rerankings were people's performances at camps, which he has been doing really well at.
...and he went up in the rankings based on those camps. If camps are overrated and he only got a slight bump based on those camps, then perhaps that's because the evaluators aren't convinced that his camp performance is duplicated on the field. Your comment isn't really a counterpoint.
It's funny how we think so many of our recruits are underrated. Under what objective basis can we conclude whether it's sourceA that underrating the player or sourceB that is overrating the player?
while yes, maize colored glasses and all, a lot of our commits have been taking home Camp MVP, position MVP, or lighting up each camp they go too and yet the rankings come out and you see a slight bump or a 20 spot drop. With that info available to the sites you would think they could come to more of a consensus.
I still believe that each site gives a friendly raise in the rankings based on if your commited or not hence our class starting off super high and slowly coming back down.
But like who, really? Dawson was the OL MVP at the Columbus camp. What other D1 lineman was there? LTT, but that's refelcted by Dawson being rated higher than LTT. What guys in our class have been out-shining other higher ranked recruits at their position? I'm just saying, if an M commit goes to a camp with all players ranked lower than him, and he ends up being the best player at that camp, that doesn't mean he needs to go up in the rankings.
If Dawson went to a camp with a handful of top-50 linemen and made them all look like middle schoolers, you'd have a case. But that hasn't happened. And being in the top 250 is still a really big deal - most of the guys on that list would dominate their position group at a regional camp where most of the regional talent didn't come.
Dawson will get his jump when he does well at The Opening against some better competition.
If you commit to the ESPN AA Game over the Army AA Game...you go up.
ESPN LOVES to talk about it's top prospects....
Beyond you? Jake Butt is one of the top TEs in the country to all of the services, he's legit. Heuerman is also good, but to say that it's "beyond you" how Butt could possibly be ranked higher is either naive or straight homer. As an ND fan, I'm sure it's some magical combination of the two.
Just because you say two nice things about our recruits doesn't make your last statement any less ridiculous. These are the comments that make other fanbases dislike ND fans.
