A few interesting recruiting notes (3-26-12 edition)

Submitted by RollDamnTide on

A couple people have messaged me privately about who the two Michigan commits are going to be. With the 2nd commit, I can only guess at this point, until I get a chance to talk to my guys and kick the tires. As for the 1st, I'm not a recruiting expert, but since I'm privy to some inside info, I take it seriously. I'm pretty certain I know who that recruit is, and I won't say his name, because I want to give the kid his spotlight. Having said that however, one can easily discern who that recruit is, by reading my previous posts. I've been pretty adamant about this young man going to Michigan for quite some time. I'm pretty certain the board will be very hard to access for a solid hour and a half after he commits.

The second recruit is unknown to me right now, but I am hearing that if his Dad  likes what he sees, he will allow E.J to pull the trigger. Will that Happen? Hey, your guess is as good as mine. What's is the weather like in AA that weekend? From the people that know something about it, they say that Michigan is definitely EJ's top school at the moment. His Dad does like Florida State, but I don't think it's as much as Mike Farrell says he does. He wants to wait until signing day to decide, that's certain. Having said that, I will say this. For Michigan to turn down Dorian O'Daniel, they had to know something about E.J, and be REALLY confident. Ben Gedeon is a solid prospect, but he's not the kind of prospect that you turn O'Daniel for, Levenberry is. What people haven't mentioned, is that Levenberry and O'Daniel are projected to play the same LB spot at the next level. Gedeon is a bigger kid, and not likely to be used the same as O'Daniel and Levenberry. Do the math.

I wasn't expecting to post an update this early, so I'll include some national and SEC recruit updates in my next post. Thanks for reading, guys.

Neg me for this if I missed a thread, but where can I read info on RDT to get me to where the rest of you are where you actually believe he's been getting legit inside UM recruiting info?  Ace, Sam, TVH, Brian, Aqua, I'm there with, but I feel like I'm missing a legitimacy datapoint on RDT you all seem to already possess.

I appreciate his write-ups, but I take the information with a grain of salt because I don't really know his sources like the others you mentioned.

Majority of us are recruiting addicts and even some of us who hate it still participate in discussion.  I think people just appreciate new any which way we can get it as long as it is not coming from Ace Williams.

You must, because you pretty much described me and my feelings (on the subject 0f this thread) perfectly.

All-in-all, I find RDT's take interesting, so no reason to attack him as a messenger.  OTOH, I think it's good to see things from an outsider's perspective, and time will tell whether he's on the mark.

I've pretty much assumed all along that "Roll Damn Tide" is a Michigan fan.  It seems rather implausible that a guy who supposedly came here to find out more about the Michigan team has, in the span of a few weeks, morphed into an insider giving us privileged info.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he's the same guy who used to post recruiting updates under the handle "gobluegr."  Consider:

...but if Isaac does sign here, with the O-line we're going to have, does anybody know of anywhere I could put money down on 2015 Heisman Trophy futures?

@Chi-Blue, I think you're jumping ahead of yourself.  With our reversion to a pro-style offense, running the ball 35+ times a game, there will be plenty of carries to go around.  Secondly, these kids can't be worried about competition.  Injuries happen.  Stars don't guarantee you will succeed.  You have to earn it.  5 star guys don't always pan out (Grady, Fargus, Walter Cross).  Underrated, undersized guys emerge to set records (Mike Hart).  You never know until you go out there, strap on the pads and hit someone.

And if Ty does commit soon, this will just be Michigan getting back to its historical roots.  Remember backfields of yore: T. Wheatley, Ricky Powers and Jesse Johnson all splitting carries?

Not sure I agree completely. He went from consensus #1 player in his recruiting class to having a mediocre college career followed by a mediocre pro career. Definitely wouldn't call him a bust, but most of the opportunities he received were based on potential that never truly came to fruition.

There is a huge difference between "didn't quite live up to top national recruit hype" and "didn't pan out."  The dude was a 3rd round draft pick, played 7 years in the NFL, had a thousand yard rushing season and another where he ran for 850.

He had a mediocre college career because of injuries, position switches and a transfer.  He had as good of a pro career as almost any M running back ever has.

Point is, Grady's and Fargas' situations are not comparable.

I was very young, but yes I have seen some tape of those days. However, those were guys in a different system and under a different staff. Both Borges and Hoke have stated since they got here that they wnat one back to carry the mail, and one other to give some carries as well. In the system they want that means back 1 gets 25-30 carries and back 2 8-12 carries, or somewhere in that area. Smith is going to be 5'11 and 225, and a battering ram, and Isaac is the hit the hole and gone guy, and thats a pretty nice one two punch.

I agree that stars dont make a player, but do you think that Shallman looks like a better back than Isaac or Smith??

ehh we've already got 2 guys we can use in this class for rb's, i'd rather spend scholarships on positions we need more, like in the secondary or wideouts. if we get isaac, great, but i think deveon smith committing might make him consider elsewhere.

Same goes with Levenberry.

I don't think we'll take a 3rd LB unless it's Levenberry, and I doubt we take a 3rd RB unless it's Isaac.  I fully expect us to take both, if they want to commit.  My real question here is, if Levenberry commits before Gedeon, do we take Gedeon as our 3rd LB?  I would, though I'd love to here the opinions of others.  It's a nice problem to have.

EDIT: can the MODs please stop this nonsense?

It's pretty weak.  Almost every post I have made today has been labeled flaimbait, off topic, etc .. it's really annoying, and I have seen it done to others as well, who are just trying to have a civil conversation, add information that fits the thread in queston.  It's hard to read the content when so much is taken out via misguided and mislabeled "moderation" is all, so I thought I'd bring it up.  Anyway, that's all, back to the topic at hand, which I believe are recruiting notes.

Yeah, it's mostly due to your "Hey everyone, they said my twitter handle on the radio" post, and it got worse when you continued making posts complaining about it.

It's not hard to read content when people downvote you.  Just don't look at it.  I rarely look at how many points a post has, so it hasn't affected my ability to follow the convo.  You making 10 posts complaining about being in time out, has slowed me down a little.

I am gonna go with Isaac simply based on "I am pretty sure the board will be very hard to access..."  and as for the second, who cares if we get Isaac :)

Apparently Sam Webb says the coaches are planning for this class to be 24 recruits.  That means we have 8 spots left.  I hope we finish with Ty Isaac, Henry Poggi, EJ Levenberry, Ben Gedeon, LaQuon Treadwell, Darell Daniels, Greg Webb and Su'a Cravens.

That's the first I'd heard of Darrell Daniels, but all in all that group would be an incredible finish to the class.  That would have to be the #1 class in the country, would fill all of our needs, and would be packed with stars.

If that happens, I would predict that in the four years those guys were in AA, they'd lose no more than 4 games.

Daniels is just one of many high quality receivers we are in hot pursuit of.  You can check out interviews and updates about Daniels on Tremendous' site: http://thisismichiganfootball.blogspot.com/2012/03/darrell-daniels-update.html

A few of the other receivers we are looking at:  Eldridge Massington, Devon Allen, Marquez North, Sebastian LaRue, Marcell Ateman, Demorea Stringfellow and Uriah LeMay.  Of course our #1 target is Laquon Treadwell.  The only problem I see is that Treadwell is the only one from the Midwest so it may be challenging to get these guys to visit.

I'm no insider but Isaac just said he's not close to a decision. He has a few in front and they know who they are but he's going to chill on it until it feels right and it doesn't yet. Poggi seems 50/50 on Mich/Bama And Levenberry doesn't seem close to a decision per his or his fathers words. But hopefully their own words are irrelevant.

I am sure he'll be off his USC high here soon.

I think Poggi and Levenberry are more than 50/50 Michigan, and their respected other suitors - FSU and Alabama.  I don't know to what standard FSU and Alabama hold each of these guys, but Michigan seems to have them atop of their lists.  The spring game, the visits that come with it, could easily become the most important recruiting days of 2013.  Logan Tuley-Tilman, who was just offered by USC, at one time said he was going to ride this thing out.  He's been BLUE for a few weeks now, things change.  Lets hope things go our way.

As I posted in the other thread

LTT was offered because Ty Isaac was here in Cali this weekend at USC and enjoyed his visit alot from what I hear. Also LTT and Ty are friends and this is one more way to try to make Isaac feel comfortable if he committed to them. Kiffen is dirty but he is not stupid, the other lineman I hear was
