Buckeye-geddon: 1-year bowl ban, 9 schollies, extra probation, JT Show Cause

Submitted by BiSB on

One thread to rule them all;

One thread to find them (guilty of Major Violations);

One thread to bring them all (additional scholarship reductions);

And in Columbus bind them (during bowl season).

EDIT: Check, check, check, and check.  Ohio will not be eligible for post-season play next year, which includes the B1G Championship game. The NCAA added 4 scholarship cuts to Ohio's self-imposed 5, and added a year of probation. Tressel also hit with a Show-Cause.

EDIT II: There is some confusion about the lost scholarships. My understanding is that 9 scholarships over 3 years means that they have to AVERAGE a maximum of 82 scholarships per year over the next three years, as opposed to the typical maximum of 85 per year.

I just know USC's punishment meant they could only sign 15 AND had to stay under 75 total, so I just assume that OSU's will be similarly structured.  If all they have to do is stay under 82 then the punishment is basically non-existent as you could just peace out a few non-productive upperclassmen every year and still comply.

They can't play in a bowl game in the kid's freshman year and they got dinged another 1.3333333333 scholarships per year for three years over what they had already self-imposed.  That is about as minor as the extra punishment could get.

To turn that into "OMG, he's lying to this kid's face!" is a severe stretch.  It also isn't like the kid had signed an LOI and would now be fucked over.  I'm pretty sure Dunn could give two shits about these new penalties and is still going to OSU.

Call it however you want, but the ruling today does not coincide with what Dunn publicly said Meyer told him. Meyer acted like he knew what was going to happen (and told recruits this) but later retracted and said he had no assurances. How do you know what Dunn is thinking? Maybe he really is pissed off about being lied to but is now too worried about  how he would be treated in his home state if he opened his recruitment back up (LOI or not). I'm not saying this is definitely the case, but you don't know either.

The best part is reading the first few pages of that Buckeye Planet thread, from when the allegations first hit.  What a collectively dumb fanbase.

I've also enjoyed reading about " NCAA presidences" and OSU's "impotence".  Lol.

...we didn't yet know about DiGeronimo or Cornerstone or Talbott, and there wasn't yet an FTM. If you thought this was a fair punishment for Tressel and Tats it would mean it's a bit light for the current charges.

Wow.  This has to be one of the most highly read Board threads of all time.  Over 10,000 views!  Impressive.  People (including me) love to bask in OSU shortcomings.

Let me say this....I would bet all my vcash, my house, cars, bank accounts, first born and a night with my wife that JT in know[sic] way lied or mislead the investigation or delayed the telling someone if he really thought the source was creditable....The integrity and character he has shown it would shock me if there was anything to this as far as JT goes...

The NCAA would have taken a beating in the media if they accepted OSU's punishment.  Still wish they would have given them a 2 year bowl ban and 15 scholarship reduction.

Ohio still got off a little easy, but at least the wrist slap was with a studded belt.

I'm embarrassed, dismayed and angered by those comments suggesting that he may have done something to warrant his dismissal. Just flabbergasted by the implication, to be honest. Coach Tressel has provided ample evidence that his judgment is usually absolutely on target. Even if this is a case when his decision-making was not ideal, he's got enough "in the bank" so that Buckeye fans need to support him.

I can't believe the NCAA can get away with this. The Ohio State football players are doing nothing that every college footballer at every university is doing. Are you serious ?!! College players are receiving cash benefits at every university in the big 10 ! Someone needs to go after the NCAA and get them disbanded They must sleep with ESPN !!
THE PENALTIES LODGED BY OHIO STATE ON ITSELF WERE FOR THE TRANSCRETIONS DURING THE TRESSEL ERA. THE ADDED NCAA PENALTIES ARE FOR HIRING URBAN MEYER AND GETTING ALL THESE RECRUITS. REMEMBER THOSE THAT PENALIZE ARE OUR COMPETITION. ALSO THE TIMING IS DIABOLICAL. RIGHT BEFORE A RECRUITING DEAD PERIOD. NCAA - NO DUE PROCESS, NO EQUAL JUSTUCE - MAKE IT UP AS YOU GO ALONG!
I can't get over how anxious the Dispatch is to get this story out! It seems like they are really getting off on this. Aren't they supposed to at least be unbiased in their reporting of OSU athletics? The e-mail I saw announcing the bowl ban was time stamped 1:53PM. I thought the call was at 3PM. Very, very sad Dispatch. Go to ****.
It is time that the Governor and Attorney General step in. Ohio needs to sue the NCAA for antitrust violations. Arbitrary punishment is against the law. Worse, the people that committed the violations are gone and have not been hurt one bit. I am tired of the rule breakers getting away with their violations and the people of Ohio and the rest of the team paying the penalty. The NCAA is a terrible organization that is destroying college football. Take them to court. Now!

Some have said that a bowl ban won't affect the freshmen that much, but I say not so fast. Without a real goal next season (Big Ten Championship or a bowl), it's going to be hard for the seniors to rally, and the disappointment might poison the season for everyone. One can only hope.

Yes, but even without motivation, the division Ohio is in should be a cake walk.  I mean, who are the powers going to be Penn State? Illinois? Purdue? Indiana?  About the only team that could even rise to mediocre is Wisconsin, and they are losing a sgnificant portion of their scoring power.

re-tweeted a re-tweet of someone else's tweet (shit this is getting confusing) saying basically that witnesses feared for their safety so they didn't cooperate in investigation.

What all witnesses would this include? The "attorney" who emailed tressel didn't have to cooperate because there was a trail saying all we needed to know. What other witnesses could have helped bury them more but didn't because of "fearing for their own safety"?

above mentioned re-tweetedness...

This is correct. Witness refused 4 his own safety. RT There's a reason OSU allegations ended unproven. Witness feared 4 his life.

on the one hand its NOT nearly enough..I think we all know that there has been alot of corruption and Dirt down in Columbus...FOR A LONG TIME..not just the tats, the cars, the money, boosters providing cash,and the cover up...so it should have been ALOT WORSE...However

the Bowl Ban has them stunned and leaves a Black Mark on the Olieo St..they are REPEAT VIOLATORS and have wrecked their reputation..The Pres , the AD, and the fans who have ALL supported and defended this corruption are in shock..GOOD..they didnt get a wrist slap but they still got off to easy...

I will continue to remind them of the shame and humiliation they have brought unto themselves, their school, state and the B10 conference...I say when they are down an out? KICK THEM

thats how much I detest the Oliars

This symbolic bowl ban they are slapping Ohio with doesn't mean much in the larger scheme of things. This is a program that cheated for close to a decade and yet they get to skate with 9 scholarship reductions!?! Don't be fooled by the bowl ban. The NCAA has slapped Ohio on the wrist...
