Buckeye-geddon: 1-year bowl ban, 9 schollies, extra probation, JT Show Cause
One thread to rule them all;
One thread to find them (guilty of Major Violations);
One thread to bring them all (additional scholarship reductions);
And in Columbus bind them (during bowl season).
EDIT: Check, check, check, and check. Ohio will not be eligible for post-season play next year, which includes the B1G Championship game. The NCAA added 4 scholarship cuts to Ohio's self-imposed 5, and added a year of probation. Tressel also hit with a Show-Cause.
EDIT II: There is some confusion about the lost scholarships. My understanding is that 9 scholarships over 3 years means that they have to AVERAGE a maximum of 82 scholarships per year over the next three years, as opposed to the typical maximum of 85 per year.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:29 PM ^
I just know USC's punishment meant they could only sign 15 AND had to stay under 75 total, so I just assume that OSU's will be similarly structured. If all they have to do is stay under 82 then the punishment is basically non-existent as you could just peace out a few non-productive upperclassmen every year and still comply.
December 20th, 2011 at 4:05 PM ^
I'm not sure what you don't get. Meyer told Dunn (according to Dunn) that nothing worse was going to happen. That turned out to be a lie.
December 20th, 2011 at 5:39 PM ^
They can't play in a bowl game in the kid's freshman year and they got dinged another 1.3333333333 scholarships per year for three years over what they had already self-imposed. That is about as minor as the extra punishment could get.
To turn that into "OMG, he's lying to this kid's face!" is a severe stretch. It also isn't like the kid had signed an LOI and would now be fucked over. I'm pretty sure Dunn could give two shits about these new penalties and is still going to OSU.
December 20th, 2011 at 6:11 PM ^
Call it however you want, but the ruling today does not coincide with what Dunn publicly said Meyer told him. Meyer acted like he knew what was going to happen (and told recruits this) but later retracted and said he had no assurances. How do you know what Dunn is thinking? Maybe he really is pissed off about being lied to but is now too worried about how he would be treated in his home state if he opened his recruitment back up (LOI or not). I'm not saying this is definitely the case, but you don't know either.
December 20th, 2011 at 2:48 PM ^
my day just got that much better. America
December 20th, 2011 at 2:49 PM ^
Any body read the twitters and what recruits are sayinng, you all knnow who I am speaking of?
December 20th, 2011 at 2:49 PM ^
The best part is reading the first few pages of that Buckeye Planet thread, from when the allegations first hit. What a collectively dumb fanbase.
I've also enjoyed reading about " NCAA presidences" and OSU's "impotence". Lol.
December 20th, 2011 at 2:50 PM ^
This is a fair judgment, IMHO. It is approximately what I thought last spring.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:01 PM ^
...we didn't yet know about DiGeronimo or Cornerstone or Talbott, and there wasn't yet an FTM. If you thought this was a fair punishment for Tressel and Tats it would mean it's a bit light for the current charges.
December 20th, 2011 at 2:54 PM ^
And now rooting hard for a Gator Bowl loss so tOSU breaks both their winning season streak and their bowl streak.
December 20th, 2011 at 2:54 PM ^
My precious....
December 20th, 2011 at 2:57 PM ^
Wow. This has to be one of the most highly read Board threads of all time. Over 10,000 views! Impressive. People (including me) love to bask in OSU shortcomings.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:03 PM ^
10,000 views and ZERO responses to the text messages I sent to a few Ohio friends who have taunted me for the past few years.
Having grown up in Ohio and now living in VA with tons of Ohio friends, I guess this does make me smile.
December 20th, 2011 at 2:57 PM ^
Let me say this....I would bet all my vcash, my house, cars, bank accounts, first born and a night with my wife that JT in know[sic] way lied or mislead the investigation or delayed the telling someone if he really thought the source was creditable....The integrity and character he has shown it would shock me if there was anything to this as far as JT goes...
December 20th, 2011 at 3:02 PM ^
I'll take that bet. Wait...what does his wife look like?
December 20th, 2011 at 3:00 PM ^
Not enough. I was hoping for 15 scholies over 3 years, 2 year bowl ban.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:00 PM ^
The NCAA would have taken a beating in the media if they accepted OSU's punishment. Still wish they would have given them a 2 year bowl ban and 15 scholarship reduction.
Ohio still got off a little easy, but at least the wrist slap was with a studded belt.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:04 PM ^
More than a wrist slap, less than a whuppin'?
December 20th, 2011 at 3:04 PM ^
I'm embarrassed, dismayed and angered by those comments suggesting that he may have done something to warrant his dismissal. Just flabbergasted by the implication, to be honest. Coach Tressel has provided ample evidence that his judgment is usually absolutely on target. Even if this is a case when his decision-making was not ideal, he's got enough "in the bank" so that Buckeye fans need to support him.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:12 PM ^
Please tell me this isn't something that our good friend Gordon Gee said on the record . . .
December 20th, 2011 at 3:12 PM ^
Who is the quote from?
December 20th, 2011 at 3:14 PM ^
who is the genius who made such profound and prophetic statements?
December 20th, 2011 at 3:09 PM ^
I love how surprised they are down here in Columbus
December 20th, 2011 at 3:10 PM ^
As some ancillary consolation, I've been unable to access 11w to see their take, which probably implies a mini-meltdown over there.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:13 PM ^
I can't believe the NCAA can get away with this. The Ohio State football players are doing nothing that every college footballer at every university is doing. Are you serious ?!! College players are receiving cash benefits at every university in the big 10 ! Someone needs to go after the NCAA and get them disbanded They must sleep with ESPN !!
THE PENALTIES LODGED BY OHIO STATE ON ITSELF WERE FOR THE TRANSCRETIONS DURING THE TRESSEL ERA. THE ADDED NCAA PENALTIES ARE FOR HIRING URBAN MEYER AND GETTING ALL THESE RECRUITS. REMEMBER THOSE THAT PENALIZE ARE OUR COMPETITION. ALSO THE TIMING IS DIABOLICAL. RIGHT BEFORE A RECRUITING DEAD PERIOD. NCAA - NO DUE PROCESS, NO EQUAL JUSTUCE - MAKE IT UP AS YOU GO ALONG!
I can't get over how anxious the Dispatch is to get this story out! It seems like they are really getting off on this. Aren't they supposed to at least be unbiased in their reporting of OSU athletics? The e-mail I saw announcing the bowl ban was time stamped 1:53PM. I thought the call was at 3PM. Very, very sad Dispatch. Go to ****.
It is time that the Governor and Attorney General step in. Ohio needs to sue the NCAA for antitrust violations. Arbitrary punishment is against the law. Worse, the people that committed the violations are gone and have not been hurt one bit. I am tired of the rule breakers getting away with their violations and the people of Ohio and the rest of the team paying the penalty. The NCAA is a terrible organization that is destroying college football. Take them to court. Now!
December 20th, 2011 at 3:23 PM ^
Sweet sweet tears.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:25 PM ^
I'm going to go get a spoon and then read your post again....
December 20th, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
TRANSCRETIONS
That looks pretty serious. I would google that word but I'm at work.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:39 PM ^
No piece!
I actually liked the one accusing the Dispatch of being out to get Ohio...yeah, they had such bias against the Buckeyes they ran a "how many days since..." clock for years. Interesting definitions of journalistic integrity down there.
December 20th, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
...I agree with the last poster and I intend to call the AG's office and start agitating. Sue the NCAA! And while you're at it, how about a libel action against SI? Let there be light! And discovery!
December 20th, 2011 at 3:15 PM ^
December 20th, 2011 at 3:17 PM ^
Penalty seems to be within reason. But, really, losing 9 scholarships over three seasons isn't very significant.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:31 PM ^
Commence chewing, MGoPoppers. They got off about as light as was conceivable, but it's gonna be a nice couple of weeks anyway.
December 20th, 2011 at 3:37 PM ^
OMG I can't look away.
December 20th, 2011 at 4:04 PM ^
I am having a bad day at work and this is by far the most excellent thing for me to read even on a good day.
December 20th, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
Ohio is pretending to be "shocked" by those lame sanctions so they won't get hit really hard
December 20th, 2011 at 4:29 PM ^
NCAA > Ohio.
Also, Tebow is in there somewhere too.
December 20th, 2011 at 4:46 PM ^
Some have said that a bowl ban won't affect the freshmen that much, but I say not so fast. Without a real goal next season (Big Ten Championship or a bowl), it's going to be hard for the seniors to rally, and the disappointment might poison the season for everyone. One can only hope.
December 20th, 2011 at 5:38 PM ^
Yes, but even without motivation, the division Ohio is in should be a cake walk. I mean, who are the powers going to be Penn State? Illinois? Purdue? Indiana? About the only team that could even rise to mediocre is Wisconsin, and they are losing a sgnificant portion of their scoring power.
December 20th, 2011 at 7:03 PM ^
while true a one year bowl ban won't affect the freshmen a ton, losing those additional bowl practices is a hit. Most people think those bowl practices are a good way to get a lot of work in with the younger players.
December 20th, 2011 at 4:54 PM ^
I hope they go 11-1 next year, too.

re-tweeted a re-tweet of someone else's tweet (shit this is getting confusing) saying basically that witnesses feared for their safety so they didn't cooperate in investigation.
What all witnesses would this include? The "attorney" who emailed tressel didn't have to cooperate because there was a trail saying all we needed to know. What other witnesses could have helped bury them more but didn't because of "fearing for their own safety"?
above mentioned re-tweetedness...

...the primary source for the Rife allegations in George Dohrmann's SI story. Among other things he was the source for the "I get whatever I want" quote from Pryor.
December 20th, 2011 at 5:30 PM ^
on the one hand its NOT nearly enough..I think we all know that there has been alot of corruption and Dirt down in Columbus...FOR A LONG TIME..not just the tats, the cars, the money, boosters providing cash, and the cover up...so it should have been ALOT WORSE...However
the Bowl Ban has them stunned and leaves a Black Mark on the Olieo St..they are REPEAT VIOLATORS and have wrecked their reputation..The Pres , the AD, and the fans who have ALL supported and defended this corruption are in shock..GOOD..they didnt get a wrist slap but they still got off to easy...
I will continue to remind them of the shame and humiliation they have brought unto themselves, their school, state and the B10 conference...I say when they are down an out? KICK THEM
thats how much I detest the Oliars
December 20th, 2011 at 7:25 PM ^
This symbolic bowl ban they are slapping Ohio with doesn't mean much in the larger scheme of things. This is a program that cheated for close to a decade and yet they get to skate with 9 scholarship reductions!?! Don't be fooled by the bowl ban. The NCAA has slapped Ohio on the wrist...
December 20th, 2011 at 8:54 PM ^
I love reading about how Michigan is their bowl game now. I hope Hoke goes to that shithole and puts up 70+.
